Review Multilevel Secure Transaction Processing (THE KLUWER INTERNATIONAL SERIES ON ADVANCES IN DATABASE) / Springer:

Information security is receiving a great deal of attention as computers increasingly process more and more sensitive information. A multilevel secure database management system (MLS DBMS) is designed to store, retrieve and process information in compliance with certain mandatory security requirements, essential for protecting sensitive information from unauthorized access, modification and abuse. Such systems are characterized by data objects labeled at different security levels and accessed by users cleared to those levels. Unless transaction processing modules for these systems are designed carefully, they can be exploited to leak sensitive information to unauthorized users. In recent years, considerable research has been devoted to the area of multilevel secure transactions that has impacted the design and development of trusted MLS DBMS products. Multilevel Secure Transaction Processing presents the progress and achievements made in this area. The book covers state-of-the-art research in developing secure transaction processing for popular MLS DBMS architectures, such as kernelized, replicated, and distributed architectures, and advanced transaction models such as workflows, long duration and nested models. Further, it explores the technical challenges that require future attention. Multilevel Secure Transaction Processing is an excellent reference for researchers and developers in the area of multilevel secure database systems and may be used in advanced level courses in database security, information security, advanced database systems, and transaction processing.

Review Efficient Structures for Geometric Data Management (Lecture Notes in Computer Science) / Springer:

The efficient management of geometric data, such as points, curves, or polyhedra in arbitrary dimensions, is of great importance in many complex database applications like CAD/CAM, robotics, or computer vision. To provide optimal support for geometric operations, it is crucial to choose efficient data representation schemes. The first part of this book contains a taxonomy and critical survey of common operations and representation schemes for geometric data. Then several new schemes for the efficient support of set operations (union, intersection) and search operations (point location, range search) are presented.

Review Parallel Database Systems: Prisma Workshop Noordwijk, the Netherlands, September 24-26, 1990 : Proceedings (Lecture Notes in Computer Science) / Springer:

This volume presents the proceedings of a workshop on parallel database systems organized by the PRISMA (Parallel Inference and Storage Machine) project. The invited contributions by internationally recognized experts give a thorough survey of several aspects of parallel database systems. The second part of the volume gives an in-depth overview of the PRISMA system. This system is based on a parallel machine, where the individual processors each have their own local memory and communicate with each other over a packet-switched network. On this machine a parallel object-oriented programming language, POOL-X, has been implemented, which provides dedicated support for database systems as well as general facilities for parallel programming. The POOL-X system then serves as a platform for a complete relational main-memory database management system, which uses the parallelism of the machine to speed up significantly the execution of database queries. The presentation of the PRISMA system, together with the invited papers, gives a broad overview of the state of the art in parallel database systems.

Review From Silicon Valley to Singapore: Location and Competitive Advantage in the Hard Disk Drive Industry (Stanford Business Books) / Stanford Business Books:

Momentous developments in the global economy over the last two decades have dramatically increased the availability of industrial investment sites and lowered the cost of relocating core activities to new countries. But how should these developments be exploited for competitive advantage? Firms face competing pressures: scale economies and the advantages of proximity push them to concentrate activities in one or only a few locations, while low wages and new markets invite dispersal across several countries. This book examines how location decisions have contributed to the global dominance of U. S. firms in the hard disk drive industry. In analyzing the industry since its beginnings some forty years ago, the book explains how American leadership in disk drives has rested on the formation of two complementary industrial clusters. Fundamental research and product development has been located almost entirely in the United States, principally California. Manufacturing has been concentrated in Southeast Asia (initially in Singapore and later in Thailand and Malaysia as well). This duality has proven key to the successful competitive position of the U. S. [+]
disk drive industry. Beyond the particulars of the disk drive industry, the authors present new perspectives on the sources of industrial leadership, the strategic behavior of multinational corporations, the geographic evolution of industry, and the creation and endurance of industrial clusters. Managers will gain insight into how location decisions can contribute to organizational effectiveness, and will learn that globalizing production, while keeping innovative activities at home, can contribute to their firms’ competitive advantage. Policy makers will find that first mover advantages may be as important for countries as for companies, since early and systematic efforts to attract a specific industry can generate a critical mass of investments that, over time, will make a location resistant to inducements offered by other countries.

Review Ordinary Shares. Exotic Methods: Financial Forecasting Using Data Mining Techniques / World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd:

Exotic methods refer to specific functions within general soft computing methods such as genetic algorithms, neural networks and rough sets theory. They are applied to ordinary shares for a variety of financial purposes, such as portfolio selection and optimization, classification of market states, forecasting of market states and data mining. This is in contrast to the wide spectrum of work done on exotic financial instruments, wherein advanced mathematics is used to construct financial instruments for hedging risks and for investment. In this book, particular aspects of the general method are used to create interesting applications. For instance, genetic niching produces a family of portfolios for the trader to choose from. Support vector machines, a special form of neural networks, forecast the financial markets; such a forecast is on market states, of which there are three — uptrending, mean reverting and downtrending. A self-organizing map displays in a vivid manner the states of the market. Rough sets with a new discretization method extract information from stock prices.

Review PDCA/Test / Auerbach Publications:

Most manuals assume software testing is being performed as part of a well-defined, structured development cycle based on clearly stated requirements and standards. Unfortunately, this is not often the case in the real world. Indeed, the one true constant in software development is change. PDCA/TEST presents a continuous quality framework based on Dr. Edward Deming's famous rapid application "spiral" development model for quality through a continuous improvement process to promote effective testing methods in both structured and unstructured environments. William E. Lewis shows you Deming's spiral approach as an alternative to the traditional waterfall method. In the waterfall method, one set of predefined sequential steps is followed with clearly enumerated requirements. But the spiral approach is one where these rigid sequential steps may, to varying degrees, be either lacking or different as circumstances demand. Starting from this fundamental building block, Lewis shows you how to: · Apply the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) quality wheel to the software testing process· Integrate a continuous quality framework into all phases of software development, including requirements analysis, logical design, physical design, program unit design, and coding· And choose the right testing tool (such as Bender & Associates Softtest) for the right test. [+]
The book also details the spiral methodology for software testing broken down into parts, steps and tasks documented with extensive checklists, templates, and technical discussions. You will also learn to:· Master black box, white box and gray box testing· Incorporate continuous improvement into inspections and walkthroughs· Verify the logical design, physical design, program unit design, and coding phases· And more. In sum, PDCA/TEST: A Framework for Software Testing gives you all the tools and knowledge you need to assure quality software testing throughout all stages of development, no matter how unstructured that process may wind up being.

Review Protocols by Invariants (Cambridge International Series on Parallel Computation) / Cambridge University Press:

Algorithms are a set of rules that specify a sequence of actions to be taken to solve a problem. Distributed algorithms, which are designed to solve many problems at once, are conceptually far more complex than algorithms in a single processing unit environment. When the number of simultaneous events becomes large, human minds cannot keep track of all of them. Naturally, it is necessary to know whether a distributed algorithm will have the desired effect. In this book, Dr. Schoone discusses assertational verification by system-wide invariants for use in verifying the behavior of distributed algorithms. The approach is entirely pragmatic; the author considers many different examples, over a wide range of algorithms and protocols. This volume will be an essential purchase for all those with an interest in distributed algorithms.
