Review Springer / Foundations of Dependable Computing: Paradigms for Dependable Applications (The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science) Creator: Clifford G. Lau
Edition: 1
Publication date: 1994-09-30
Dewey code: 005.1

Price: $130.00

Review Foundations of Dependable Computing: Paradigms for Dependable Applications (The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science) / Springer:

Foundations of Dependable Computing: Paradigms for Dependable Applications, presents a variety of specific approaches to achieving dependability at the application level. Driven by the higher level fault models of Models and Frameworks for Dependable Systems, and built on the lower level abstractions implemented in a third companion book subtitled System Implementation, these approaches demonstrate how dependability may be tuned to the requirements of an application, the fault environment, and the characteristics of the target platform. Three classes of paradigms are considered: protocol-based paradigms for distributed applications, algorithm-based paradigms for parallel applications, and approaches to exploiting application semantics in embedded real-time control systems. The companion volume subtitled Models and Frameworks for Dependable Systems presents two comprehensive frameworks for reasoning about system dependability, thereby establishing a context for understanding the roles played by specific approaches presented in this book's two companion volumes. It then explores the range of models and analysis methods necessary to design, validate and analyze dependable systems. Another companion book (published by Kluwer) subtitled System Implementation, explores the system infrastructure needed to support the various paradigms of Paradigms for Dependable Applications. Approaches to implementing support mechanisms and to incorporating additional appropriate levels of fault detection and fault tolerance at the processor, network, and operating system level are presented. A primary concern at these levels is balancing cost and performance against coverage and overall dependability. As these chapters demonstrate, low overhead, practical solutions are attainable and not necessarily incompatible with performance considerations. The section on innovative compiler support, in particular, demonstrates how the benefits of application specificity may be obtained while reducing hardware cost and run-time overhead.

Review Terrorism Informatics: Knowledge Management and Data Mining for Homeland Security (Integrated Series in Information Systems) (Integrated Series in Information Systems) / Springer:

Terrorism informatics has been defined as the application of advanced methodologies, information fusion and analysis techniques to acquire, integrate process, analyze, and manage the diversity of terrorism-related information for international and homeland security-related applications. The wide variety of methods used in terrorism informatics are derived from Computer Science, Informatics, Statistics, Mathematics, Linguistics, Social Sciences, and Public Policy and these methods are involved in the collection of huge amounts of information from varied and multiple sources and of many types in numerous languages. Information fusion and information technology analysis techniques which include data mining, data integration, language translation technologies, and image and video processing play central roles in the prevention, detection, and remediation of terrorism. While there has been substantial investment on computer technology research applications to terrorism, much of the results and the literature has been a fragmented hodgepodge that is too narrowly focused on unconnected and unlinked discipline domains. As a result, there has been little effort to relate the research across the discipline domains from which terrorism informatics is drawn.   TERROR INFORMATICS: Knowledge Management and Data Mining for Homeland Security will provide an interdisciplinary and comprehensive survey of the state-of-the-art of terrorism informatics domain along three basic dimensions: methodological issues in terrorism research; information infusion techniques to support terrorism prevention, detection, and response; and legal, social, privacy, and data confidentiality challenges and approaches. The book will bring "knowledge" that can be used by scientists, security professionals, counterterrorism experts, and policy makers.   The book will be organized into three major subject areas: Part I will focus on the methodological issues in terrorism research. The methodological issues that impact trends, achievements, root causes, and failures in terrorism research will be treated within the context of the methods of retrieving and developing, sharing, and implementing terrorism informatics methodologies and resources. Part II will focus on three major areas of terrorism research: prevention, detection, and established governmental responses to terrorism. [+]
This section will systematically examine the current and ongoing research including recent case studies and application of terrorism informatics techniques. Examples of such techniques are web mining, social network analysis, and multimodal event extraction, analysis to the terrorism phenomenon, etc. Part III will present the critical and relevant social/technical areas to terrorism research including social, privacy, data confidentiality, and legal challenges.

