Review Principles of Database Query Processing for Advanced Applications (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Data Management Systems) / Morgan Kaufmann:The aim of query processing is to find information in one or more databases and deliver it to the user quickly and efficiently. Traditional techniques work well for databases with standard, single-site relational structures, but databases containing more complex and diverse types of data demand new query processing and optimization techniques. Most real-world data is not well structured. Today's databases typically contain much non-structured data such as text, images, video, and audio, often distributed across computer networks. In this complex milieu(typified by the world wide Web), efficient and accurate query processing becomes quite challenging. Principles of Database Query Processing for Advanced Applications teaches the basic concepts and techniques of query processing and optimization for a variety of data forms and database systems, whether structured or unstructured. * This is the only reference work that covers query processing and optimization techniques for structured and unstructured data, written with the non-expert in mind, with a minimum of mathematical details. * This book teaches query processing techniques for multimedia, object-oriented, deductive, parallel, and distributed databases, as well as heterogeneous multidatabase systems, fuzzy relational databases, andtechniques for different types of unstructured data. * Each chapter contains examples, tables and figures, class exercises, and a detailed bibliography. Fortunately, most developers and end users never have to think about how database queries actually work. [+]
For those who want to know what happens under the hood, Principles of Database Query Processing for Advanced Applications provides a textbook-style guide to an important area of database theory-how queries work in a variety of databases, and the strategies and algorithms used to optimize them. The book starts out on familiar ground, outlining the basics of relational databases, such as SQL and query optimization. After providing this foundation, the book quickly ventures into more cutting-edge turf, escorting readers through the emerging world of object-oriented databases (a much richer field, where the rules of optimization are not yet agreed upon). The guide delves into other areas where developers are likely to have to adopt a do-it-yourself approach to database design, including distributed database systems; multi-database systems, where data from several databases needs to be joined as efficiently as possible; and parallel-processing systems, where queries can be processed in parallel. Subsequent chapters cover fuzzy logic queries and searching strategies that work with text and image databases. Each chapter provides exercises for the reader, making this a good textbook for students or professionals who need an authoritative source on the theory of database design.

Review Database: Principles, Programming, and Performance, Second Edition (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Data Management Systems) / Morgan Kaufmann:This second edition relies on the same successful approach that distinguished the first: it covers the principles of database theory with unmatched thoroughness, and it rigorously links theory to the real world of database programming and administration. A careful discussion of SQL standards and a multitude of examples drawn from actual databases-Oracle, DB2, and Informix-complements the authors' concept-oriented instruction, allowing you to develop product-specific understanding and to learn the important differences between the SQL dialects that will enable you to write portable applications. * Focuses extensively on the object-relational model that is rapidly gaining acceptance and revolutionizing the database industry. Collection types and UDF's are thoroughly covered. * Introduces new relational features of SQL taken from the latest versions of today's most popular database products, Oracle, DB2, and Informix. * Offers thorough coverage of the SQL-99 standard, including additions designed to help you take full advantage of the object-relational model. * Provides expanded programming examples intended to improve your understanding of transaction processing and error handling. * Explains clearly the principles of logical database design, including those relating to the E-R model and normalization, with a number of new illustrations and examples. * Presents the latest indexing and query processing techniques, such as bitmap indexing, and shows how to use them to achieve significant performance improvements. A standard text for database designers and programmers, Database: Principles, Programming, and Performance is out in a new edition. [+]
This latest version of the detailed work of the O'Neils includes a new chapter on Object-Relational Structured Query Language (SQL) and its implementations in Oracle and Informix products. On top of that, the authors have revised their chapters on basic and advanced SQL, and added product-specific details (particularly having to do with Oracle, Informix, and IBM DB2 database products) to most areas of their coverage. As a result of these revisions, this book does a great job of balancing academic material with practical examples. Furthermore, this book does a good job of straddling the schism that's begun to open up in the world of database architecture. Perhaps better than any other volume, this book documents the emerging object-relational strategy for representing data fairly, although most of the authors' coverage (as is fitting) goes to the more firmly established and better-supported relational database model. The authors' style intersperses sequences of theory-oriented prose and diagrams with queries and other listings that have to do with specific implementations, allowing readers to observe many of the phenomena described here. This book is a fine picture of the state of the art, painted with influences from business as well as information science. -David Wall Topics covered: Modern database design and operation, including basic Structured Query Language (SQL), Object-Relational SQL and the object-relational model, indexing, query parsing, and performance-minded design.

