Review The Political Career of Thomas Wriothesley, First Earl of Southampton 1505-1550, Henry Viii's Last Chancellor (Studies in British History) / Edwin Mellen Press:

Thomas Wriothesley was a pivotal figure in the political and religious upheavals of the 1530s and 1540s, yet to date his role has not been considered in any depth. This work rectifies that deficiency, and in the process illuminates further the workings of mid-Tudor government and politics. Wriothesley worked with both Cardinal Wolsey and Thomas Cromwell, carried out Cromwell's plans for the re-organization of the privy council and other administrative offices, had a hand in the monastic dissolution and in the suppression of the Pilgrimage of Grace. For the rest of Henry's reign, Wriothesley was the conduit through which the king's wishes were made known. He held the office of lord chancellor into the reign of Edward.

Review Norbert Elias: An Introduction / Blackwell Pub:

The International Sociological Association recently voted Norbert Elias's The Civilizing Process as one of the top ten works of sociology in the twentieth century Elias's masterwork, his other writings, and his influence on the field of sociology are the subjects of this book. It is a readable and thoughtful intellectual portrait of Elias, generally regarded as one of the outstanding social thinkers of this century. His Civilizing Process traced the 'civilizing' of manners and personality in Western Europe since the late Middle Ages, and shows how it was related to the formation of states and the control of violence. His later writings, often scattered about and difficult, range from sport to human relations, through the changing relations between men and women to time, the growth of knowledge and the sciences, to the prospects of nuclear war. Mennell examines the full range of Elias's work and presents it in a cogent and accessible manner, all in a book which is a "pleasure to read. ".

Review A Comprehensive Index to Artist and Influence, the Journal of Black American Cultural History, 1981-1999: The Journal of Black American Cultural History, 1981-1999 (Black Studies, 8) / Edwin Mellen Press:

"Artist and Influence" is an annual journal published by the Hatch-Billops Collection in New York. Among other materials, Hatch-Billops houses an archival collection of oral histories of African American and some Asian and Hispanic artists from all fields of the performing, graphic and spatial arts. Interviews with black and Asian filmmakers, actors, musicians, sculptors, photographers, animators, choreographers, singers and painters provide information about the role of minority groups in the development of American arts. Many of the figures whose words are transcribed were elderly when they were interviewed. Their perceptions shed light on movements such as the Harlem Renaissance, the role of black musicians during the Depression, or the resistance of Hollywood filmmakers during the 1930s and 40s to using black actors and actresses. The volume offers a comprehensive index to material in journal articles.

Review John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland 1504-1553 / Oxford University Press, USA:

This biography presents the whole career of the controversial sixteenth century statesman, John Dudley. As Lord President of the council which governed Edward VI's minority, he was the most powerful man in England between 1550 and 1553, notorious for his attempt to alter the succession to the throne in favour of his daughter-in-law, Lady Jane Grey. This is a critical reassessment of a man who was the last medieval magnate and perhaps the greatest of the Tudor service nobility.

Review Menasseh Ben Israel and His World (Brill's Studies in Intellectual History) / Brill Academic Publishers:

This book, the results of a conference held in Israel in 1985, brings together many new perspectives on the significance of Menasseh ben Israel's ideas, and their relation to Christian millenarian views of the time and Jewish kabbalistic and messianistic thought. Scholars from America, Europe and Israel, working on various aspects of 17th century philosophy and religion present here in 18 essays important new data and interpretations of the Jewish and Christian background, and of Menasseh's ideas and their relation to those of Jewish and Christian thinkers of the time. Thus, this volume provides the grounds for reassessing, on the basis of recent scholarship, the ferment of messianic and millenarian ideas issuing from Holland and England in the mid-17th century.

Dewey code: 942.055092
List Price: $120.00
Price: $120.00

Review Elizabeth I: Always Her Own Free Woman / Ashgate Publishing:

This interdisciplinary collection by historians, cultural critics and literary scholars examines a variety of the political, social and cultural forces at work during the English Renaissance and beyond, forces that contributed to creating a wealth of artistic, literary and historical impressions of Elizabeth, her court, and the time period named after her, the Elizabethan age. Articles in the collection discuss Elizabeths' relationships, investigate the advice given her, explore connections between her court and the arts, and consider the role of Elizabeth's court in the political life of the nation. Some of the ways Elizabeth was understood and represented demonstrate society's fears and ambivalence about early modern women in power, while others celebrate her successes as England's first and only unmarried queen regnant.

