Review Partitioning Data Sets: Dimacs Workshop April 19-21, 1993 (Dimacs Series in Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science, Vol 19) / American Mathematical Society:

Partitioning data sets into disjoint groups is a problem arising in many domains. The theory of cluster analysis aims to find groups that are both homogeneous (entities in the same group that are similar) and well separated (entities in different groups that are dissimilar). There has been rapid expansion in the axiomatic foundations and the computational complexity of such problems and in the design and analysis of exact or heuristic algorithms to solve them. Applications have burgeoned in psychology, computer vision, target tracking, and other areas. This book contains papers presented at the workshop Partioning Data Sets held at DIMACS in April 1993. Some of the papers cover the main paradigms of the field of cluster analysis methods and algorithms. Other topics include partitioning problems arising from multitarget tracking and surveillance and from computer and human vision. The multiplicity of approaches, methods, problems, and algorithms make for lively and informative reading.

Review Storming Media / Effective Use of Java Data Objects in Developing Database Applications; Advantages and Disadvantages Publication date: 2004
Price: $49.95

Review Effective Use of Java Data Objects in Developing Database Applications; Advantages and Disadvantages / Storming Media:

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A629424. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Currently, the most common approach in developing database applications is to use an object-oriented language for the frontend module and a relational database for the backend datastore. The major disadvantage of this approach is the well-known impedance mismatch in which some form of mapping is required to connect the objects in the frontend and the relational tuples in the backend. Java Data Objects (JDO) technology is recently proposed Java API that eliminates the impedance mismatch. By using JDO API, the programmers deal strictly with objects. JDO hides the details of the backend datastore by providing the object-oriented view of the datastore. JDO automatically handles the mapping between the objects and the underlying data in the relational database, which is hidden from the programmer. [+]
This thesis investigates the effectiveness of JDO. Part of the analysis will develop a database application using JDO. Although JDO provides the benefits of object-orientation in design and implementation of the databases, it is not immune from problems and limitations. The thesis will also analyze the advantages and disadvantages of using JDO and discuss the areas requiring improvements in future releases.

Review Business Modeling and Data Mining (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Data Management Systems) / Morgan Kaufmann:

Business Modeling and Data Mining demonstrates how real world business problems can be formulated so that data mining can answer them. The concepts and techniques presented in this book are the essential building blocks in understanding what models are and how they can be used practically to reveal hidden assumptions and needs, determine problems, discover data, determine costs, and explore the whole domain of the problem. This book articulately explains how to understand both the strategic and tactical aspects of any business problem, identify where the key leverage points are and determine where quantitative techniques of analysis - such as data mining - can yield most benefit. It addresses techniques for discovering how to turn colloquial expression and vague descriptions of a business problem first into qualitative models and then into well-defined quantitative models (using data mining) that can then be used to find a solution. The book completes the process by illustrating how these findings from data mining can be turned into strategic or tactical implementations. · Teaches how to discover, construct and refine models that are useful in business situations· Teaches how to design, discover and develop the data necessary for mining · Provides a practical approach to mining data for all business situations· Provides a comprehensive, easy-to-use, fully interactive methodology for building models and mining data· Provides pointers to supplemental online resources, including a downloadable version of the methodology and software tools.

Review Agent-Based Hybrid Intelligent Systems / Springer:

Solving complex problems in real-world contexts, such as financial investment planning or mining large data collections, involves many different sub-tasks, each of which requires different techniques. To deal with such problems, a great diversity of intelligent techniques are available, including traditional techniques like expert systems approaches and soft computing techniques like fuzzy logic, neural networks, or genetic algorithms. These techniques are complementary approaches to intelligent information processing rather than competing ones, and thus better results in problem solving are achieved when these techniques are combined in hybrid intelligent systems. Multi-Agent Systems are ideally suited to model the manifold interactions among the many different components of hybrid intelligent systems. This book introduces agent-based hybrid intelligent systems and presents a framework and methodology allowing for the development of such systems for real-world applications. The authors focus on applications in financial investment planning and data mining.
