Review The Content Management Handbook (Become an Expert) / Curtin University Books:

There are many benefits in using content management software (CMS) to support content authoring and site management for both intranets and websites. These benefits can only be realized when the organization has developed a content management strategy and undertaken a rigorous analysis of the functionality that the CMS must provide, taking into account the Total Cost of Implementation of a CMS application. Information professionals will increasingly play an important role in developing content management strategies and managing intranets and websites, using their professional skills in carrying out information audits, identifying the information needs of users, and developing information architectures and metadata schemes. This essential book provides step-by-step guidance on how to develop a content management strategy, sets out the elements of a content management system and provides advice on the specification, selection, implementation and management of content management software. This practical handbook takes advantage of the author's extensive consulting experience in supporting CMS implementations in a wide range of organizations in the UK, Europe and the USA, including government agencies, charities and multinational businesses. It is of great value to information staff at all levels who are involved in the process of using a CMS to support the development of websites and intranets.

Review Intelligent Document Retrieval: Exploiting Markup Structure (The Information Retrieval Series) / Springer:

Collections of digital documents can nowadays be found everywhere in institutions, universities or companies. Examples are Web sites or intranets. But searching them for information can still be painful. Searches often return either large numbers of matches or no suitable matches at all. Such document collections can vary a lot in size and how much structure they carry. What they have in common is that they typically do have some structure and that they cover a limited range of topics. The second point is significantly different from documents on the Web in general. The type of search system that we propose in this book can suggest ways of refining or relaxing the query to assist a user in the search process. In order to suggest sensible query modifications we would need to know what the documents are about. Explicit knowledge about the document collection encoded in some electronic form is what we need. [+]
However, typically such knowledge is not available. This book describes how that knowledge can be contructed automatically. This book demonstrates how document markup structure can be used to construct domain models for collections of partially structured documents shows how such knowledge can be utilized when searching the document collections presents two implemented search systems which demonstrate the usefulness of this approach.

Review Towards Very Large Knowledge Bases, Knowledge Building & Knowledge Sharing 1995 / Ios Pr Inc:

In the early days of artificial intelligence it was widely believed that powerful computers would, in the future, enable mankind to solve many real-world problems through the use of very general inference procedures and very little domain-specific knowledge. With the benefit of hindsight, this view can now be called quite naive. The field of expert systems, which developed during the early 1970s, embraced the paradigm that "Knowledge is Power" - even very fast computers require very large amounts of very specific knowledge to solve non-trivial problems. Thus, the field of large knowledge bases has emerged. This book presents progress on building and sharing very large-scale knowledge bases. Progress has been made in specific scientific domains, including molecular biology, where large knowledge bases have become important tools for researchers. Another development is the attention being paid to structuring large knowledge bases. The use of a carefully developed set of concepts, called an "ontalogy", is becoming almost standard practice. This text provides a guide to the current state of the art in building and sharing very large knowledge bases, and is intended to act as a catalyst to future research, development and applications.

Review Cooperative Systems Design: A Challenge of the Mobility Age (Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence and Applications) / Ios Pr Inc:

The main goal of the COOP conferences is to contribute to the solution of problems related to the design of cooperative systems, and to the integration of these systems in organizational settings. The main assumption behind the COOP conferences is that cooperative design requires a deep understanding of cooperative work in groups and organizations, involving both artifacts and social practices. The COOP 2002 conference is mainly devoted to the following issues: the gap between 'virtual' and 'material' artifacts in human collaboration; collaboration among mobile actors; the WWW as a platform for cooperative systems and changing practices and organizations in the wake of the cooperative systems.

Review Adaptive and Personalized Semantic Web (Studies in Computational Intelligence) / Springer:

Web Personalization can be defined as any set of actions that can tailor the Web experience to a particular user or set of users. To achieve effective personalization, organizations must rely on all available data, including the usage and click-stream data (reflecting user behaviour), the site content, the site structure, domain knowledge, as well as user demographics and profiles. In addition, efficient and intelligent techniques are needed to mine this data for actionable knowledge, and to effectively use the discovered knowledge to enhance the users' Web experience. The aim of the International Workshop on Adaptive and Personalized Semantic Web that was held in the Sixteenth ACM Conference on Hypertext and Hypermedia (September 6-9, 2005, Salzburg, Austria) was to bring together researchers and practitioners in the fields of web engineering, adaptive hypermedia, semantic web technologies, knowledge management, information retrieval, user modelling, and other related disciplines which provide enabling technologies for personalization and adaptation on the World Wide Web. The book contains the papers presented during the workshop. Presentations of the papers are available online at www. hci. gr.

Review Exploratory Image Databases (AP Communications, Networking, and Multimedia Series) (Communications, Networking and Multimedia) / Academic Press:

The explosion of computer use and internet communication has placed new emphasis on the ability to store, retrieve and search for all types of images, both still photo and video images. The success and the future of visual information retrieval depends on the cutting edge research and applications explored in this book. It combines the expertise from both computer vision and database research. Unlike text retrieval and text/numeric databases the challenges of image databases are enormous. How do you use "data mining" to search for an image if you do not have "key words" to search? Exploratory Image Databases introduces the idea that it is possible to solve this problem by merging database systems into a single search and browse activity called "exploration. "Exploratory Image Databases is one of the first single-author books that unifies the critical emerging topic of image databases. A new approach to image databases, the work is divided into four central parts: introduction to the problems that image database research must solve; computer vision and information retrieval techniques; image database issues; and interface and engines for visual searches. Example: Imagine the difficulty of building and using a database for "face recognition," where an image of a face is used. In order to effectively use the image a huge number of characteristics would need to be entered in the database. The goal of future image databases is to use hardware and software to recognize and categorize images without typing in characteristics. [+]
* Comprehensive coverage of the image analysis as well as the database/theoretical aspects of image databases. * Extensive coverage of interfaces and interaction models, with a theoretical framework for the development of new interaction schemes. * Identifies three interaction models between users and image databases, two of which have no counterpart in traditional databases. * Coverage of the relation between image and text, including mixed search models and the automatic determination of the relation between images and text on large corpuses like the web. * Analysis of the process of signification in images and its influence on the interaction models and technological problems of image databases.

Review Relations and Graphs: Discrete Mathematics for Computer Scientists (E a T C S Monographs on Theoretical Computer Science) / Springer:

Relational methods can be found at various places in computer science, notably in data base theory, relational semantics of concurrency, relational type theory, analysis of rewriting systems, and modern programming language design. In addition, they appear in algorithms analysis and in the bulk of discrete mathematics taught to computer scientists. This book is devoted to the background of these methods. It explains how to use relational and graph-theoretic methods systematically in computer science. A powerful formal framework of relational algebra is developed with respect to applications to a diverse range of problem areas. Results are first motivated by practical examples, often visualized by both Boolean 0-1-matrices and graphs, and then derived algebraically.

Review Web Dynamics: Adapting to Change in Content, Size, Topology and Use / Springer:

The World-Wide-Web is a ubiquitous, global tool, used for finding information, communicating ideas, carrying out distributed computation, and conducting business. The web is highly dynamic in the quantity and nature of the information that it encompasses, which poses a host of challenges. There is a need to understand how the information content and usage of the web change, and to develop techniques for organising and manipulating web information which can handle and exploit its inherent dynamics. Access to the web may be from a variety of devices and interfaces, different users at different locations, and at varying times. There is thus also a need for techniques which dynamically adapt information presentation to the mode of access and to the specific user requirements.
