Review Fault-Tolerant Parallel and Distributed Systems / Springer:

The most important uses of computing in the future will be those related to the global `digital convergence' where all computing becomes digital and internetworked. This convergence will be propelled by new and advanced applications in storage, searching, retrieval and exchanging of information in a myriad of forms. All of these will place heavy demands on large parallel and distributed computer systems because these systems have high intrinsic failure rates. The challenge to the computer scientist is to build a system that is inexpensive, accessible and dependable. The chapters in this book provide insight into many of these issues and others that will challenge researchers and applications developers. Included among these topics are: Fault-tolerance in communication protocols for distributed systems including synchronous and asynchronous group communication. Methods and approaches for achieving fault-tolerance in distributed systems such as those used in networks of workstations (NOW), dependable cluster systems, and scalable coherent interfaces (SCI)-based local area multiprocessors (LAMP). General models and features of distributed safety-critical systems built from commercial off-the-shelf components as well as service dependability in telecomputing systems. Dependable parallel systems for real-time processing of video signals. Embedding in faulty multiprocessor systems, broadcasting, system-level testing techniques, on-line detection and recovery from intermittent and permanent faults, and more. [+]
Fault-Tolerant Parallel and Distributed Systems is a coherent and uniform collection of chapters with contributions by several of the leading experts working on fault-resilient applications. The numerous techniques and methods included will be of special interest to researchers, developers, and graduate students.

Review Multiple. Distributed through American National Standards Institute (ANSI) / ISO/IEC 13249-5:2003, Information technology - Database languages - SQL multimedia and application packages - Part 5: Still image Publication date: 2007-08-23
List Price: $230.00
Price: $230.00

Review ISO/IEC 13249-5:2003, Information technology - Database languages - SQL multimedia and application packages - Part 5: Still image / Multiple. Distributed through American National Standards Institute (ANSI):

ISO/IEC 13249-5:2003:introduces the still image part of ISO/IEC 13249 (all parts); gives the references necessary for ISO/IEC 13249-5:2003; defines notations and conventions specific to ISO/IEC 13249-5:2003; defines concepts specific to ISO/IEC 13249-5:2003; defines the still image user-defined types and their associated routines. The still image user-defined types defined in ISO/IEC 13249-5:2003 adhere to the following. A still image user-defined type is generic to image handling. It addresses the need to store, manage and retrieve information based on aspects of inherent image characteristics such as height, width and format and based on image features such as average color, color histogram, positional color and texture. It also addresses the need to employ manipulation such as rotation, scaling as well as similarity assessment. A still image user-defined type does not redefine the database language SQL directly or in combination with another still image data type. The still image user-defined types are applicable to all different image formats. However, not all functionality can be used with all known still image formats. An implementation of ISO/IEC 13249-5:2003 may exist in environments that also support information and content management, decision support, data mining and data warehousing systems. Application areas addressed by implementations of ISO/IEC 13249-5:2003 include, but are not restricted to, graphics, multimedia, scientific research and medicine.

Review Elsevier Science / HRT-HOOD: A Structured Design Method for Hard Real-Time Ada Systems (Real-Time Safety Critical Systems) Publication date: 1995-04-01
Dewey code: 577
Price: $213.00

Review HRT-HOOD: A Structured Design Method for Hard Real-Time Ada Systems (Real-Time Safety Critical Systems) / Elsevier Science:

The increasing use of computers for real-time control on board spacecrafts has brought with it a greater emphasis on the development methodology used for such systems. By their nature, spacecraft control computers have to operate unattended for long periods and because of the programmatics of space, systems are subject to a long development cycle. As a result, there are two distinct concerns, the first being that the development approach guarantees functional and timing correctness, the second being that problems, particularly those associated with timing, are considered as early as possible in the spacecraft development life cycle. The European Space Agency has, for a number of years, encouraged the development of software using HOOD. It was thus a natural next step to investigate the incorporation of time within the existing HOOD framework. This has proven to be very beneficial and this book describes the approach developed by the authors for handling Hard Real-Time applications. It describes both the background scheduling theory, provides practical examples of its application to real life problems, and demonstrates how it is used in the various phases of the development of Hard Real-Time systems.