Review Sir Frederick Sykes and the Air Revolution 1912-1918 (Cass Series--Studies in Air Power, 8) / Routledge:

This is a long-overdue study of Sir Frederick H. Sykes, Chief of the Air Staff of Britain's Royal Air Force (RAF) during the First World War. Historians, for the most part, have either overlooked Sykes or misinterpreted him, leaving a gap in the story of British flying. Contrary to previous images of Sykes, we now see that he was not a secretive intriguer or a tangential subject in RAF history. Rather, he played a fundamental part in organizing and leading British aviation from 1912 to the end of 1918. He provided organization, visionary guidance and efficient administrative control for the fledgling service that tried to survive infancy in the heat of battle. Sykes assumed command of the Air Staff immediately after the RAF's birth - on April 1 1918 - at a critical time, when the German spring offensives were about to split the French and British defensive lines and cause an Allied defeat. Sykes stepped in to quell organizational and bureaucratic fires by working harmoniously with the Air Minister, Lord Weir. Together they maintained control of the air service and established a strategic Independent Air Force prepared to bomb Berlin by the time the Armistice was signed on 11 November 1918. Sykes battled against fellow airmen, military traditionalists and French commanders to promote an incipient air revolution in warfare by instituting 'air-minded' use of new technologies to economize on manpower and apply air power tactically, strategically and independently from the inefficient army and navy competitive control that had plagued the air services. [+]
From the reconnaissance of 1914 to the devastating precision attacks of Desert Storm in the 1991 Gulf War, aircraft have transformed the modern battlefield. As this book shows, Sykes was important to that revolutionary process.

The book examines the importance of the suffrage movement to women's general emancipation in the twentieth century, and discusses its role as a catalyst to women's social and political equality.

Review The First Sea Lords: From Fisher to Mountbatten / Praeger Publishers:

This volume of essays is designed to fill an existing gap in the literature devoted to modern British naval history by providing a scholarly analysis of the First Sea Lords from the time of Admiral Fisher to that of Earl Mountbatten. Apart from assessing the role and performance in office of the individual First Sea Lords from the time of the Entente Cordiale in 1904 to the heyday of the Macmillan premiership in 1959, this book also reveals the extent of the influence each of these experienced sailor-administrators exerted upon British naval policy-making in the 20th century. Strongly rooted in primary as distinct from purely secondary source material, these essays are informative, fair and balanced portrayals of the individual First Sea Lords and the impact they have had upon both the Admiralty's administrative and strategic domains. Written by a range of established and emerging naval historians from around the world, this book gives praise where it is due, but it is also sharply critical of the shortcomings of those who, once installed in office, did precious little.

Review British Agent (Classics of Espionage) / Routledge:

This memoir describes a time when a hard-pressed British spy service, with only a handful of agents in Europe, sought to keep track of a continent descending into war. With Nazi Germany increasing in strength the stakes were high, yet this was still the low technology age of the amateur agent. John Whitwell, the pseudonym of senior British intelligence officer Leslie Nicholson (1902-1973), conducted his secret work in a succession of European capitals without diplomatic cover, and at times with the Germans and Soviets perilously close. His story is not one of derring-do, or spectacular coups, but of underground work when every scrap of intelligence was hard-won, and when dark fantasy and uncomfortable fact were exceedingly difficult to distinguish.

Review The History of a False Illusion-Memoirs on the Communist Movement in Poland, 1918-1938 / Edwin Mellen Press:

A translation (from the Yiddish) of the memoirs of the Polish-Jewish workers leader Pinkus Minc (1895-1962). Minc played a leading role in the Jewish Bund in the early 1920s, leading its left wing in a fusion with the Polish Communist Party in 1922. Minc was active in organizing workers in Poland, West Byelo Russia and West Ukraine. He spent much time in prison. In the face of severe state repression, Minc was forced to leave Poland in the mid-1930s, whereupon he worked with Trotskyite groups in Prague, Danzig, Copenhagen, and finally Paris, where he was a close collaborator and friend of Trotsky's son Leon Sedov. The publication of his memoirs contributes significantly to our understanding of the East European workers movements. It should also interest scholars in Jewish Studies, Russian Studies, political science and personal history.
