Review A Biography of E. Azalia Smith Hackley, 1867-1922, African-American Singer and Social Activist (Black Studies, V. 14) / Edwin Mellen Press:

Madame E. Azalia Hackley was an African-American classical singer, social worker, writer, philanthropist, and activist who championed the use of African-American spirituals among her own people as a tool for social change. Her efforts led to the use of spirituals as freedom songs during the Civil Rights Movement. This work uses newspaper accounts and archive studies documenting Madame Hackley's tours cross-coutry and abroad to rasie funds for African-American classical musicians. It shows Hackley's intense devotion to her African-American roots, as she easily could have passed for white. Nevertheless, she traveled throughout the South in "Jim Crow" railway cars by choice. This work also recovers several of her influential published works, including "A guide to voice culture" (1909); "The coloured girl beautiful" (1916), an etiquette book for African-American women desiring professional jobs; and "hints to young coloured artists" a series of acticles designed to help young African-American classical musicans succed.

Review The Figure of Joseph in Post-Biblical Jewish Literature (Arbeiten Zur Geschichte Des Antiken Judentums Und Des Urchristentums, No 16) (Arbeiten Zur Geschichte ... Judentums Und Des Urchristentums, No 16) / Brill Academic Publishers:

This book is a comparative study in the hermeneutics of the ancient interpretations of the biblical Joseph story. Assuming that every interpretation results from a creative encounter between the ultimately open text of Scripture and the specific thought world of the interpreter, it examines the particular way in which each exegete construes the biblical outline of Joseph's character. Paying special attention to the literary nature of the sources, the study begins with an analysis of the narrative methods and the hermeneutic potential of the biblical story, and then proceeds to the inter-testamental evidence. The central concern of this study is to compare the different interpretations of the philosopher Philo, the historian Josephus and the Midrash Genesis Rabbah. These sources do not only range over a considerable amount of time but significantly derive respectively from the Greek and Hebrew cultural realm. Consequently, their figures of Joseph fulfil distinctly different purposes, ranging from an idealisation of Joseph as a Hellenistic politician to autobiographical apologetics and religious instruction.

Review Leaders of Public Opinion in Ireland (Ganesha - Irish Library) / Ganesha Publishing:

This early work of Lecky’s, originally published in 1861, was radically altered in 1871 and again in 1903. This last and best edition excised a chapter on Swift and vastly expanded the essay on Daniel O’Connell to occupy a second volume. Henry Flood and Henry Grattan are the subjects of the first volume, and these essays make up perhaps the best and most balanced account of its kind. It is a valuable companion to, and continuation of, Lecky’s History of Ireland in the Eighteenth Century. —out of print and valuable to all Irish historians —best and final edition.

Review Henry Howard, the Poet Earl of Surrey: A Life / Oxford University Press, USA:

The first comprehensive biography of Henry Howard, this book fills a major gap in the history of early modern British culture. Sessions's narrative combines historical scholarship with close readings of poetic texts and Tudor paintings to reveal the unique life of the first Renaissance courtier and a poet who wrote and created radically new forms (such as the English sonnet and blank verse).

Review Gill & MacMillan / Patrick Kavanagh: A Biography Publication date: 2001-11

Review Patrick Kavanagh: A Biography / Gill & MacMillan:

Seamus Heaney has coupled Patrick Kavanagh (1904-67) with W. B. Yeats as the two most influential figures in twentieth century Irish poetry. Kavanagh was born in Co. Monaghan, the son of a cobbler-cum-small farmer. He left school at thirteen but continued to educate himself, reading and writing poetry in his spare time. In 1929 he began contributing verses to the Irish Statesman and was soon publishing in Irish and English journals. His first collection, Ploughman and Other Poems, appeared in 1936 and was followed by an autobiography, The Green Fool, in 1938. In 1939 he moved to Dublin where he spent the rest of his life as a freelance writer. He first emerged as an important literary voice with his long poem, The Great Hunger, in 1942. [+]
Other collections appeared in the following decade to growing critical acclaim. Kavanagh's work was his life, but he was also part of social and literary Dublin for almost thirty years in the company of a gifted generation of writers, among them Flann O'Brien and Brendan Behan. His position in the history of Irish poetry is secure. Antoinette Quinn's biography will be the standard life for many years to come.
