Review Hiratsuka Raicho and Early Japanese Feminism (Brill's Japanese Studies Library) / Brill Academic Publishers:This work on Hiratsuka Raich? at last fully assesses her key role in the history of the Japanese women's movement. It provides a full and contextual analysis of the life (1886-1971) and work of this leading Japanese feminist, all in the light of the changes affecting women in Japan. At the same time the author compares her working with similar historical shifts and movements in western countries, notably Great Britain and the United States. International comparisons at the level of personal biography and associated ideas are made, to see the influence of Western feminists on Hiratsuka's feminism. Hiratsuka is compared with other Japanese feminists, whereby her pivotal role in the history of the Japanese women's movement becomes clear. With extensive footnotes for further reference - and research -, a number of appendices, a detailed bilingual glossary and bibliography; a true reference on an important subject.

Review Lloyd George: The Goat in the Wilderness (Modern Revivals in History) / Ashgate Publishing:Lloyd George fell from power in October 1922, "never to hold office again". As a result he has tended to be written out of the politics of the 1920s. But John Campbell argues that he remained the central figure on the political stage until 1931, and that the energies of Baldwin and MacDonald were very largely directed to making sure that he did not come back. Working with Keynes and others to find a remedy for mass unemployment, Lloyd George remains the most fertile and progressive figure in British politics. But the two-party trap was closing on the Liberal party, and all his efforts could not restore it.

Review Out of the Depths, Or, the Triumph of the Cross (African-American Women Writers, 1910-1940) / MacMillan Publishing Company:African-American Women Writers, 1910-1940 seriesHenry Louis Gates, Jr. , General EditorThe past decade has seen the increasing popularity of African-American women writers, from Alice Walker, to the Delany sisters, to Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison. Although African-American women have been publishing their work since at least 1733, when Phyllis Wheatley published her book of poems in London, their writings in the past have been largely neglected and hard to find. This series helps fill that void by reprinting in their original format the works by black women writers who published during the first half of the twentieth century. Born a slave in 1860, Nellie Arnold Plummer was an educator in the schools of Maryland and Washington, D. C. , for forty-five years. Her family narrative and spiritual biography Out of the Depths, or The Triumph of the Cross documents, through excerpts from the diary of her father and letters by family members, the trials, hardships, and triumphs of the Plummers through slavery into freedom.

Review Winston S. Churchill, 1874-1965: A Comprehensive Historiography and Annotated Bibliography (Bibliographies of World Leaders) / Greenwood Press:Perhaps the most influential figure in 20th century British, imperial, and world history, Winston S. Churchill has been the subject of numerous studies, biographies, and controversies, but not of a recent comprehensive bibliography. The most extensive and up-to-date bibliographic work on Churchill, this book provides a full historiographical survey and over 3,000 annotated entries on all of the important writings by and about Churchill. Reflecting Churchill's versatility, dynamism, and influence, the book emphasizes his background and context, covering, for instance, works on fifteen major controversies associated with Churchill, some thirty biographies ranging from those that glorify to solid, scholarly studies, to extreme revisionist attacks. The final historiographical chapter points to subjects that would benefit from further research. Divided into two parts, the book opens with a historiographical narrative, covering historical and biographical events associated with the life and times of Winston Churchill. In addition to chapters on archival material, reference works, and studies on a wide range of topics pertaining to Churchill's life and multi-faceted career, part I includes a section on Churchill and the Internet. The second half of the book includes 3099 annotated entries on all works cited in part I. The two parts are fully cross-referenced, and the book also includes a short chronology and full indexes. The book will provide a valuable resource for students, scholars, and other researchers interested in Churchill and his era.

Review The Staffords, Earls of Stafford and Dukes of Buckingham: 1394-1521 (Cambridge Studies in Medieval Life and Thought: Third Series) / Cambridge University Press:As one of the richest and most powerful land-owning families in later medieval England, the Staffords played their leading part in the politics of their time. This book traces the often complex relations between the three Stafford Dukes of Buckingham and the Crown. In doing so it casts light upon the attitude of successive English kings towards the nobility as a whole, and reassessed the political and military strength of the ruling class. The Staffords derived most of their influence from the ownership of land. Because of the survival of a widely scattered but unique family archive, Dr Rawcliffe has been able to study in unusually close detail the management of their estates and the deployment of their finances, as well as the reorganization of their household, which changed over the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries from a large peripatetic body to a smaller resident establishment where the third Duke of Buckingham could indulge his taste for cultural pursuits.
