Publication date: 2002-10-31
Dewey code: 006.7
List Price: $121.00

Review Shape Analysis and Retrieval of Multimedia Objects (Multimedia Systems and Applications) / Springer:

With the explosive growth of Multimedia Applications, the ability to index/retrieve multimedia objects in an efficient way is challenging to both researchers and practitioners. A major data type stored and managed by these applications is the representation of two dimensional (2D) objects. Objects contain many features (e. g. , color, texture, and shape) that have meaningful semantics. From those features, shape is an important feature that conforms with the way human beings interpret and interact with the real world objects. The shape representation of objects can therefore be used for their indexing, retrieval and as similarity measure. The object databases can be queried and searched for different purposes. For example, a CAD application for manufacturing industrial parts might intend to reduce the cost of building new industrial parts by searching for reusable existing parts in a database. Regarding an alternative trademark registry application, one might need to ensure that a new registered trademark is sufficiently distinctive from the existing marks by searching the database. [+]
Therefore, one of the important functionalities required by all these applications is the capability to find objects in a database that match a given object. Traditional books on computer vision and informational retrieval are too general, and they do not provide advanced or specific information regarding shape analysis and recognition. Shape Analysis and Retrieval of Multimedia Objects provides a comprehensive survey of the most advanced and powerful shape retrieval techniques used in practice today. In addition, this monograph addresses key methodological issues for evaluation of the shape retrieval methods. Shape Analysis and Retrieval of Multimedia Objects is designed to meet the needs of practitioners and researchers in industry, and graduate-level students in Computer Science.

Review Efficient XML Updates- Index-Aware Updates for a Native XML Database System / VDM Verlag Dr. Mueller e.K.:

With the rapidly evolving XML technology and thereby ever-increasing number of XML documents, the importance of providing efficient tools for managing these enormous amounts of data is rising every day. Native XML database systems are such tools. Like other XML database systems they need indices in order to provide efficient and fast access to the data. These indices represent redundant data structures in the database and therefore have to be kept consistent, whenever the underlying base data is manipulated. Updating fragments of an XML document with automated, transparent, and efficient index maintenance is the central theme of this book. Author Harald Burger first analyses the two most prominent existing proposals for XML updates, namely the W3C's proposed extension of XQuery with operations for data manipulation and XUpdate. He then introduces an efficient and simple way to keep the indices in an XML DBMS consistent: the Simple Update API for the native XML database management system Infonyte DB. This book is addressed to professionals involved in XML and database development. It is also directed towards researchers in the XML area and beginning graduate or advanced undergraduate students of computer science.

Review Spend Analysis: The window into strategic sourcing / J. Ross Publishing:

A growing number of senior executives are coming to realize that strategic supply management can be a significant driver of improved corporate performance and better risk management. Spend analysis is the most critical component, and the starting point, of strategic supply management and is essential to achieving world-class performance. If you cannot analyze your spend data, many opportunities for improvement beyond the low hanging fruit are without doubt being missed. One of the foundation blocks for transforming an organizations practices to world-class supply management is the business process called strategic sourcing. And one of the requirements for enabling world-class strategic sourcing results is rigorous spend analysis. There is a lot of confusion on what constitutes spend analysis and what benefits can it provide. Spend analysis can help improve several areas: the identification of cost reduction opportunities, the prioritization of sourcing projects, the negotiated results, and the tracking and monitoring to ensure that negotiated results reach the bottom-line. It can also play an important role in improving compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley. However, implementations are complex and involve many departments within an organization. If the implementations are done correctly, they can yield high ROI. [+]
If not, they can consume money and deliver no returns due to lack of adoption. Spend Analysis: The Window into Strategic Sourcing is the definitive text on this important subject, written by leaders in the field. It is currently the only reference that provides in-depth guidance on what spend analysis really is, what it specifically involves, and how to use it in your journey to world-class performance. It provides both an executive overview and technical details for practitioners. Readers do not need specialized knowledge in database systems, information technology or any other field to gain insights from reading this book. It is a must read for procurement, supply chain management, operations, and finance executives, and for practitioners and consultants. Key Features: -Offers guidelines and examples for building a business case for spend analysis and enumerates the important factors that ensure a successful implementation -Includes case studies and various examples of savings opportunities revealed by spend analysis -Provides information on transaction data and source systems used in spend analysis and explores various components of spend analysis application in detail -Compares commonly used Industry Standard Commodity Taxonomies which play an important role not just in spend analysis but across the entire ERP footprint -Presents advanced concepts in spend analysis such as how it can be used in combination with other applications and how it can drive better compliance.
