Review The International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Health Related Problems: ICD-10, Three Volume Set (Nonserial Publications) / World Health Organization:

This new edition of WHO's International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10) has been fully updated for the second time. Originally published in the early 1990s, ICD-10 now incorporates all edits and updates since 1996 up to the end of 2008. In addition, the numbering system has changed and now clearly indicates the year that the updates were incorporated. In 2000, WHO formed an international panel to review and collate all adjustments to the ICD-10 proposed by many institutions around the world. Panel members consult several times a year and this definitive 2008 edition of ICD-10 is the result of their work. Fifteen years of daily international use of the classification have resulted in many improvements, and these have been incorporated into Volume 1: the index, rules and guidelines. As a result, the classification is now easier to use and implement, accomodates new scientific knowledge, makes it easier to understand health statistics and improves comparability of international mortality statistics. The thousands of changes that have been introduced are based on about 400 recommendations for Volume 1, 90 recommendations for Volume 2, and more than 700 recommendations for Volume 3. They are the product of a continuous international collaboration. The ICD is the international standard diagnostic classification for all general epidemiological purposes, many health management purposes and clinical use. [+]
These include analysis of the general health situation of population groups and monitoring the incidence and prevalence of diseases, as well as other health problems with respect to variables such as the characteristics and circumstances of the individuals affected, reimbursement, case-mix, resource allocation, quality, patient safety, and guidelines. ICD is used for health information purposes in public health, primary, secondary and tertiary care settings. In particular, it is used to classify diseases, accidents, reasons for encounter, and other health problems recorded on many types of health and vital records including death certificates and health records. In addition to facilitating the storage and retrieval of diagnostic information for clinical, epidemiological and quality purposes, the resulting records form the basis for compiling national mortality and morbidity statistics by WHO Member States. ICD serves a language-independent framework for classification of diseases and has been translated into more than 40 languages. Included in this set:Volume 1: Tabular List, 1200 ppVolume 2: Instruction Manual, 190 ppVolume 3, Alphabetical Index, 900 pp.

Review Chapman & Hall/CRC / Dictionary of Steroids Creator: G.M. Murphy
Edition: 1st

List Price: $1,699.00

Review Dictionary of Steroids / Chapman & Hall/CRC:

Steroids are a significant class of compound which occupy a central role in science today. Their wide range of biological activity has led to a large number of steroids finding clinical use as anticancer drugs, anti-inflammatory agents, contraceptives, diuretics and cardioactive agents. This reference is a compilation of chemical, structural and bibliographic data on the most interesting and important steroids known. It should prove useful to chemists working in this field. Bound in two volumes, this dictionary presents physical and chemical data, biological source and medicinal uses of over 15,000 steroids in 6,500 entries. Documentation is comprehensive for natural steroids (human, plant and animal), for example bile acids, sterols and steroidal alkaloids. Coverage is given of synthetic and semi-synthetic steroids including those of medicinal interest and those used as starting materials in synthesis. Every entry is given its systematic name and a trivial name where appropriate. Bibliographic data for each entry has been labelled to indicate content. The current literature has been reviewed until September 1990 and while a small proportion of entries have come from the "Dictionary of Organic Compounds" these have been enlarged and updated; the majority are new with coverage of natural products. [+]
The indexes, which are bound in a separate volume for convenience, include Name, Molecular Formula, Type of Compound, CAS Registry Number and species. In the Type of Compound Index entries are arranged according to steroid ring structure or biological activity (for example pregnanes and andostranes) thus allowing steroids of a particular type to be easily found and compared. The Species index allows rapid access to the data using the botanical or zoological name. This book should be a useful reference source for steroid biochemists, natural product chemists, bile acid researchers, and medicinal and pharmaceutical chemists.

Review Elsevier's Dictionary of Medicine and Biology: in English, Greek, German, Italian and Latin / Elsevier Science:

Dictionaries are didactic books used as consultation instruments for self-teaching. They are composed by an ordered set of linguistic units which reflects a double structure, the macrostructure which correspond to the word list and the microstructure that refers to the contents of each lemma. The great value of dictionaries nests in the fact that they establish a standard nomenclature and prevent in that way the appearance of new useless synonyms. This dictionary contains a total of about 27. 500 main English entries, and over of 130. 000 translations that should normally sufficiently cover all fields of life sciences. The basic criteria used to accept a word a part of the dictionary during the development period in order of importance were usage, up-to-dateness, specificity, simplicity and conceptual relationships. The dictionary meets the standards of higher education and covers all main fields of life sciences by setting its primary focus on the vastly developing fields of cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, developmental biology, microbiology, genetics and also the fields of human anatomy, histology, pathology, physiology, zoology and botany. The fields of ecology, paleontology, systematics, evolution, biostatistics, plant physiology, plant anatomy, plant histology, biometry and lab techniques have been sufficiently covered but in a more general manner. The latest Latin international anatomical terminology "Terminologia Anatomica" or "TA" has been fully incorporated and all anatomical entries have been given their international Latin TA synonym. [+]
This dictionary will be a valuable and helpful tool for all scientists, teachers, students and generally all those that work within the fields of life sciences.

Review Encyclopedia of Medical Decision Making: Two-Volume Set / Sage Publications, Inc:

Decision making is a critical element in the field of medicine that can lead to life-or-death outcomes, yet it is an element fraught with complex and conflicting variables, diagnostic and therapeutic uncertainties, patient preferences and values, and costs. Together, decisions made by physicians, patients, insurers, and policymakers determine the quality of health care, quality that depends inherently on counterbalancing risks and benefits and competing objectives such as maximizing life expectancy versus optimizing quality of life or quality of care versus economic realities. Broadly speaking, concepts in medical decision making (MDM) may be divided into two major categories: prescriptive and descriptive. Work in the area of prescriptive MDM investigates how medical decisions should be done using complicated analyses and algorithms to determine cost-effectiveness measures, prediction methods, and so on. In contrast, descriptive MDM studies how decisions actually are made involving human judgment, biases, social influences, patient factors, and so on. The Encyclopedia of Medical Decision Making gives a gentle introduction to both categories, revealing how medical and healthcare decisions are actually made-and constrained-and how physician, healthcare management, and patient decision making can be improved to optimize health outcomes. Key FeaturesDiscusses very general issues that span many aspects of MDM, including bioethics; health policy and economics; disaster simulation modeling; medical informatics; the psychology of decision making; shared and team medical decision making; social, moral, and religious factors; end-of-life decision making; assessing patient preference and patient adherence; and moreIncorporates both quantity and quality of life in optimizing a medical decisionConsiders characteristics of the decisionmaker and how those characteristics influence their decisionsPresents outcome measures to judge the quality or impact of a medical decisionExamines some of the more commonly encountered biostatistical methods used in prescriptive decision makingProvides utility assessment techniques that facilitate quantitative medical decision makingAddresses the many different assumption perspectives the decision maker might choose from when trying to optimize a decisionOffers mechanisms for defining MDM algorithmsWith comprehensive and authoritative coverage by experts in the fields of medicine, decision science and cognitive psychology, and healthcare management, this two-volume Encyclopedia is a must-have resource for any academic library.
