Review The Adams of Fleet Street, Instrument Makers to King George III: Instrument Makers to King George III / Ashgate Publishing:A comprehensive study of the instrument-making business run by the Adams family, from its foundation in 1734 to bankruptcy in 1817. It is based on detailed research in the archival sources as well as examination of extant instruments and publications by George Adams senior and his two sons, George junior and Dudley. Separate chapters are devoted to George senior's family background, his royal connections and his new globes; George junior's numerous publications, and his dealings with van Marum; and Dudley's dabbling with "medico-electrical therapeutics". The book is illustrated with plates from the Adams's own publications and with examples of instruments ranging from unique museum pieces - such as the "Prince of Wales" microscope - and globes to the more common, even mundane, items of the kind seen in salesrooms and dealers - the surveying, navigational and military instruments that formed the backbone of the business. The appendices include facsimiles of trade catalogues and an annotated short-title listing of the Adams family's publications, which also covers American and Continental editions, as well as the posthumous ones by W. & S. Jones.

Review Notable Black Memphians / Cambria Press:This biographical and historical study by Miriam DeCosta-Willis (PhD, Johns Hopkins University and the first African American faculty member of Memphis State University) traces the evolution of a major Southern city through the lives of men and women who overcame social and economic barriers to create artistic works, found institutions, and obtain leadership positions that enabled them to shape their community. Documenting the accomplishments of Memphians who were born between 1795 and 1972, it contains photographs and biographical sketches of 223 individuals (as well as brief notes on 122 others), such as musicians Isaac Hayes and Aretha Franklin, activists Ida B. Wells and Benjamin L. Hooks, politicians Harold Ford Sr. and Jr. , writers Sutton Griggs and Jerome Eric Dickey, and Bishop Charles Mason and Archbishop James Lyke-all of whom were born in Memphis or lived in the city for over a decade. Also included are short biographies of barbers, sanitation workers, and postal employees such as Alma Morris, T. O. Jones, and Tom Lee-ordinary citizens who made extraordinary contributions to their community. The result of ten years of painstaking research in archives and libraries, this study draws upon interviews, private papers, newspaper articles, and photographic collections to illuminate Black achievements in Memphis, Tennessee. [+]
Located in a bend of the Mississippi River, in the heart of the Bible Belt, and in the center of a tri-state region that includes Arkansas, Mississippi, and Tennessee, Memphis is the site of a rich African American culture that finds expression in blues and jazz, in poetry and fiction, and in painting and sculpture. Less well known, perhaps, are Black cultural expressions in business, athletics, and medicine: for example, the founding of hospitals and a medical school; the building of a public park/auditorium and the first Black-owned baseball stadium in the country; and the creation of the South's first integrated law firm and first Black savings and loan association. Sons and daughters of the city include city and county mayors, an Olympic medalist, an Oscar-winning actor, and former member of the Federal Communications Commission, CEO of the Regional Medical Center, president of Colorado State University, and professor of orthopedic surgery at Harvard Medical School. The lives of these outstanding Black Memphians provide a context for understanding and interpreting the social, political, and cultural history of a city in the Deep South. Notable Black Memphians is a vital addition to all collections in African American studies and American history.

Review Woman in Front of the Sun: On Becoming a Writer / Univ of Georgia Pr:In this collection of essays woven with poems and folklore, Judith Ortiz Cofer tells the story of how she became a poet and writer and explores her love of words, her discovery of the magic of language, and her struggle to carve out time to practice her art. A native of Puerto Rico, Cofer came to the mainland as a child. Torn between two cultures and two languages, she learned early the power of words and how to wield them. She discovered her love for the subtleties, sounds, and rhythms of the written word when a Roman Catholic nun and teacher bent on changing traditions for the better gave her books of high literature to read, some of which were forbidden by the church. Later, as an adult, demands from her family and her profession made it difficult for Cofer to find time to devote to her art, but her need and determination to express herself led to solutions that can help all artists challenged with the limits of time. Cofer recalls the family cuentos, or stories, that inspire her and shows how they speak to all artists, all women, all people. She encourages her readers to insist on the right to be themselves and to pursue their passions. A book that entertains, instructs, and enthralls, Woman in Front of the Sun will be invaluable to students of poetry and creative nonfiction and will be a staple in every creative writing classroom as well as an inspiration to all those who write.

Review A Life of Frederick, Prince of Wales, 1707-1751: A Connoisseur of the Arts / Edwin Mellen Press:This book considers the life of Frederick, Prince of Wales (1707-51), who established himself as Britain's greatest royal collector between Charles I and George IV. He first acquired many of the finest works of art in the present-day Royal Collection, but gained notoriety as "Poor Fred", known primarily for having predeceased his father, George II, after his 24 years as heir to the throne. The late Dr. Frances Vivian's biography examines Frederick's role as an outstanding connoisseur and exhibits in detail for the first time his architectural commissions and his patronage of a wide spectrum of the arts.

Review Biographical Dictionary of European Labor Leaders: A-L / Greenwood Press:In almost 1,500 biographical entries, this comprehensive, authoritative reference work covers the European labor movement from its origins to the present. The entries are selected from all countries of Europe, from Ireland in the west to Russia in the east and from Finland in the north to Greece in the south. Written by specialists in the labor history of the subject countries, the biographies focus on presenting basic factual information, leaving interpretation and argument to more detailed studies. Entries are arranged alphabetically, irrespective of the country of origin, emphasizing the Europeanness of the project in an era when barriers between European states are being rapidly demolished. A state-by-state breakdown of the entries provides an additional source of information. Labor is defined broadly to include trade unions, political parties, cooperatives, and anarcho-syndicalist groups, but not so broadly as to include state-controlled bodies that lack democratic procedures. A selective, but substantial bibliography provides a guide to further reading. Extensive cross-referencing and a substantial index illustrate the complex links, both intellectual and practical, between labor leaders of different states and regions.
