Review Notes from the Shed: A Journal / Macmillan Art Publishing:

Hanna Kay describes her journal, begun in summer 2003, as a dialogue between one and oneself. She says: Keeping a journal is like meeting this person inside me head-on. And that person is an artist whose journal helps the reader understand something of the way an artist thinks. Both her journal and the paintings produced in her studio measure the passing of the seasons and the artists emotional empathy with the Australian landscape the and living things about her as she responds to the seasonal changes wrought by Nature. She says: The locals [in rural NSW] refer to my Studio as the shed. For me the 200 square metres framed by iron-bark posts and corrugated iron, is a sanctuary in which I dare to experiment, question, or be idle. The solid structure and the five acres that surround it protect me from the worlds follies. Her observations of the environment are recorded poetically, her own musing interspersed with references to world literature. The book is dedicated: To Nature, while shes still around.

Review The Diary of Dawid Sierakowak / Jewish Heritage Project, Inc.:

After the liberation of the Lodz Ghetto, Dawid Sierakowiak's notbooks were found stacked on a cookstove, ready to be burned for heat. Young Sierakowiak was one of more than 60,000 Jews who perished in that notorious urban slave camp, a man-made hell which was the longest surviving concentration of Jews in Nazi Europe. The diary comprises a remarkable legacy left to humanity by its teenage author. It is one of the most fastidiously detailed accounts ever rendered of modern life in human bondage. The luxury of life was never returned to David, but a new awareness of it richness can be our reward for reading the diary of this brilliantly and brutally deprived young human being.

Review The Figure of Joseph in Post-Biblical Jewish Literature (Arbeiten Zur Geschichte Des Antiken Judentums Und Des Urchristentums, No 16) (Arbeiten Zur Geschichte ... Judentums Und Des Urchristentums, No 16) / Brill Academic Publishers:

This book is a comparative study in the hermeneutics of the ancient interpretations of the biblical Joseph story. Assuming that every interpretation results from a creative encounter between the ultimately open text of Scripture and the specific thought world of the interpreter, it examines the particular way in which each exegete construes the biblical outline of Joseph's character. Paying special attention to the literary nature of the sources, the study begins with an analysis of the narrative methods and the hermeneutic potential of the biblical story, and then proceeds to the inter-testamental evidence. The central concern of this study is to compare the different interpretations of the philosopher Philo, the historian Josephus and the Midrash Genesis Rabbah. These sources do not only range over a considerable amount of time but significantly derive respectively from the Greek and Hebrew cultural realm. Consequently, their figures of Joseph fulfil distinctly different purposes, ranging from an idealisation of Joseph as a Hellenistic politician to autobiographical apologetics and religious instruction.

Review Henry Oldenburg: Shaping the Royal Society / Oxford University Press, USA:

Henry Oldenburg, born in 1619 in Bremen, Germany, first came to England as a diplomat on a mission to see Oliver Cromwell. He stayed on in England and in 1662 became the Secretary of the Royal Society, and its best known member to the entire learned world of his time. Through his extensive correspondence, now published, he disseminated the Society's ideals and methods at home and abroad. He fostered and encouraged the talents of many scientists later to be far more famous than he, including Newton, Flamsteed, Malpighi, and Leeuwenhoek with whom, as with many others, he developed real friendship. He founded and edited the Philosophical Transactions, the world's oldest scientific journal. His career sheds new light on the intellectual world of his time, especially its scientific aspects, and on the development of the Royal Society; his private life expands our knowledge of social mobility, the urban society, and the religious views of his time.

Review Ben-Gurion, Zionism and American Jewry: 1948-1963 (Israeli History, Politics and Society) / Routledge:

Based on archival material, this intriguing book examines David Ben-Gurion's influence on the relationship between the state of Israel, the Zionist Organization and American Jewry between 1948 and 1963 when he served as Prime Minister and Minister of Defence. The author discusses how Ben-Gurion was largely instrumental in forming Israel's policies throughout the first two decades of the country's existence and, due to his position, personality and prestige, he was able to influence the fashioning of political structures as well as their content. The book discusses both the political motives of the leaders and the ideological discourse, in order to understand their dependency and to highlight their significance in the terms Diaspora and exile, the centrality of the State of Israel, and the role played by the Jews of America. As such, this will be of great interest to scholars of Middle East Studies, Jewish Studies, and ethnicity and nationalism.
