Review John Goodwin and the Puritan Revolution: Religion and Intellectual Change in Seventeenth-Century England (Studies in Modern British Religious History) / Boydell Press:

John Goodwin (1594-1665) was one of the most prolific and controversial writers of the English Revolution; his career illustrates some of the most important intellectual developments of the seventeenth century. Educated at Queens' College, Cambridge, he became vicar of a flagship Puritan parish in the City of London. During the 1640s, he wrote in defence of the civil war, the army revolt, Pride's Purge, and the regicide, only to turn against Cromwell in 1657. Finally, repudiating religious uniformity, he became one of England's leading tolerationists. This richly contextualised study, the first modern intellectual biography of Goodwin, explores the whole range of writings produced by him and his critics. Amongst much else, it shows that far from being a maverick individualist, Goodwin enjoyed a wide readership, pastored one of the London's largest Independent congregations and was well connected to various networks. Hated and admired by Anglicans, Presbyterians and Levellers, he provides us with a new perspective on contemporaries like Richard Baxter and John Milton. It will be of special interest to students of Puritanism, the English Revolution, and early modern intellectual history. JOHN COFFEY is Reader in Early Modern History at the University of Leicester.

Review Women's Life Writing in Early Modern Scotland: Writing the Evangelical Self, C. 1670-C. 1730 (Early Modern Englishwoman, 1500-1750. Contemporary Editions) / Ashgate Publishing:

This edition presents writings by early modern Scottish women about women - namely, themselves. From about 1660, Scottish women began to express themselves, sometimes extensively, in religious prose. Here David Mullan showcases selections of these women's writings from c. 1670 until c. 1725, by which time the remarkable self-writing impetus provided by the later covenanting experience began to abate. Much of the material is in the form of journals, some narrowly focused on the inner self, some rather more aware of the external world, some from aristocratic women and some from women in lower social stations. There are also a couple of autobiographies, and within several of the documents will be found women's personal covenants with God. Mullan includes an introductory essay, as well as and glossaries to define the evangelical usage of important terms and Scotticisms, introductory comments for each individual document, and annotations to identify obscure words, individuals named in the texts, biblical references, and other points of interest.

Review Blackwell Publishers / Queen Emma and Queen Edith: Queenship and Women's Power in Eleventh-Century England Publication date: 1997-07
Dewey code: 942.0190922
Price: $44.95

Review Queen Emma and Queen Edith: Queenship and Women's Power in Eleventh-Century England / Blackwell Publishers:

This is the first full-scale biography of two early English queens: Emma, queen first to Aethelread and then to Cnut, and Edith, queen to Edward the Confessor. Through detailed study of these women the author demonstrates the integral place of royal queens in the rule of the English kingdom and in the process of unification by which England was made. The careers of Emma and Edith span the troubled decades of eleventh-century English history, and the book reassesses their role in the story of foreign conquests, succession dispute and political murder. Their biography is illuminated by a detailed study of the structures of tenth- and eleventh-century English Queenship - motherhood, marriage, inheritance and succession, the royal household and patronage, consecrated and holy Queenship. It moves from the partial stories told of them by others, and the unique narrative worlds they themselves commissioned, to a new and detailed biography in which Emma especially emerges as one of the most significant political actors of her day and in which both women are shown as both imprisoned by but contesting the inexorable female lifecycle. The book is an important contribution to our understanding of eleventh- and twelfth-century rule but also of medieval England in general, and, crucially, the role of women within that world.

Review Aleister Crowley: The Nature of the Beast / Borgo Press:

Poet, Magician, Mountaineer, Polemicist and Pornographer, Aleister Crowley was the most famous, or infamous, name in twentieth century occultism. The popular image of him as, in the words of Francis King, "an insatiable sexual athlete, a pimp who lived on the immoral earnings of his girl-friends, and a junkie who daily took enough heroin to kill a roomful of people", has a basis in fact; but there were other, less obnoxious and despicable aspects of this highly original character. Crowley’s greatest legacy is his eclectic occult system: his Magick persists, a potent synthesis of Golden Dawn magic, oriental esoteric techniques, sexual magic, and the all-encompassing Law of Thelema with its two fundamental principles, "Every man and woman is a star" and the notorious "Do What Thou Wilt Shall Be the Whole of the Law". With his usual flair and style, Colin Wilson brings this complex and enigmatic figure to life and provides an engrossing portrait of the self-styled Great Beast, the man whom the contemporary press dubbed The Wickedest Man in the World.