Review A Bibliographic Guide to the History of Computing, Computers, and the Information Processing Industry (Bibliographies and Indexes in Science and Technology) / Greenwood Press:

As millions of people have been exposed to computing through the tremendous growth of microcomputers, there has developed an increasing appreciation of the history of data processing, which dates back many decades before the arrival of the computer. Stretching back to at least the 1860s, such early technologies as adding machines, punch cards, and the office appliance industry are now being recognized for their place in the history of the information processing industry. This work brings together a comprehensive list of sources that offer a general introduction to the literature of the industry. Divided into nine chapters covering topics and historical periods, the bibliography provides an annotated list of published materials describing both the history of the industry and significant items of general interest. Each chapter is introduced with a short review of historically important issues and comments on the literature, and contains contemporary publications as well as more recent material. To give the work a continuing usefulness, ongoing publications, such as computer magazines, are highlighted. Entries are grouped under nearly 100 subheadings, covering such material as contemporary descriptions of hardware and software of the past, seminal technical papers, industry surveys, programming languages, significant individuals and companies, and the role of Japan and microcomputing. All citations are annotated with a brief summary of either the work's contents or its historical importance, while two indexes provide both subject references and author citations. This bibliography will be an important reference source for courses in the history of data processing and business history, and a useful addition to public, college, and university libraries.

Review Logics for Databases and Information Systems (The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science) / Springer:

The designers and users of present-day information systems deal with more and more complex applications that have to meet stringent quality requirements. In this context, logic offers a wide variety of formalisms that can be applied to the specification, analysis, and prototype implementation of information systems. Such formalisms, e. g. , temporal logic, provide a sound semantic basis for further extensions and for the development of practical database languages. Logics for Databases and Information Systems addresses novel applications of logical frameworks to the problems of database integrity and dynamics, handling time and change, concurrency, incomplete information, data modeling, and property inheritance. Each topic is discussed by leading researchers in the field. Logics for Databases and Information Systems is suitable as a secondary text for a graduate level course on Databases and Information Systems, and as a reference for researchers and practitioners in industry.

Review Springer / Principles of Distributed Systems Edition: 1
Publication date: 1995-12-31
Dewey code: 005.2
List Price: $175.00
Price: $169.65

Review Principles of Distributed Systems / Springer:

Distributed computer systems are now widely available but, despite a number of recent advances, the design of software for these systems remains a challenging task, involving two main difficulties: the absence of a shared clock and the absence of a shared memory. The absence of a shared clock means that the concept of time is not useful in distributed systems. The absence of shared memory implies that the concept of a state of a distributed system also needs to be redefined. These two important concepts occupy a major portion of this book. Principles of Distributed Systems describes tools and techniques that have been successfully applied to tackle the problem of global time and state in distributed systems. The author demonstrates that the concept of time can be replaced by that of causality, and clocks can be constructed to provide causality information. The problem of not having a global state is alleviated by developing efficient algorithms for detecting properties and computing global functions. The author's major emphasis is in developing general mechanisms that can be applied to a variety of problems. For example, instead of discussing algorithms for standard problems, such as termination detection and deadlocks, the book discusses algorithms to detect general properties of a distributed computation. Also included are several worked examples and exercise problems that can be used for individual practice and classroom instruction. [+]
Audience: Can be used to teach a one-semester graduate course on distributed systems. Also an invaluable reference book for researchers and practitioners working on the many different aspects of distributed systems.

Review Visual and Spatial Analysis: Advances in Data Mining, Reasoning, and Problem Solving / Springer:

Advanced visual analysis and problem solving has been conducted successfully for millennia. The Pythagorean Theorem was proven using visual means more than 2000 years ago. In the 19th century, John Snow stopped a cholera epidemic in London by proposing that a specific water pump be shut down. He discovered that pump by visually correlating data on a city map. The goal of this book is to present the current trends in visual and spatial analysis for data mining, reasoning, problem solving and decision-making. This is the first book to focus on visual decision making and problem solving in general with specific applications in the geospatial domain ? combining theory with real-world practice. The book is unique in its integration of modern symbolic and visual approaches to decision making and problem solving. As such, it ties together much of the monograph and textbook literature in these emerging areas. This book contains 21 chapters that have been grouped into five parts: (1) visual problem solving and decision making, (2) visual and heterogeneous reasoning, (3) visual correlation, (4) visual and spatial data mining, and (5) visual and spatial problem solving in geospatial domains. Each chapter ends with a summary and exercises. [+]
The book is intended for professionals and graduate students in computer science, applied mathematics, imaging science and Geospatial Information Systems (GIS). In addition to being a state-of-the-art research compilation, this book can be used a text for advanced courses on the subjects such as modeling, computer graphics, visualization, image processing, data mining, GIS, and algorithm analysis.
