Review Carbonate Reservoir Characterization: A Geologic-Engineering Analysis, Part II (Developments in Petroleum Science) / Elsevier Science:

This second volume on carbonate reservoirs completes the two-volume treatise on this important topic for petroleum engineers and geologists. Together, the volumes form a complete, modern reference to the properties and production behaviour of carbonate petroleum reservoirs. The book contains valuable glossaries to geologic and petroleum engineering terms providing exact definitions for writers and speakers. Lecturers will find a useful appendix devoted to questions and problems that can be used for teaching assignments as well as a guide for lecture development. In addition, there is a chapter devoted to core analysis of carbonate rocks which is ideal for laboratory instruction. Managers and production engineers will find a review of the latest laboratory technology for carbonate formation evaluation in the chapter on core analysis. The modern classification of carbonate rocks is presented with petroleum production performance and overall characterization using seismic and well test analyses. Separate chapters are devoted to the important naturally fractured and chalk reservoirs. Throughout the book, the emphasis is on formation evaluation and performance. This two-volume work brings together the wide variety of approaches to the study of carbonate reservoirs and will therefore be of value to managers, engineers, geologists and lecturers.

Review Foundations of the American Economy: The American Colonies from Inception to Independence (Early American Economic Thought) / Pickering & Chatto Publishers:

This collection brings together a comprehensive selection of documents from the history of US and Canadian economic thought from the 17th century through to 1900. Part I covers the early colonial period. The earliest American economic writings highlight the struggles over and transformation from a theocratic to a secular materialist commercial society. Correspondingly, writings relate to the establishment and transformation of the legal foundations and framework of the new economic order. Clearly related to these themes were writings showing conflicts over individualism, democracy, and the structure of political and economic power amongst the colonists and between the colonists and Great Britain. Writings address important, controversial and technical problems of colonial money, credit, and debt, including the chronic currency shortages suffered by the colonists. The last two volumes relate the colonial perspective of mercantilism, British colonial policy, and free trade.

Review Income Distribution (The International Library of Critical Writings in Economics series) / Edward Elgar Publishing:

With increasing interest in the distribution of income generated by movements towards more inequality, this three volume set presents an essential collection of previously published articles by leading scholars, which provide a key to understanding this important and controversial area. Volume I considers the problems of measurement and description and explores theories explaining the shape of distribution; it investigates explanations of the upper tail in terms of hierarchies and organizations and presents research on the dynamics of incomes. Volume II considers the determinants of an individual's income on the one hand and analyzes the factors influencing the entire distribution on the other. Non-labor income and policies that influence distribution are discussed in volume III. This collection will be of great interest to economists, statisticians and policymakers concerned with understanding the complex determinants of income distribution and inequality in our societies.

Review Sir James Steuart's Principles of Political Economy / Pickering & Chatto Publishers:

The Scottish political economist Sir James Steuart (1713-1780) completed the first two books of the "Principles" while living in Tubingen in 1759. One of the most important features of Steuart's career was his extensive knowledge of the Continent. The Foreign Tour (1735-40) and exile as a result of his association with the Jacobites (1745-63) meant that by the end of the Seven Years' War, Sir James had spent almost half of his life abroad; facts which help to explain the Eurocentric nature of his work. Many of his experiences found their way into the main body of the "Principles" in which he noted, for example, the economic consequences of the Seven Years' War in Germany, the state of agriculture in Picardy, and the problem of depopulation in the cities of the Austrian Netherlands. Nearly eight years separate the first and last books of the "Principles", in which Steuart attempted to produce a single great conceptual system, linking the most interesting branches of modern policy, such as population, agriculture, trade, industry, money, coin, interest, circulation, banks, exchange, public credit, and taxes.

Review Herbert Simon (Critical Evaluations in Business and Management) / Routledge:

Herbert Simon (1916–2001) was a polymathic intellectual. A founding figure of the field of artificial intelligence, he gained renown in the 1950s (with Allen Newell) as the creator of the first ‘thinking machine’. Simon was also a central figure during the cognitive revolution in psychology in the 1960s as scientists began to use computer models to study the thought processes of humans. His desire to understand decision-making led him to develop his economic theory of ‘bounded rationality’ (he also coined the term ‘satisficing’) and in 1978 he won the Nobel Prize in Economics for his pioneering research. With a new introduction and an extensive bibliography, this three-volume Routledge Major Work is an invaluable research resource.
