Review Eleanor of Castile: Queen and Society in Thirteenth-Century England / Palgrave Macmillan:

Medievalist feminist studies' early concentration on the lives of prominent women has more recently given way to an interest in their less exalted sisters. Historians have seemingly avoided the careers of medieval queens, creatures of romance and legend, women who enjoyed rank and wealth merely as a consequence of birth or marriage. A renewed interest in such women has, however, followed the opening of new avenues to the study of women and power in the Middle Ages. That the lives of these women will reward reconsideration has been amply proven in the works of such historians as Pauline Stafford and Janet Nelson. Eleanor of Castile studies the wife of Edward I of England, a woman eulogized since the sixteenth century as a model of virtuous womanhood and queenly excellence, who overcame the impediment of her foreign birth to win all English hearts. This book shows that Eleanor's contemporaries in fact had a disquietingly different opinion of her, and develops as a central theme the formation of that opinion as her behavior was observed by her subjects. The book thus becomes a study in the construction of one woman's imagery of power and her society's perception of that imagery. The evolution of the queen's posthumous legend is considered as well, as her reputation was fashioned and refashioned in response to changing opinions on women and power and about the medieval period itself.

Review Josephus and History of the Greco-Roman Period: Essays in Memory of Morton Smith (Studia Post-Biblica) / Brill Academic Pub:

This collection of essays covers the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus and the history of the Second Temple period. The contributions are revised versions of papers delivered at an international colloquium in memory of Professor Morton Smith, which was held at San Miniato, Italy, in November 1992. The essays cover a broad range of historical and historiographical issues concerning the Seleucid, Hasmonean, Herodian and Roman periods, for which the importance of Josephus can hardly be overestimated. Josephus's trustworthiness as a historian is investigated from various angles. Light is thrown on philological, literary, geographical, archaeological, sociological and religious questions. The book includes a critical evaluation of Morton Smith's scholarly achievement.

Review The Bruen Loop: The Jimmy Bruen Story / Irish American Book Company:

Jimmy Bruen became an internationally known golfer when still a schoolboy. He was once described by Henry Cotton as the best golfer - professional or amateur - in the world. To lead the British and Irish Walker Cup team as a teenager was quite unique. But by then the "Hibernian Wonder Golfer" had already won his first Irish Close Championship. He went on to win the British Amateur Championship in 1946. There were, of course, thousands of witnesses but only the golf scribes recorded the facts. They painted the scenes and put their words in print. Two dedicated people - Jimmy Bruen's father and later, Nell, his wife - collected the cuttings, photographs, letters, wires, score cards and even championship badges, and put them all in a large scrapbook. It was with the aid of this scrapbook, as well as his other golfers' personal memories, that George Crosbie was able to compile the Jimmy Bruen story.