Review Using Automated Fix Generation to Mitigate SQL Injection Vulnerabilities / VDM Verlag Dr. Mueller e.K.:Since 2002, over 10% of total cyber vulnerabilities were SQL injection vulnerabilities (SQLIVs). Since most developers are not experienced software security practitioners, a solution for correctly removing SQLIVs that does not require security expertise is desirable. In this paper, an automated fix generation algorithm for removing SQLIVs by replacing SQL statements with prepared SQL statements is described. Automated fix generation is a type of automated code generation that analyzes project artifacts containing faults and uses the analysis to generate fault free alternative or replacement code. Prepared SQL statements have a static structure and take type-specific input parameters, which prevents SQL injection attack input from changing the structure and logic of a statement. The automated fix algorithm is evolved over the course of preparing for and analyzing the results of four formative and evaluative case studies.

Review Oracle Data Warehouse Tuning for 10g / Digital Press:"This book should satisfy those who want a different perspective than the official Oracle documentation. It will cover all important aspects of a data warehouse while giving the necessary examples to make the reading a lively experience. " - Tim Donar, Author and Systems Architect for Enterprise Data WarehousesTuning a data warehouse database focuses on large transactions, mostly requiring what is known as throughput. Throughput is the passing of large amounts of information through a server, network and Internet environment, backwards and forwards, constantly! The ultimate objective of a data warehouse is the production of meaningful and useful reporting, from historical and archived data. The trick is to make the reports print within an acceptable time frame. A data model contains tables and relationships between tables. Tuning a data model involves Normalization and Denormalization. Different approaches are required depending on the application, such as OLTP or a Data Warehouse. Inappropriate database design can make SQL code impossible to tune. Poor data modeling can have a most profound effect on database performance since all SQL code is constructed from the data model. [+]
* Takes users beyond basics to critical issues in running most efficient data warehouse applications* Illustrates how to keep data going in and out in the most productive way possible* Focus is placed on Data Warehouse performance tuning.

Review Database Performance Tuning and Optimization: Using Oracle / Springer:Examples abound in database applications of well-formulated queries running slowly, even if all levels of the database are properly tuned. It is essential to address each level separately by focusing first on underlying principles and root causes, and only then proposing both theoretical and practical solutions. "Database Performance Tuning and Optimization" comprehensively addresses each level separately by focusing first on underlying principles and root causes, and then proposes both theoretical and practical solutions using Oracle 8i examples as the RDBMS. The book combines theory with practical tools (in the form of Oracle and UNIX shell scripts) to address the tuning and optimization issues of DBAs and developers, irrespective of whether they use Oracle. Topics and features: * An integrated approach to tuning by improving all three levels of a database (conceptual, internal, and external) for optimal performance * Balances theory with practice, developing underlying principles and then applying them to other RDBMSs, not just Oracle * Includes CD-ROM containing all scripts and methods utilized in the book * Coverage of data warehouses provides readers much needed principles and tools for tuning large reporting databases * Coverage of web-based databases * Appendix B shows how to create an instance and its associated database and all its objects * Provides useful exercises, references, and Oracle 8i and select 9i examples Based on nearly two decades of experience as an Oracle developer and DBA, the author delivers comprehensive coverage of the fundamental principles and methodologies of tuning and optimizing database performance. Database professionals and practitioners with some experience developing, implementing, and maintaining relational databases will find the work an essential resource. It is also suitable for professional short courses and self-study purposes.

Review Schema-Free SQL- Providing Freedom from The Schema Knowledge Required to Formulate SQL Queries / VDM Verlag Dr. Mueller e.K.:The current standard query language SQL requires users to know how data is normalized and stored in a database schema to compose queries. One of the major challenges in generating these queries is the identification of joins to connect attributes located in different relations. Constructing these joins in SQL or through a graphical query interface is tedious, error-prone, and not intuitive to casual users. Any new query language should maintain the expressiveness of SQL without requiring schema knowledge or an additional model. A new Schema-Free query system is developed to support the automatic completion of an SQL query without the full specification of joins and tables. A new algorithm efficiently constructs all maximal sets of lossless joins in a schema an order of magnitude faster than previous methods. The query system uses a new query language allowing under-specification of SQL queries to remove the burden of schema knowledge from the user while continuing to support the full range of SQL queries. Queries with multiple interpretations are disambiguated through three different approaches.