Review Clergy of Dublin and Glendalough / Ulster Historical Foundation:

The Dioceses of Dublin and Glendalough have been united since 1216 and, unusually, contained two diocesan cathedrals: Christchurch and St Patrick's (until the disestablishment of the Church of Ireland in 1870). This volume lists the cathedral and parish clergy of the United Dioceses from the Middle Ages to the present, with biographies where possible. This volume is based on the work of Canon James Blennerhassett Leslie, rector of Kilsaran, Co. Louth from 1899-1951 and Chancellor of the Diocese of Armagh from 1934-1943. He published succession lists for several dioceses and left other lists in manuscript in the Library of the Representative Church Body. Three of those manuscripts form the foundation of this volume: Clergy of Dublin, Clergy of Glendalough and Fasti of Christ Church Cathedral. These are supplemented with lists for St Patricks Cathedral from H J Lawlor's Fasti of that Cathedral, published in 1930. The lists have been brought up-to-date to 2001. Over 4,000 names of clergy have been recorded, and brief historical notes on the parishes and churches in the dioceses are included. The present work is the fourth in the series of modern revisions of Canon Leslie's work to be published and is part fo the United Diocese' celebration of the Millennium. [+]
The work of revising and updating it for publication was carried out by W. J. R Wallace who retired as Senior History master in The High School, Dublin in 1996.

Review Living Like a Lord: The Second Marquis of Donegall, 1769-1844 (Explorations in Irish History) / Irish Books & Media:

Born and brought up in England, George Augustus Chichester, second Marquis of Donegall, inherited from his father in 1799 one of the greatest landed estates in Ireland—nearly a quarter of a million acres. Since the new Lord Donegall had hitherto spent much of his time gambling on borrowed money, a host of creditors now looked for payment. Donegall disputed the legality of many of the claimes, however, and retreated to Belfast where he defied all efforts to make him pay in full. He was to live in Belfast for the rest of his life, becoming notorious as the Marquis of Done ‘em all. The story of his prodigal son who became a prodigal father is full of fascinating glimpses of the lower life of the upper classes of his time—a world of debtors’ prisons, chancy deals, and Chancery proceedings. Apart from this Donegall’s career is interesting also for the curious affair of his marriage. When his eldest son was about to get married in 1819, Donegall’s own marriage to Anna May was declared illegal, more than twenty years after it had taken place. This made their seven children illegitimate and deprived them of their inheritance. Only a retrospective change in the law of matrimony (brought about by the Donegall case) saved the family from ruin. At a local level, Donegall’s presence in the town and his insatiable need for cash had a considerable, if unintended, effect on the development of Belfast. [+]
By seriously undermining the Chichester family’s wealth and influence he opened the way for the citizens to take its place.

Review The Fortunes of Mary Fortune (Penguin Australian Women's Library) / Penguin Putnam:

Little is known of Mary Fortune, Australia's first female writer of crime fiction. She kept her identity secret by writing under the names of Waif Wander of W. W. Arriving in Australia with her young son, she supported herself by writing about life on the goldfields and in the cities. Lucy Sussex's detective work has revealed something of the life of this remarkable woman, but her writing is her best testimony. Its verve and quality recreate for the modern reader the harshness of life, while reflecting many issues still relevant in contemporary society.

Review Hitler: Profile of a Dictator / Routledge:

Hitler: Profile of a Dictator is a fascinating exploration of Hitler and his role in the Third Reich. The book unravels the complex debate surrounding this notorious figure by examining his personality, his ideas and the nature of his power. Hitler surveys Hitler's career chronologically and includes coverage of: * the young idealogue * the Fuhrer State * Hitler's role in the outbreak of the Second World War * Hitler's involvement in the Holocaust. This second edition brings the continuing debate up to date in light of the most recent reseach, and speculates on the implications of the Irving trial.
