Review Database Semantics: Semantic Issues in Multimedia Systems / Springer:Database Semantics: Semantic Issues in Multimedia Systems reflects the state of the art of emerging research on the meaning of multimedia information, as presented during IFIP's Eighth Data Semantics Working Conference (DS-8), organized by its Working Group 2. 6 on Databases, and held at Rotorua, New Zealand, in January 1999. DS-8 was planned as an active forum for researchers and practitioners focusing on those issues that involve the semantics of the information represented, stored, and manipulated by multimedia systems. Depending on the topic and state of research, issues may be covered either deeply theoretically or quite practically, or even both. These proceedings contain twenty-one papers carefully selected by an International Programme Committee and organized in six thematic areas: Video Data Modelling and Use; Image Databases; Applications of Multimedia Systems; Multimedia Modeling in General; Multimedia Information Retrieval; Semantics and Metadata. For almost every area, important topics and issues include: data modeling and query languages for media such as audio, video, and images; methodological aspects of multimedia database design; intelligent multimedia information retrieval; knowledge discovery and data mining in multimedia information; multimedia user interfaces. Three visionary keynote addresses, by famous experts Ramesh Jain, Hermann Maurer and Masao Sakauchi, set the stage for discussion and future directions for the field. The collection of papers that resulted now offers a glimpse of the excitement and enthusiasm from DS-8. Database Semantics: Semantic Issues in Multimedia Systems is suitable as a secondary text for a graduate-level course on database systems, multimedia systems, or information retrieval systems and as a reference for practitioners and researchers in industry.

Review Microsoft Versus Netscape: The Battle for the Internet Infrastructure / Computer Technology Research Corporation:CTR's new 200-page report details the battle between Microsoft and Netscape for dominance of the Internet and, therefore, of the computer industry. The report examines how this battle developed, the differences in their product lines, and each company's strategic plans for the future. The Internet Phenomenon The unprecedented growth of the Internet and the Web has left the computer industry without a clear leader. While Microsoft was continuing its dominance of the PC market, Netscape Communications Corp. quietly entered the browser arena with its Web browser, Netscape Navigator. Microsoft, the company that initially failed to realize the importance of the Internet, has found Netscape to be a significant competitor in this critical area. CTR's new report, Microsoft Versus Netscape: The Battle for the Internet Infrastructure, examines the struggle between Microsoft and Netscape to become the leader of the Internet market and, therefore, of the computer industry. The report provides an analysis of the two companies and explains what Netscape must do to remain a viable competitor in the Internet arena. Internet Strategies CTR's report evaluates the strategies of both Microsoft and Netscape. Netscape's strategy is simple: Shift the current computing paradigm from the PC desktop, where Microsoft is strong, to the network, where Microsoft has less control. [+]
As the report explains, the key to Netscape's success will be to take advantage of Microsoft's few weaknesses. Microsoft, the most influential software supplier in the world, has based its strategy on the dominance of the Windows operating system (OS). However, because networking and the Internet are becoming the focal point for application development, Microsoft has altered its strategy to include products designed to leverage its desktop dominance with the Internet. Dueling Internet Products Microsoft Versus Netscape: The Battle for the Internet Infrastructure provides a complete analysis of the Internet-related products of the two companies, focusing on the browsers: Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Netscape's Navigator. Other featured products include: Netscape's SuiteSpot Server Line, Microsoft's Internet Information Server (IIS) and Proxy Server, Microsoft's Directory Service Systems, Netscape Navigator's Administration Kit, and Microsoft's Internet Chat. The report examines the advantages and disadvantages of each company's products and explains how they fit into the overall company strategy. In addition, the report covers critical issues such as browser security and hypertext markup language (HTML) support. The Changing Computing Environment The Internet is becoming the core foundation for many companies' applications because the programming model is simpler to implement and maintain than client/server (C/S) computing. Microsoft and Netscape must develop product lines so users and third parties will rely on their products to run complex, daily business applications on the Internet. The report discusses the latest application development tools (ADTs) that will make the Internet transition possible and addresses the importance of delivering next-generation technology. CTR's Microsoft Versus Netscape: The Battle for the Internet Infrastructure is an invaluable resource for those responsible for shaping and maintaining their company's computer infrastructure.

