Originally published in 1961, and now with a new preface by the editors, this is one of the fullest and most authentic accounts of the life of a saint to have come from medieval England.

Review Yale University Press / The Prime Minister of Taste: A Portrait of Horace Walpole Publication date: 2001-05-01
Dewey code: 709.2
List Price: $65.00

Review The Prime Minister of Taste: A Portrait of Horace Walpole / Yale University Press:

In this intriguing book, Morris Brownell offers a fresh account of the career and influence of Horace Walpole (1717-1797), the great English man of letters and art historian. Rejecting both the traditional view of Walpole as a trifling collector of curiosities and the more recent assessment of him as a sober social historian and connoisseur, Brownell argues that Walpole grew to become a serious patron, collector, and historian of the arts - "the Prime Minister of Taste". Drawing on vast Walpole archival materials and on his astonishing forty volumes of letters, Brownell describes the formation of young Walpole's taste and interest in the visual arts. Brownell argues that England's leading portrait engraver, George Vertue, converted Walpole from Grand Tour taste in painting to a life-long study of English portraits. The book discusses the significance of Walpole's collection of English historical portraits and French portraits of the ancien regime, and it analyses Walpole's fascination with portraiture, comparing the painted portraits Walpole collected and wrote about to the literary portraits he penned in his letters. Walpole's passion for the art of portraiture was not the trifling pastime he pretended, Brownell says, in fact it was the source of his greatest literary achievement - a gallery of literary portraits of the English aristocracy as fine as the painted portraits of Reynolds and Gainsborough.

Review Metro Books,London / Nye Bevan: A Biography Publication date: 1997-09-29
Dewey code: 941.082092

Review Nye Bevan: A Biography / Metro Books,London:

An unauthorized biography of Aneurin Bevan, this work depicts him as a man of deep humanity and generous anger, and as the most compelling orator of his generation, who preached and fought for true socialism. The author argues that Bevan's life highlights the rise and fall of the idea of democratic socialism in Britain. He traces the development of Bevan's ideas from his early experiences as a militant young miner in South Wales, up to his election to Parliament as MP for Ebbow Vale in 1939 and onwards to his appointment by Attlee as Minister of Health, thereby being instrumental in the creation of the National Health Service.

Dewey code: 942.038

Review The Chronica Maiora of Thomas Walsingham (1376-1422) / Boydell Press:

Winner of a CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title Award Translated by David Preest with introduction and notes by James G. Clark Thomas Walsingham's Chronica maiora is one of the most comprehensive and colourful chronicles to survive from medieval England. Walsingham was a monk at St Albans Abbey, a royal monastery and the premier repository of public records, and therefore well placed to observe the political machinations of this period at close hand. Moreover, he knew the monarchs and many of the nobles personally and is able to offer insights into their actions unmatched by any other authority. It is this narrative, transmitted through the popular Tudor histories of Hall, Stow and Holinshed, which provides the principle source for Shakespeare's sequence of history plays. Covering almost fifty years, the narrative provides the most authoritative account of one of the most turbulent periods in English history, from the last years of Edward III (1376-77) to the premature death of Henry V (1422). Walsingham describes the many dramas of this period in vivid detail, including the Peasants' Revolt (1381), the deposition and murder of Richard II (1399-1400), The Welsh revolt of Owain Glyn Dwr (1403) and Henry V's victory at Agincourt (1415); they are brought to life here in this new translation.

Review HarperCollins Illustrated / Georgiana's World Publication date: 2001-10-01
Price: $145.95

Review Georgiana's World / HarperCollins Illustrated:

As one of the most flamboyant and influential women of the late 18th century, Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire was an icon of her time. Born Lady Georgiana Spencer, she married the fifth Duke of Devonshire in 1774; within a short space of time she had become the undisputed queen of fashionable society, adored by the Prince Regent, an intimate of Marie-Antoinette, an influential Whig hostess and a darling of the common people. Yet for all her aura of public glamour, Georgiana's personal life was fraught with suffering brought on by her compulsive gambling, which led to insurmountable debts and ignominy, and her search for love, which caused misery and exile. "Georgiana's World" is the illustrated version of Amanda Foreman's bestselling biography, "Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire", and brings a fresh perspective to her life and times. Filled with images of the people and places she actually knew, a series of special features explore such aspects of 18th-century life as aristocracy.

Review Oxford University Press, USA / The Making of Fianna Fail Power in Ireland 1923-1948 Publication date: 1995-08-24
Dewey code: 324.2417083
List Price: $234.00
Price: $172.19

Review The Making of Fianna Fail Power in Ireland 1923-1948 / Oxford University Press, USA:

This is the first major study of the origins, development, and strategies of Fianna Fail; showing how the party achieved its central role in Irish politics. Dunphy explores its historical development, looking at its organizational structure, the evolution of party ideology, and the interactions between party and state. He analyses how the changing social structure of Ireland affected Fianna Fail policies, and demonstrates how the inadequacies of rival political parties' responses to crises benefited Fianna Fail. The author locates the historical experience of Fianna Fail rule in Ireland within the broader dimensions of European politics. The result is a fascinating mixture of detailed empirical research and broader theoretical analysis which reconstructs Fianna Fail's rise to power and explains how it retained its position of dominance.

Dewey code: 941.081092

Review Keir Hardie: A Biography / Metro Books,London:

This is the biography of former Labour leader Keir Hardie. "I am an agitator," he once said. "My work has consisted of trying to stir up a divine discontent with wrong. " Widely regarded at the time of his death in 1915 as a failure, he is seen today as the inspirational founder of the Labour party, his name a source of pride. It was not just his socialism, but his utter and genuine principle in pursuing it. He believed in it almost religiously and was willing to suffer for that belief.
