Review Lives of the Literati (Thoemmes Press - Scottish Thought and Culture, 1750-1850) / Thoemmes Continuum:

At the heart of the Scottish Thought lay a few dozen literary and scientific figures who distinguished themselves in fields as diverse as medicine, belles-lettres, poetry, drama, philosophy, religion, political economy, and history. Some of the best biographies of these literati were published in the nineteenth century, often by personal friends who were prominent men of letters in their own right. This set collects together seven of the most important of those biographical accounts. Each title is extremely rare today, and most have never before been reprinted. Each includes a new introduction, specially commissioned for the series.

Review The Ageless Warrior: The Life of Boxing Legend Archie Moore / Sports Publishing LLC:

This beautiful, limited-edition volume is hand-numbered and autographed by boxing legends Archie Moore and Jake "Raging Bull" LaMotta. Certificate of Authenticity included, only 125 copies printed! There was only one man who fought both Rocky Marciano and Muhammad Ali. There was only one man who recorded 141 professional Knock-Outs. There was only one man who trained both a young Ali and heavyweight champion George Forman. There was only one Archie Moore. With a seven-decade boxing career, including 27 years as a prize fighter, Moore's vast career and exploits are finally chronicled in The Ageless Warrior. Author Mike Fitzgerald spent months with Moore before the boxer's death in an effort to capture the full life story of one of the 20th Century's most colorful and accomplished athletes. And what a story it was. Moore's opponent list reads like a "who's who" of boxing; he fought nine world champions and seven Hall-of-Famers.

Review The Collected Speeches of Margaret Thatcher / HarperCollins Publishers Ltd:

By the time she stepped down in 1990, Margaret Thatcher had become one of her generation's outstanding political leaders, and perhaps the most powerful woman in the world. Possessing an iron will, she matched words with action in confronting the crises of the day in economic affairs, in the Falklands War, in Northern Ireland, in the great twilight struggle of the Cold War and finally in Europe. Under her leadership, Britain broke out of its decline and self-doubt to emerge once more as a major player on the international stage. Margaret Thatcher put intense effort into her major speeches. As a result, they are uniquely revealing of how she developed that clear vision which would transform Britain and help shape international politics in the late 20th century. They begin with the speeches she made as part of her campaign to mold the ideas of the Conservative Party in Opposition. They continue with the famous addresses in which she expressed her convictions as prime minister and include recent lectures in which she gives her current, and controversial, thoughts about the world today. This book of speeches is an essential companion volume to the two books of Margaret Thatcher's memoirs, as well as a masterly study of one of the great political figures of our time.

Review Lives of Illustrious and Distinguished Irishmen (Biographical Dictionaries) / Ganesha Publishing:

This is an authoritative and easy-to-use biographical dictionary covering over nineteen centuries of Irish lives. From Ollamh Fodhla, six hundred years bc, through Jonathan Swift up until the mid-Victorian era with the death of Whitley Stokes in 1845, this important reference work was first published in 1839-47. Ireland has always had a very personal history and its heroes appear in every field of human endeavour including philosophers, theologians, historians, statesmen, physicians, writers, and scientists; names include St Patrick, Niall of the Nine Hostages, Brendan, Edmund Spenser, James Butler, James Usher, Jeremy Taylor, Jonathan Swift, George Berkeley, Robert Boyle, Sir Richard Steele, Sir Hans Sloane, Edmund Burke, Henry Grattan, John Philpot Curran, Thomas Percy, Richard Brinsley Sheridan, Elizabeth Hamilton, Mary Tighe, George Canning, and Oliver Goldsmith. Five hundred and thirteen biographies are printed using a wide range of source materials, making this the most comprehensive and extensive biographical history of Ireland attempted. The text is arranged into six historical periods, each with a historical introduction. Within each period, the lives are presented chronologically within three disciplines - literary, political and ecclesiastical. In addition, the volumes are illustrated with a selection of portraits and views. This detailed sourcebook is an invaluable biographical reference tool for libraries and students in all disciplines.

Review The Writings and Speeches of Oliver Cromwell: With an Introduction, Notes and an Account of His Life Volume III The Protectorate 1653-1655 / Oxford University Press, USA:

This third volume on Oliver Cromwell covers the years 1653 to 1655, and traces Cromwell's emergence as the ruler of his country, and as an international statesman. In December 1653, after the collapse of Barebone's parliament, a short-lived experiment in radical Puritan rule, Cromwell became Lord Protector under a new constitution designed by the army, the Instrument of the Government. The volume traces the failure of Cromwell's attempt to win assent for that constitution from the parliament of 1654, and describes the royalist plotting which led to the rising under Colonel Pe nruddock in March 1655. The insurrection prompted Cromwell to entrust the government of the regions to his Major-Generals, in whose rule the military character of the Protectorate was at its most obvious. Abroad, a series of hard-won treaties, with France and with Protestant powers, paved the way for the war with Spain which began in the autumn of 1655. The volume ends at a point when Cromwell perhaps enjoyed greatest power, but the least support.

Review His Natural Life (The Academy Editions of Australian Literature) / Univ of Queensland Pr:

One of the greatest 19th-century Australian novels and the grand epic of the transportation system, this novel charts the misfortune of Richard Divine, falsely accused of murder, through the worst Australian penal settlements, while retaining his humanity and spiritual dignity. So powerful is Clarke's representation of the brutality of transportation that more than a century later historians still struggle to disentangle fact from tragic fiction.