Review Uncertainty Management in Information Systems: From Needs to Solutions / Springer:Uncertainty Management in Information Systems: From Needs to Solutions is a book about how information systems can be made to manage information permeated with uncertainty. This subject is at the intersection of two areas of knowledge: information systems is an area that concentrates on the design of practical systems that can store and retrieve information; uncertainty modeling is an area in artificial intelligence concerned with accurate representation of uncertain information and with inference and decision-making under conditions infused with uncertainty. The first part of this book describes issues and challenges in the area of imperfect information that confront information systems, and the second part covers the principal theories for modeling imperfect information, and shows how these theories may be adapted to information systems. All chapters are original contributions and present solutions that have been applied and the experiences that have been gained from those solutions. The material has been closely edited by the book's editors for content, consistency and style. This authoritative book is state-of-the-art coverage of `Uncertainty Management in Information Systems'.

Review Communication Protocol Specification and Verification (The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science) / Springer:Communication protocols are rules whereby meaningful communication can be exchanged between different communicating entities. In general, they are complex and difficult to design and implement. Specifications of communication protocols written in a natural language (e. g. English) can be unclear or ambiguous, and may be subject to different interpretations. As a result, independent implementations of the same protocol may be incompatible. In addition, the complexity of protocols make them very hard to analyze in an informal way. There is, therefore, a need for precise and unambiguous specification using some formal languages. Many protocol implementations used in the field have almost suffered from failures, such as deadlocks. When the conditions in which the protocols work correctly have been changed, there has been no general method available for determining how they will work under the new conditions. [+]
It is necessary for protocol designers to have techniques and tools to detect errors in the early phase of design, because the later in the process that a fault is discovered, the greater the cost of rectifying it. Protocol verification is a process of checking whether the interactions of protocol entities, according to the protocol specification, do indeed satisfy certain properties or conditions which may be either general (e. g. , absence of deadlock) or specific to the particular protocol system directly derived from the specification. In the 80s, an ISO (International Organization for Standardization) working group began a programme of work to develop formal languages which were suitable for Open Systems Interconnection (OSI). This group called such languages Formal Description Techniques (FDTs). Some of the objectives of ISO in developing FDTs were: enabling unambiguous, clear and precise descriptions of OSI protocol standards to be written, and allowing such specifications to be verified for correctness. There are two FDTs standardized by ISO: LOTOS and Estelle. Communication Protocol Specification and Verification is written to address the two issues discussed above: the needs to specify a protocol using an FDT and to verify its correctness in order to uncover specification errors in the early stage of a protocol development process. The readership primarily consists of advanced undergraduate students, postgraduate students, communication software developers, telecommunication engineers, EDP managers, researchers and software engineers. It is intended as an advanced undergraduate or postgraduate textbook, and a reference for communication protocol professionals.

Review Computational Neural Networks for Geophysical Data Processing (Handbook of Geophysical Exploration: Seismic Exploration) / Pergamon:This book was primarily written for an audience that has heard about neural networks or has had some experience with the algorithms, but would like to gain a deeper understanding of the fundamental material. For those that already have a solid grasp of how to create a neural network application, this work can provide a wide range of examples of nuances in network design, data set design, testing strategy, and error analysis. Computational, rather than artificial, modifiers are used for neural networks in this book to make a distinction between networks that are implemented in hardware and those that are implemented in software. The term artificial neural network covers any implementation that is inorganic and is the most general term. Computational neural networks are only implemented in software but represent the vast majority of applications. While this book cannot provide a blue print for every conceivable geophysics application, it does outline a basic approach that has been used successfully.

Review Quality Measures in Data Mining (Studies in Computational Intelligence) / Springer:Data mining analyzes large amounts of data to discover knowledge relevant to decision making. Typically, numerous pieces of knowledge are extracted by a data mining system and presented to a human user, who may be a decision-maker or a data-analyst. The user is confronted with the task of selecting the pieces of knowledge that are of the highest quality or interest according to his or her preferences. Since this selection is sometimes a daunting task, designing quality and interestingness measures has become an important challenge for data mining researchers in the last decade. This volume presents the state of the art concerning quality and interestingness measures for data mining. The book summarizes recent developments and presents original research on this topic. The chapters include surveys, comparative studies of existing measures, proposals of new measures, simulations, and case studies. Both theoretical and applied chapters are included. Papers for this book were selected and reviewed for correctness and completeness by an international review committee.
