Review Hans Frank, Lebensraum and the Final Solution / Palgrave Macmillan:

On the outbreak of WWII Hans Frank was appointed governor general of Poland. Heinrich Himmler was responsible for the extermination camps and Frank claimed he did not become aware of the mass killings until late in the war. Frank was captured in May 1945 and was accused of crimes against humanity at the Nuremberg War Crimes Trial. He said at his trial: "I myself have never installed an extermination camp for Jews, or promoted the existence of such camps; but if Adolf Hitler personally has laid that dreadful responsibility on his people, then it is mine too, for we have fought against Jewry for years; and we have indulged in the most horrible utterances. " Hans Frank was found guilty and executed on October 1, 1946. This scholarly study from Martyn Housden examines Frank's career and complex character to shed light upon the Lebensraum project in the East and the carrying out of the Final Solution.

Review MY SOUL IS MY OWN CL / Other:

"My Soul is My Own" presents the lives of early 20th-century African-American women in a unique context - their own words. The women themselves are as extraordinary as the language they use to describe their experiences within their families, in the university and subsequently in the work force at a time when academic and professional institutions rejected both women and African-Americans explicitly on the basis of gender and race. Gwendolyn Etter-Lewis, a linguist who specializes in African-American women's spoken and written narratives, offers a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the complex lives of African-American women who dared to cross the threshold of white and dominant professions. Etter-Lewis takes exception to "tradition" and challenges long-held assumptions about the study and interpretation of African-American women's lives and speech patterns. With this multidisciplinary approach, she simultaneously offers an informative and thought-provoking analysis of the content and structure of the narrative texts.

Review Holocaust Survivors [Two Volumes]: A Biographical Dictionary / Greenwood Press:

Although there are more and more Holocaust memoirs on the market, this essential collection is the first to present such a large number of biographical profiles of survivors for a broad readership. Holocaust Survivors: A Biographical Dictionary comprises 278 entries on more than 500 survivors of the World War II genocide. The profiles, averaging 500 words, are mostly of Jews, both individuals and family members, from throughout Europe. Organized alphabetically, the essays cover their background, circumstances and ordeals during the war, aftermath, and life achievements, including family and career. Most are on ordinary people who have extraordinary life stories. Many stories come from interviews with the survivors by the author. Excerpts from primary documents and quotations are occasionally interspersed. Suggested reading or references per entry are included where possible. Added value comes from an historical introduction, chronology, resource guide, lists of entries, photos, and comprehensive index. The set will be most valuable to high school students and general readers who do not want to read a full-length memoir. [+]
There is an intense and continuing demand for these stories. At the high school level, the set will supplement units on genocide and provides valuable distillation for research and reports to meet the World History Standard concerning the Nazi regime and the Holocaust. Some Holocaust survivors speak about their experiences at schools and public forums, and organizations representing such speakers are listed per state. At the college level, the profiles can be used for starting research in Holocaust history courses. The general reader will become familiar with a range of survivor stories and also use this a springboard for further reading. Examples of people profiled: Marie Blum-Albert-Belgian Jew who smuggled hundreds of Jewish children to safety through a hospital for tubercular children and kept many from being transported to Auschwitz. Abraham A. Foxman spent his pre-school years in Lithuania as a hidden child cared for by his Polish nanny who had him baptized as a Catholic and who taught him to hate Jews. Reilli Herchmer-Sinti fugitive who as a young girl delivered messages for the Nazi resistance underground, survived the Ravensbruck camp, and later moved to Denver with her American husband and raised a family. Victor Klemperer-Dresden professor who survived the war and the Allied fire bombing of the city because he was married to a gentile. He kept a secret, meticulous diary, published to acclaim in the 1990s, of their day-to-day existence as conditions deteriorated as the war progressed. Sam Nussbaum-Jewish-Polish plumber whose skills and strength allowed him to survive a Nazi labor camp. Halina Wind Preston was sent to prison after her Polish landlady exposed her for trying to live outside the ghetto and pass as a Christian, escaped from prison, and spent the rest of the war hiding in the sewers of Lvov.

Review The Later Letters of Peter of Blois (Auctores Britannici Medii Aevi) / Oxford University Press, USA:

This volume makes available a collection of previously unedited letters by the famous medieval correspondent Peter of Blois. Though Peter never attained a rank higher than archdeacon during his fifty years of service in the church, his works were widely read in the Middle Ages. The most original of his writings were his letters, and this volume contains seventy-eight letters written in the last years of Peter's life, mostly while he was Archdeacon of London during the reign of John. Unlike his earlier letters, which Peter himself edited and published, these later letters did not circulate widely. Sixty-four are printed for the first time, while others have improved readings and sometimes additional paragraphs from manuscripts previously unknown. Peter wrote vividly and fluently about contemporary events and problems, in particular the Interdict. More than half his correspondents in the collection are members of monastic orders, several being Cistercians. New light is also thrown on Peter's career, his family and friendships, and his struggles with age and death.

Professor Clarence Taylor sheds some much-needed light on the rich intellectual and political tradition that lies in the black religious community. From the Pentecostalism of Bishop Smallwood Williams and the flamboyant leadership of the Reverend Al Sharpton, to the radical Presbyterianism of Milton Arthur Galamison and the controversial and mass-mobilization by Minister Louis Farrakhan, black religious leaders have figured prominently in the struggle for social equality in America.

Review A Critical Biography of Lady Jane Wilde 1821?-1896, Irish Revolutionist, Humanist, Scholar and Poet (Women's Studies (Lewiston, N.Y.), V. 34.) / Edwin Mellen Press:

The focus of this study is upon a progressive woman whose broad erudition allowed her to write on a great variety of subjects. Her own life as a revolutionist and writer, and her writings about women should interest those in women's studies. As an Irish nationalist in a movement that had considerable influence on subsequent nationalist leaders like Arthur Griffin, her views in her revolutionary poems and articles are still pertinent.

Review Feliks Dzierzynski and the SDKPIL / East European Monographs:

This book is about Feliks Dzierzynski and a political party that was molded in his image-the Social Democracy of the Kingdom of Poland and Lithuania. It focusses on the role played by Dzierzynski in the history of Polish communism rather than on the important role played by him in the development of Russian communism. As such it is also the first work of Western scholarship on Dzierzynskin, the man known primarily as the ruthless director of the secret polices in the first decade of Soviet rule in Russia.
