Review Soft Computing and Intelligent Data Analysis in Oil Exploration, Volume 51 (Developments in Petroleum Science) / Elsevier Science:

This comprehensive book highlights soft computing and geostatistics applications in hydrocarbon exploration and production, combining practical and theoretical aspects. It spans a wide spectrum of applications in the oil industry, crossing many discipline boundaries such as geophysics, geology, petrophysics and reservoir engineering. It is complemented by several tutorial chapters on fuzzy logic, neural networks and genetic algorithms and geostatistics to introduce these concepts to the uninitiated. The application areas include prediction of reservoir properties (porosity, sand thickness, lithology, fluid), seismic processing, seismic and bio stratigraphy, time lapse seismic and core analysis. There is a good balance between introducing soft computing and geostatistics methodologies that are not routinely used in the petroleum industry and various applications areas. The book can be used by many practitioners such as processing geophysicists, seismic interpreters, geologists, reservoir engineers, petrophysicist, geostatistians, asset mangers and technology application professionals. It will also be of interest to academics to assess the importance of, and contribute to, R&D efforts in relevant areas.

Review Databases and On-line Data in Astronomy (Astrophysics and Space Science Library) / Springer:

Data archiving has, for many years, been the most disregarded aspect of all data systems. The increase in numbers of telescopes, both groundbased and space-borne, and the increase in efficiency of detectors have generated overwhelming amounts of data. Much of these data were and are not used on short timescales and (should) have been archived, where they can be used later and/or by others. Archiving is essential. Objects can change in the course of time. New technological or scientific developments might require observing objects again. The cost-benefit ratio will become more and more important when considering the allocation of telescope time. The retrieval of `old' data can then be crucial. At present there are a number of data collections and data retrieval systems. This book includes a series of clear and up-to-date descriptions of many important available data systems. [+]

Review Knowledge Representation Techniques: A Rough Set Approach (Studies in Fuzziness and Soft Computing) / Springer:

The basis for the material in this book centers around a long term research project with autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle systems. One of the main research topics in the project is knowledge representation and reasoning. The focus of the research has been on the development of tractable combinations of approximate and nonmonotonic reasoning systems. The techniques developed are based on intuitions from rough set theory. Efforts have been made to take theory into practice by instantiating research results in the context of traditional relational database or deductive database systems. This book contains a cohesive, self-contained collection of many of the theoretical and applied research results that have been achieved in this project and for the most part pertain to nonmonotonic and approximate reasoning systems developed for an experimental unmanned aerial vehicle system used in the project. This book should be of interest to the theoretician and applied researcher alike and to autonomous system developers and software agent and intelligent system developers.

Review The Information Society: An International Perspective / Praeger Publishers:

Katz examines the development of the "information society" in developing countries and offers a comprehensive comparison of how such a society evolves in developed and developing nations. Among the issues explored are: the emergence of a sizable information workforce across countries; the occurrence of internal structural similarities of information workforces in different countries; and the existence of global trends in the diffusion of information techniques. In the absence of common trends and development patterns, the author offers an explanation of the factors causing different evolutional paths. Based on his analysis, Katz derives new hypotheses for the diffusion of information technologies and the expansion of information workforce in developing countries.

Dewey code: 004.368
List Price: $162.00

Review Hardware-Software Co-Synthesis of Distributed Embedded Systems / Springer:

Embedded computer systems use both off-the-shelf microprocessors and application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) to implement specialized system functions. Examples include the electronic systems inside laser printers, cellular phones, microwave ovens, and an automobile anti-lock brake controller. Embedded computing is unique because it is a co-design problem - the hardware engine and application software architecture must be designed simultaneously. Hardware-Software Co-Synthesis of Distributed Embedded Systems proposes new techniques such as fixed-point iterations, phase adjustment, and separation analysis to efficiently estimate tight bounds on the delay required for a set of multi-rate processes preemptively scheduled on a real-time reactive distributed system. Based on the delay bounds, a gradient-search co-synthesis algorithm with new techniques such as sensitivity analysis, priority prediction, and idle- processing elements elimination are developed to select the number and types of processing elements in a distributed engine, and determine the allocation and scheduling of processes to processing elements. New communication modeling is also presented to analyze communication delay under interaction of computation and communication, allocate interprocessor communication links, and schedule communication. Hardware-Software Co-Synthesis of Distributed Embedded Systems is the first book to describe techniques for the design of distributed embedded systems, which have arbitrary hardware and software topologies. The book will be of interest to: academic researchers for personal libraries and advanced-topics courses in co-design as well as industrial designers who are building high-performance, real-time embedded systems with multiple processors.

Review Global Data Management - Emerging Communication (Studies in New Technologies and Practices in Communication) (Studies in New Technologies and Practices in Communication) / Ios Pr Inc:

Not many years ago, some researcher created the vision of the ‘data utility’ as a key enabler towards ubiquitous and pervasive computing. As for the water and power grid, there should be a utility infrastructure, designed for worldwide availability, providing continuous access to persistent information. Such utility service should provide appropriate guarantees in terms of security, data availability and survivability, and performance independent of location from which it is accessed. Decentralization and replication would be the approach to make it resistant against security attacks. Several projects have explored (and still are exploring) the feasibility of the vision, each having a different emphasis on individual features such as data durability, uniform geographic access, privacy and support for uncensorship, mobility support, or other. Applications which benefit from such global data service would be many, ranging from distributed, Internet-wide file services, to mobile data provisioning, content distribution, data backup, digital libraries and information retrieval. Similarly, information systems for national security, world-wide safety infrastructures and other systems which rely on sensors (physical or logical e. g. firewalls, packet filters), all require a decentralized, inter-organizational data collection and processing infrastructure, able to process in real time a huge amount of data, and filter, correlate and securely distribute information to many users. This book aims at presenting an organic view on the research and technologies that are bringing us towards the realization of the vision.
