Review The Autobiographical Narrative in Modern Japan: A Study of Kasai Zenzo, a Shi-shosetsu Writer / Edwin Mellen Press:

This study offers both a chronological description of the literary career of Kasai Zenzo (1887-1928) and an historical examination of shi-shosetsu (a Japanese autobiographical/confessional literary genre) during and after his lifetime. This work should appeal to scholars interested in Japanese literature and the genre of autobiography. Zenzo was one of the most important shi-shosetsu authors, living in the Taisho Period (1912-1926) in which this genre was in the height of its ascendancy. In shi-shosetsu, the "I" novel, the author recounts details of his or her personal life with only a thin veneer of fiction. This genre was believed to be an ideal form of prose writing and an expression of individual depth, created without the fabrications normally found in conventional fiction, making it one of the most striking features of modern Japanese literature. Kasai, living his entire life in poverty, turned to Zen Buddhism for spiritual solace and became both a major architect of the Taisho shi-shosetsu and its defining author.

Review Missionary Practices on the Gold Coast, 1832-1895: Discourse, Gaze and Gender in the Basel Mission in Pre-Colonial West Africa / Cambria Press:

This is a valuable scholarly analysis of the ways that the practices of three members of the Basel Mission (Evangelische Missionsgesellschaft Basel)-Andreas Riis (1804-1854), Rosine Widmann (1828-1909), and Carl Christian Reindorf (1834-1917)-informed the nineteenth-century mission field of the Gold Coast between the years 1832-1895. This study is based upon the original handwritten documents of these three missionaries, which are housed in the Basel Mission Archive in Basel, Switzerland. The book is located within the larger discipline of postcolonial studies, and more particularly within the framework of Tzvetan Todorov's discussion of 'signs' in his 1984 work The Conquest of America. The study also is set against the backdrop of the important theories on missions in the writings of Schleiermacher, Fabri, and Warneck. A significant contribution made by this study is that it contains the first discussion of the female German missionary Rosine Widmann, who serves as a kind of example of the then current Missionsfrauen. This book leads to a better understanding of the Gold Coast, and makes important contributions to scholarship in the fields of mission studies, German historical theology, German studies, and African studies.

Review Race Riots and Resistance: The Red Summer of 1919 (African American Literature and Culture: Expanding and Exploding the Boundaries) / Peter Lang Publishing:

Race Riots and Resistance uncovers a long-hidden, tragic chapter of American history. Focusing on the Red Summer of 1919 in which black communities were targeted by white mobs, the book examines the contexts out of which white racial violence arose. It shows how the riots transcended any particularity of cause, and in doing so calls into question many longstanding beliefs about racial violence. The book goes on to portray the riots as a phenomenon, documenting the number of incidents, describing the events in detail, and analyzing the patterns that emerge from looking at the riots collectively. Finally and significantly, Race Riots and Resistance argues that the response to the riots marked an early stage of what came to be known as the Civil Rights Movement.

Review On the Erudition of the Historical St. Patrick (Celtic Studies, 2) / Edwin Mellen Press:

This monograph supports and advances the views of Celtic scholar David R. Howlett. Topics such as the compositional level of the historical St Patrick, the five collections of the sayings of Jesus in the Gospel of St Matthew, on which the thematic structure of his "Confession" is based, are discussed. This work demonstrates that the historical St Patrick might well be considered not only as a first-rate Biblical theologian, but as a wise, monastic, spiritual director versed in moral and pastoral theory.

Review Paul Henry / Yale University Press:

In his idyllic landscape paintings of the west of Ireland, Paul Henry (1876-1958) provides the quintessential view of the Irish scene, now as universally familiar as Cezanne's view of Provence or Constable's recording of Suffolk. Henry stands alone as the most influential landscapist to work in Ireland in the twentieth century. In this generously illustrated biography, S. B. Kennedy tells the story of Henry's life and artistic achievements, interweaves the life of his highly talented wife Grace, and explores his friendships and associations in the artistic worlds of Paris, London, Dublin, and Belfast. Kennedy offers a full account of Henry's entire career, including his early experience studying under Whistler in fin-de-siecle Paris, his subsequent work as an illustrator in London, and his transforming trip to Achill Island in his native Ireland in 1910. Transfixed by the landscape, the people of the island, and their way of life, Henry thereafter devoted his career to painting Irish life and landscape, introducing a degree of realism that was new to Irish painting. Kennedy also discusses the career of Henry's first wife, Grace (1868-1953), a painter in her own right who here emerges from behind the shadow of her husband as a more substantial figure than has been previously recognized. In addition, the author sets Henry's work in historical context and considers the reasons for renewed interest in Henry's landscape paintings in recent years.
