Review Deductive Program Design / Springer:

This volume presents some of the most advanced research in the description of distributed systems and the design calculi of software and of hardware using functional, algebraic, logical, and programming calculi. The deductive treatment of distributed systems is presented in its complete spectrum from formal foundations and functional system specifications to assertion calculi for the verification of system programs. A highlight is the use of model checking techniques for proving properties about finite state automaton systems with extremely large state sets. It is also shown how the formalisms can be used to treat hardware systems, with emphasis on development steps leading from high-level abstractions to concrete representations. An important notion treated is that of refinement concepts in system development.

Review Issues of Fault Diagnosis for Dynamic Systems / Springer:

There is an increasing demand for dynamic systems to become safer, more reliable and more economical in operation. This requirement extends beyond the normally accepted safety-critical systems e. g. , nuclear reactors, aircraft and many chemical processes, to systems such as autonomous vehicles and some process control systems where the system availability is vital. The field of fault diagnosis for dynamic systems (including fault detection and isolation) has become an important topic of research. Many applications of qualitative and quantitative modelling, statistical processing and neural networks are now being planned and developed in complex engineering systems. Issues of Fault Diagnosis for Dynamic Systems has been prepared by experts in fault detection and isolation (FDI) and fault diagnosis with wide ranging experience. Subjects featured include: - Real plant application studies; - Non-linear observer methods; - Robust approaches to FDI; - The use of parity equations; - Statistical process monitoring; - Qualitative modelling for diagnosis; - Parameter estimation approaches to FDI; - Fault diagnosis for descriptor systems; - FDI in inertial navigation; - Stuctured approaches to FDI; - Change detection methods; - Bio-medical studies. Researchers and industrial experts will appreciate the combination of practical issues and mathematical theory with many examples. Control engineers will profit from the application studies.

Review Applied Parallel And Distributed Computing Advances In Computation: Theory And Practice / Nova Science Publishers:

In the not too distant future, every researcher and professional in science and engineering fields will have to understand parallel and distributed computing. With hyperthreading in Intel processors, hypertransport links in AMD processors, multi-core silicon in today's high-end microprocessors from IBM and emerging cluster and grid computing, parallel and distributed computers have moved into the mainstream of computing. To fully exploit these advances in computer architectures, researchers and professionals must start to design parallel or distributed software, systems and algorithms for their scientific and engineering applications. Parallel and distributed scientific and engineering computing has become a key technology, which will play an important part in determining, or at least shaping, future research and development activities in many academic and industrial branches. This book reports on the recent important advances in the area of parallel and distributed computing for science and engineering applications. Included in the book are selected papers from prestigious workshops such as PACT-SHPSEC, IPDPS-PDSECA, and ICPP-HPSECA, together with some invited papers from prominent researchers around the world. The book is divided into five main sections. These chapters not only provide novel ideas, new experimental results and handful experience in this field, but also stimulate the future research activities in the area of parallel and distributed computing for science and engineering applications.

Review Data Mining in E-learning (Advances in Management Information) / WIT Press (UK):

The development of e-learning systems, particularly web-based education systems, has increased exponentially in recent years. In the last years, researchers have begun to investigate various data mining methods to help teachers improve e-learning systems. These methods allow them to discover new knowledge based on students’ usage data. Following this line, one of the most promising areas is the application of knowledge extraction. As one of the first of its kind, this book presents an introduction to e-learning systems, data mining concepts and the interaction between both areas. It consists of both openly solicited and invited chapters, written by international researchers and leading experts on the application of data mining techniques in e-learning systems. The main purpose of this book is to show the current state of this research area. It includes an introduction to e-learning systems, data mining and the interaction between areas, as well as several case studies and experiences of applying data mining techniques in e-learning systems.

Review A Parallel Algorithm Synthesis Procedure for High-Performance Computer Architecture / Springer:

Despite five decades of research, parallel computing remains an exotic, frontier technology on the fringes of mainstream computing. Its much-heralded triumph over sequential computing has yet to materialize. This is in spite of the fact that the processing needs of many signal processing applications continue to eclipse the capabilities of sequential computing. The culprit is largely the software development environment. Fundamental shortcomings in the development environment of many parallel computer architectures thwart the adoption of parallel computing. Foremost, parallel computing has no unifying model to accurately predict the execution time of algorithms on parallel architectures. Cost and scarce programming resources prohibit deploying multiple algorithms and partitioning strategies in an attempt to find the fastest solution. As a consequence, algorithm design is largely an intuitive art form dominated by practitioners who specialize in a particular computer architecture. This, coupled with the fact that parallel computer architectures rarely last more than a couple of years, makes for a complex and challenging design environment. To navigate this environment, algorithm designers need a road map, a detailed procedure they can use to efficiently develop high performance, portable parallel algorithms. [+]
The focus of this book is to draw such a road map. The Parallel Algorithm Synthesis Procedure can be used to design reusable building blocks of adaptable, scalable software modules from which high performance signal processing applications can be constructed. The hallmark of the procedure is a semi-systematic process for introducing parameters to control the partitioning and scheduling of computation and communication. This facilitates the tailoring of software modules to exploit different configurations of multiple processors, multiple floating-point units, and hierarchical memories. To showcase the efficacy of this procedure, the book presents three case studies requiring various degrees of optimization for parallel execution. This book can be used as a reference for algorithm designers or as a text for an advanced course on parallel programming.
