Review The History of Parliament: the House of Commons, 1660-1690 (3 vols) (History of Parliament) / Haynes Publishing:

Here is the period from the Restoration of Charles II in 1660 to the Revolution of 1688 and the Convention Parliament which followed it. These three volumes cover the period of constitutional reconstruction after the Interregnum and the political crises of the 1670s and early 1680s. The three volumes contain 2,040 biographical articles and 269 constituency articles. An Introductory Essay by Basil Duke Henning analyses information about the age, education, social background of the Members and their residential and electoral relationship with their constituencies. Questions concerning how far non-political factors influenced a Member's party political alignment are also examined.

Review Calendar, Chronology And Worship: Studies in Ancient Judaism And Early Christianity (Ancient Judaism and Early Christianity/Arbeiten Zur Geschichte Des ... Antiken Judentums Und Des Urchristentums) / Brill Academic Pub:

This book takes as its theme the related issues of calendar, chronology and worship, as they were conceived and practised in ancient Jewish and early Christian times. After a general discussion of the way the three issues are related, there follow six chapters on the calendar, first the standard Jewish calendar, then the Qumran calendar (giving particular attention to the Book of Enoch and the Temple Scroll) and finally the Christian calendar - both the standard Christian calendar and that observed by the Montanists. Three chapters on chronology come next, one of them offering a chronological solution to a puzzling calendrical problem in the Dead Sea Scrolls, another relating Jewish eschatological expectations to New Testament teaching, and a third examining the chronological calculations of the Hellenistic Jew Demetrius, the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs, and the Book of Jubilees. The three concluding chapters, on worship, include an investigation of the historical development of the Psalter and a careful survey of the relationship between ancient Jewish worship and early Christian. The book discusses a variety of issues that arise in modern biblical, intertestamental and patristic study, some neglected, some very controversial, and throws new light upon them.

Hardbound. This work pursues to critically probe Black American Intellectualism and Culture in the organizational construct of intellectual studies; cultural studies; literary studies; and social thought. Accent has been placed on an interdisciplinary focus of examining the ethos and memory of Africana people. The intangible view of Africana people is reported and illustrated from an African American prism. This study is an unconventional advance reviewing: history, narratives, biography, autobiography, and epistemology. As Africana scholars research society in the form of politics, business, social, education, political, and economic institutions - the retentive ideas of Africana values, mores, and folkways become imperative to examine events from an assembly of viewpoints. In fact, these variables provide a foundation for amassing query, that narrates and appraises Africana people.

Review Proof-Sheets of a Bibliography of the Languages of the North American Indians / Martino Publishing:

Reprint. Hardbound. Oversized octavo. xl, 1135 p. illus. , facsims. 30 cm. Washington, Government Printing Office, 1885. This work was begun as a catalogue for the use of the members of the Bureau of Ethnology, and as a basis for a projected work by the Director of the Bureau on the classification of North American tribes by language. Over 5000 titles are described in Pilling's work, making this the most comprehensive bibliography on the subject in Besterman [350]. [+]
This is much more than just a bibliography on languages. It covers most early contact with the Indians, such as Schoolcraft, Humbolt and Elliot, and all cultural contact with native-americans from the first contact. Frequent annotations are provided, as well as collations and cross references. The original is quite scarce, having been printed in an edition of only 100 copies. A fundamental work.

Review Exposure Publishing / Muse and Messiah - The Life, Imagination and Legacy of Bruno Schulz (Axis Series) Publication date: 2006-12-12
Dewey code: 809
List Price: $26.95
Price: $126.16

Review Muse and Messiah - The Life, Imagination and Legacy of Bruno Schulz (Axis Series) / Exposure Publishing:

Muse & Messiah is the first full comparative study of the Polish-Jewish writer and artist Bruno Schulz (1892-1942), based on the latest materials, including new interviews with ex-students and biographers, Polish texts, plus all worldwide English studies and influenced works. Rare photographs, detailed chronology, and recent images are included for comparison. Schulz's life and themes are examined with detailed Polish and European influences. New, first-hand corrected information about his home region adds a new dimension to his creative world within contemporary Polish-Jewish tensions. Controversial international debates about his last works are brought up to date in a work that seeks to place his poetic-artistic achievement more centrally to highlight an original, modernist and yet universal vision. Reviews: 'An interdisciplinary study of dazzling scholarship, Muse & Messiah with its wide-ranging references, allusions, associations, and citations is a true compendium of learning and speculation. By placing Schulz in the many different contexts that shaped his life and work Banks is able to find links, parallels, analogues and interconnections that are often unexpected and surprising, and always rich in complex meaning. Yet, Banks argues in his horizon-broadening interpretation, Schulz cannot be confined to any set of contexts, and, like Blake and Yeats, is ultimately a poet who exists in his own self-created mythic world. ' Professor Daniel Gerould (The Graduate Center, CUNY) 'Fans of lost Mitteleuropa, take note: InkerMen Press continues its Hoffmannesque list with an ambitious study of Bruno Schulz's life and work that teases out some universal literary threads from the Polish Jewish writer's private and idiosyncratic cosmos. ' Victoria Nelson, author of The Secret Life of Puppets 'Brian Banks, in his new book, shows us a Bruno Schulz that was not known before. [+]
He reveals the unknown details of the writer's life with a true detective's passion. The rare ability of detailed interpretation and author's erudition lets us discover the mystery of Schulz's hermetic fiction. It will be enjoyed by both devoted Schulz's readers and those who have yet to encounter his work. This book will be a great source of information for everyone interested in the life and work of the author of Cinnamon Shops. ' Tomasz Mackiewicz (Warsaw University) About the Author: Brian R. Banks began writing as a prelude to living on the London streets, in the Francis Thompson rather than Orwellian mode. Huysmans' A Rebours focused a five-year study of that author's life at the British Museum aided by transcripted notebooks and the generous help of Professor Colin Burns. Occasional articles, reviews and two private poetry collections were published, then The Image of J. -K. Huysmans (1990, New York). This period coincided with the finding of a true muse and running a bookshop. A few years later Muse & Messiah: The Life, Imagination & Legacy of Bruno Schulz was written, in tandem with a book of essays, aided not by grants but personal assistance given without financial interest in Poland, Ukraine, and Czech Republic. The author currently lives somewhere in Central Europe.

Review Donald Thomson in Arnhem Land / Melbourne University Publishing:

This collection presents the personal writings of Donald Thomson, an Australian who became embroiled in a bitter legal battle that erupted in 1932 when a group of Japanese pearl fishermen raped a number of Aboriginal women. Arnhem Land Aboriginals retaliated by killing five of the Japanese and were subsequently sentenced to death. Thomson accepted a federal commission to investigate the case, and, by communicating with the Aboriginals, managed to defuse the situation and secure their liberation. The account of Thomson's first meeting with the Aboriginal leader Wongo tells of the electric exchange and eventual friendship that Thomson developed with Wongo, a partnership that enabled him to study local customs and language. Thomson's writing is unique in that it offers a full picture of Aboriginal peoples, presenting them as individuals and active agents in local history.

The authors use the content of the diary as the basis of detailed discussions on night attacks, poison gas, the introduction of the tank, hurricane bombardment and creeping barrages.
