Review Contingency Planning and Disaster Recovery: Protecting Your Organization's Resources / Computer Technology Research Corporation:As organizations implement a greater number of mission-critical applications over distributed networks, they become more vulnerable to potential disasters. CTR's 229-page report explores guidelines for developing successful contingency and disaster recovery strategies that will protect company resources and minimize downtime. Disaster Recovery: An Overview In today's distributed computing environments, organizations are more vulnerable than ever to the possibility of technical difficulties impeding communications. Any disaster, from floods and fires to Internet viruses and espionage, can affect the availability, integrity, and confidentiality of critical business resources and leave an organization virtually inoperative. CTR's new report, Contingency Planning and Disaster Recovery: Protecting Your Organization's Resources, explores the computer-related risks facing organizations today and offers the latest in disaster recovery strategies, technologies, and tested contingency plans. Disaster Recovery Issues and Concerns Disaster recovery has taken on a new sense of urgency in recent years due to the expanding role of computers in the organization and the increasing occurrence of various types of disasters. CTR's new report covers critical disaster recovery issues, including the following: hot, warm, and cold sites; dual data centers; disaster insurance; business impact analyses; and legal liabilities. The report addresses the most current concerns regarding the security and protection of local area networks (LANs), the mainframe, and client/server (C/S) systems. The report also includes a discussion of the available backup options and reviews tape management, direct access storage device (DASD) management, new backup paradigms, scalability and administration methods. Internet Security Issues Contingency Planning and Disaster Recovery: Protecting Your Organization's Resources provides an in-depth examination of Internet and Web security issues. [+]
Understanding the risks of connecting to the Internet and learning how to minimize those risks is imperative to building a secure environment which enables information systems (IS) managers to use this technology. The security risks of an Internet connection include the following: Internet protocol (IP) spoofing, session hijacking, password theft, denial of service attacks, and viruses. The report also addresses Web security issues and offers valuable guidelines and a list of resources to help ensure the security of electronic transmissions. Developing, Testing, and Implementing a Contingency Plan Contingency Planning and Disaster Recovery: Protecting Your Organization's Resources outlines practical disaster recovery goals and explains how to best meet these goals through a step-by-step plan. The report includes a discussion of who should be involved in the planning and why it is essential to identify and prioritize critical business applications and information. Testing the disaster recovery plan and the benefits of feedback, "mock" tests, creative testing, and testing tools, are also covered in the report. As the computing environment becomes more complex, and as computing becomes more distributed, IS managers must take preventive, precautionary, and preparatory measures to avoid a complete shutdown, should a disaster occur. This new CTR report is a valuable resource for IS managers responsible for these tasks.

Review Mining Very Large Databases with Parallel Processing (Advances in Database Systems) / Springer:Mining Very Large Databases with Parallel Processing addresses the problem of large-scale data mining. It is an interdisciplinary text, describing advances in the integration of three computer science areas, namely `intelligent' (machine learning-based) data mining techniques, relational databases and parallel processing. The basic idea is to use concepts and techniques of the latter two areas - particularly parallel processing - to speed up and scale up data mining algorithms. The book is divided into three parts. The first part presents a comprehensive review of intelligent data mining techniques such as rule induction, instance-based learning, neural networks and genetic algorithms. Likewise, the second part presents a comprehensive review of parallel processing and parallel databases. Each of these parts includes an overview of commercially-available, state-of-the-art tools. The third part deals with the application of parallel processing to data mining. The emphasis is on finding generic, cost-effective solutions for realistic data volumes. Two parallel computational environments are discussed, the first excluding the use of commercial-strength DBMS, and the second using parallel DBMS servers. [+]
It is assumed that the reader has a knowledge roughly equivalent to a first degree (BSc) in accurate sciences, so that (s)he is reasonably familiar with basic concepts of statistics and computer science. The primary audience for Mining Very Large Databases with Parallel Processing is industry data miners and practitioners in general, who would like to apply intelligent data mining techniques to large amounts of data. The book will also be of interest to academic researchers and postgraduate students, particularly database researchers, interested in advanced, intelligent database applications, and artificial intelligence researchers interested in industrial, real-world applications of machine learning.

Review Towards Mathematical Philosophy: Papers from the Studia Logica conference Trends in Logic IV (Trends in Logic) / Springer:This volume contains a collection of articles applying methods of logic or, more generally, of mathematics to solve problems, some of which come from logic itself, others from other sciences. Its range of subjects is far from complete, but broadly representative. The first group of papers in this volume consists of contributions to pure and applied modal logic. The problems discussed here range from the structure of lattices of normal and other modal propositional logics to modal proof theory and to the semantics of quantified modal logic. The second group of papers deals with Many-valued logics - an extensive domain of strictly logical investigations rooting in philosophical questions concerning the nature of logical values. Logical investigations in cognitive science have successfully utilized methods and systems of belief revision, non-monotonic logic and dynamic epistemic logic. Towards Mathematical Philosophy deals with focal issues of belief revision. The volume concludes with contributions which may be seen to belong to the field of formal epistemology, the area applying logical, probabilistic, game-theoretic and other formal methods to problems and issues in epistemology and philosophy of science, such as those concerning anti-realism, skepticism, theory comparison and theory choice, justification, sources of knowledge and learning theories.

Review Planning and Architectural Design of Modern Command Control Communications and Information Systems: Military and Civilian Applications (The Springer International ... Series in Engineering and Computer Science) / Springer:The subject of this book is Command Control Communication and Information (C3I), which is the management infrastructure for any large or complex dynamic resource system. Decision-making is the essence of C3I, which is accomplished through phased implementation of a set of facilities, communications, personnel, equipment and procedures for monitoring, forecasting, planning, directing, allocating resources, and generating options to achieve specific and general objectives. A C3I system is a decision-making network that reflects a hierarchical organization of C3I nodes. Each node is responsible for the management of some portion of the available resources, where the higher level nodes are responsible for a correspondingly greater portion of the resources. Within a C3I system, both command and control decision-making occur at every level of the hierarchy. Command decisions at one level determine how to satisfy the management decisions at a higher level. By taking similar national and international systems as a model, this book explains how the management infrastructure can be planned and designed using available technologies, techniques and standards to achieve stated user operational requirements, including time and cost constraints which may be imposed on the system. The book discusses design requirements and the technical and operational issues raised, and then deals with the main subject of designing C3I systems. This book serves as a valuable reference to professionals and C3I system designers.
