Review Paul A. Samuelson: Critical Assessments of Contemporary Economists: Second Series / Routledge:More than any other economist, Paul Anthony Samuelson (1915-) raised the level of mathematical analysis in the profession. Very much 'the economists' economist', Samuelson published rigorous statements of fundamental concepts and theories in just about every branch of economics, including international trade, consumer theory and welfare economics, production theory, financial analysis, growth theory, macroeconomics, and the history of economic thought. Samuelson is a key figure in economic thinking and there are few graduate students of economics who have not read and re-read his classical essays. This collection gathers the essential assessments of this important economist, and provides an unparalleled insight into his lasting impact on economics throughout the last century to the present day.

Review Miniset D. Economic Theory & Econometrics (Routledge Library Editions: The Economics) / Routledge:Building from the micro-foundations of economic behaviour to a full survey of macroeconomics, this title examines growth theory and equilibrium and disequilibrium approaches to provide a comprehensive survey of all the rival theoretical approaches that underlie central policy debates. A survey of pre-Keynesian theories of growth, fluctuations and the various short and long cycles and crises is followed by an exposition of Keynesian theory and its subsequent development and of the neo-classical revival. The topics covered include: non-clearing markets; involuntary unemployment; and persistent inflation. As well as full coverage of the English-language literature, this book covers important contributions from the new school of French macroeconomists, including Malinvaud, Benassy and Grandmont.

Review The Economic Development of Southeast Asia (Elgar Mini Series) / Edward Elgar Publishing:This four-volume collection brings together key analytical contributions on the economies of Southeast Asia, countries which together have a population of more than 500 million people. This group of economies is of interest for a number of reasons. Firstly, they feature great diversity - Singapore has one of the highest per capita incomes in the world, while several of the mainland Southeast Asian states are among the poorest. Brunei is a tiny oil sultanate, while Indonesia is the world's fourth largest nation. In addition, several of these economies have been consistently among the world's most open, while others are emerging from a long period of international commercial isolation. Thirdly, the group includes one sizeable country, the Philippines, which for reasons still only poorly understood has consistently under-performed compared to its potential. Four of the economies - Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand -grew extremely quickly in the three decades prior to the recent Asian economic crisis. Lastly, the Asian economic crisis of 1997-8 particularly affected three of the countries - Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. The factors explaining this sudden, and largely unanticipated, event are still only poorly understood.

Review Islam and Globalization: Critical Concepts in Islamic Studies / Routledge:Globalization has opened up non-Western societies to forces of economic, political and cultural liberalism for the first time, and this process has had a profound effect upon Islamic societies, causing unease and concern among many Muslims. The conflict between Islam and globalization and the West is perhaps the most pressing issue in the post-September 11th era, and the articles reprinted in this set represent the shape of international relations-conciliatory and otherwise-between the two civilizations in the late-twentieth and twenty-first centuries. With a general introduction by the editor, the volumes include articles by leading scholars that initially examine the various ways in which Islam has tried to protect itself against the encroachment of the West, before investigating a more outward-looking Islam that encourages religious reformism and evolution in order to contend with the new challenges and priorities of a global community.

Review Poverty and the Poor Law: 6 Volume Set: A Palgrave Macmillan Archive Collection (Palgrave macmillan archive collection) / Palgrave Macmillan:Nineteenth-century Britain offers the social and economic historian extreme examples of industrial expansion and wealth alongside wretched working conditions in the fast-growing manufacturing towns, unsanitary living conditions and the expectation that the lot of many would be pauperism and ill health from childhood to old age. At a time of European revolutions, the imperative for action was more than a question of the liberal conscience. In this collection, contemporary, real-life description is given in the context of competing views of philanthropists, manufacturers, politicians and social activists of nineteenth-century Britain. The workings of the Poor Law, the vigorous debate about the reliance on charitable, voluntary action as opposed to state provision, and ideas for reform including pensions, self-help societies, education, and public health measures foreshadow the reforms of the following century and tentative steps toward a welfare state.