Review ISO/IEC 9579:2000, Information technology - Remote database access for SQL with security enhancement / Multiple. Distributed through American National Standards Institute (ANSI):

This International Standard, Remote Database Access for SQL (RDA), defines a model for the remote interaction of an SQL-client and one or more SQL-servers through communication media, and defines the encoding of messages, the semantics of messages and associated facilities for mediating the interaction between one SQL-client and one SQL-server. This International Standard also defines a mapping of the RDA Protocol to the specific communication infrastructures TCP/IP and Transport Layer Security (TLS). This International Standard relies upon the facilities provided by ISO/IEC 9075 (SQL) and ISO/IEC 9075-3 (SQL/CLI). This International Standard also:identifies potential security vulnerabilities in remote database access using RDA,defines RDA facilities which protect against the potential vulnerabilities. Normative annexes provide:a Conformance Proforma,an optional language independent Application Programming Interface defined in the notational conventions of ISO/IEC 9075-3 (SQL/CLI) for invoking RDA Operations,an optional mapping of ISO/IEC 9075-3 (SQL/CLI) functions to RDA Operations, definitions of optional SQL-servers, the RDA Location Server and the RDA Support Server, to facilitate interoperation and data distribution in a heterogeneous environment,a set of security profiles that identify which RDA facilities and other security facilities are required for different levels of protection against potential vulnerabilities. Informative annexes provide:an analysis of security service requirements,an ASN. 1 specification for the RDA Protocol,an ASN. 1 specification for the encoding of multiple rows. This International Standard does not constrain:conforming RDA-client environments to be implemented using any particular processor decomposition, conforming RDA-server environments to be implemented using any particular processor decomposition. This International Standard refers to but does not define:protocols and security mechanisms for communication confidentiality, integrity and authentication of communicating peers, digital signature and authentication mechanisms supported by protocol elements of RDA. [+]
This International Standard does not define:algorithms for query decomposition or for the combining of results in a distributed database environment, mechanisms for recovery in the event that transaction co-ordination fails, mechanisms for storage integrity and confidentiality using cryptography, mechanisms to counter Denial of Service attacks.

Review Teletraffic Engineering in a Competitive World (Teletraffic Science and Engineering) / Elsevier Science:

The International Teletraffic Congress (ITC) has since its inception in 1955 focused on the application of theoretical and simulation models to the design and performance analysis of communication networks. This tradition was continued which created a forum for discussion of current research, to disseminate information about "best practice", and to encourage cross-fertilization between different technical and technology specialists. Over the last few conferences there has been a gradual re-focusing of interest, with two revolutionary changes in the sector acting as catalysts. These are rapid technical transformations and an increasingly competitive market. These changes were reflected by deliberately encouraging papers that consider new technologies, regulation, economics and pricing. The papers that appear in this volume have been refereed by International experts, and in addition were looked at individually by advocates on the National Technical Committee and again at the final Technical Programme meeting in London. The quality of submission was high, 16 plenary and 115 contributed papers that reflected the major themes were selected. These and invited papers focussed on the key areas of the Internet and Mobility, coupled with hot-topics sessions targeted at developing countries link together to form an exciting programme.

Review Data Mining in Structural Biology: Signal Transduction and Beyond (Ernst Schering Research Foundation Workshop) / Springer:

This book combines in a comprehensive manner the results of biochemical studies, structural biology investigations and small molecule design within some of the protein classes that play major roles in signal transduction: the protein kinases, the growth factor family and the transcription factors. It is described how these proteins communicate with each other via different signalling pathways. Three-dimensional structures of these proteins are presented, and their interaction with small molecules and co-factors are described. The use of these proteins for pharmaceutical research and the design of small molecules and their selectivity towards such proteins are discussed.
