Drawing on a wide research field from the viewpoint of information modelling, this volume covers topics such as: the modelling and the tools for concept formation; associative search for databases and knowledge bases; enterprise modelling for enterprise integration systems; meta models for integrating multiple models, or for selecting appropriate ones; theoretical foundations for the modelling in databases; knowledge bases, and hyper media; natural language semantics for information modelling; software modelling for concurrent processes and distributed systems; object modelling and inference for vision, and manipulator and information modelling and taxonomies. The wide range of topics discussed is intended to provide advanced, in-depth and coherent understanding of these areas and their methodologies, as well as the mutual relationships between them. At the same time, the aim of the book is to enhance understanding of information modelling as the core concept and methodology for a wide variety of problem-solving methods.

Publication date: 1999-02-22
Dewey code: 005.74
List Price: $149.00
Price: $119.20

Review Fuzzy Database Modeling / Physica-Verlag Heidelberg:

Some recent fuzzy database modeling advances for the non-traditional applications are introduced in this book. The focus is on database models for modeling complex information and uncertainty at the conceptual, logical, physical design levels and from integrity constraints defined on the fuzzy relations. The database models addressed here are; the conceptual data models, including the ExIFO and ExIFO2 data models, the logical database models, including the extended NF2 database model, fuzzy object-oriented database model, and the fuzzy deductive object-oriented database model. Integrity constraints are defined on the fuzzy relations are also addressed. A continuing reason for the limited adoption of fuzzy database systems has been performance. There have been few efforts at defining physical structures that accomodate fuzzy information. A new access structure and data organization for fuzzy information is introduced in this book.

Publication date: 1997-08-31
Dewey code: 005.74
List Price: $148.50

Review Advanced Transaction Models and Architectures / Springer:

The traditional transaction model, with the atomicity, consistency, isolation and durability properties, was originally developed for data processing applications. To meet the new requirements and challenges for the next-generation information systems, researchers have continued to refine and generalize the traditional model in several directions. This book assembles an important collection of papers authored by world-renowned thinkers, designers and implementors of database systems, to describe developments that lie at the heart of current research in advanced transaction processing areas. The papers have been grouped into the following topical areas: + Workflow Transactions + Tool-Kit Approaches + Long Transactions and Semantics + Concurrency Control and Recovery + Transaction Optimization + Active Database Approach + On-Line Transaction Processing (OLTP) and On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) + Real-Time Data Management + Mobile Computing. Advanced Transaction Models and Architectures will provide researchers and students with the most complete survey of current research available on this subject. Broad in scope, this book could serve as a textbook not only in a specialized course at the graduate level, but also in an introductory course on advanced transaction systems. The book concludes with a complete bibliography which provides an invaluable guide for further reading.

Review Trusted Recovery and Defensive Information Warfare / Springer:

Information security concerns the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information processed by a computer system. With an emphasis on prevention, traditional information security research has focused little on the ability to survive successful attacks, which can seriously impair the integrity and availability of a system. Trusted Recovery And Defensive Information Warfare uses database trusted recovery, as an example, to illustrate the principles of trusted recovery in defensive information warfare. Traditional database recovery mechanisms do not address trusted recovery, except for complete rollbacks, which undo the work of benign transactions as well as malicious ones, and compensating transactions, whose utility depends on application semantics. Database trusted recovery faces a set of unique challenges. In particular, trusted database recovery is complicated mainly by (a) the presence of benign transactions that depend, directly or indirectly on malicious transactions; and (b) the requirement by many mission-critical database applications that trusted recovery should be done on-the-fly without blocking the execution of new user transactions. Trusted Recovery And Defensive Information Warfare proposes a new model and a set of innovative algorithms for database trusted recovery. Both read-write dependency based and semantics based trusted recovery algorithms are proposed. Both static and dynamic database trusted recovery algorithms are proposed. These algorithms can typically save a lot of work by innocent users and can satisfy a variety of attack recovery requirements of real world database applications. [+]
Trusted Recovery And Defensive Information Warfare is suitable as a secondary text for a graduate level course in computer science, and as a reference for researchers and practitioners in information security.

Review Quality Of Protection: Security Measurements and Metrics (Advances in Information Security) / Springer:

Quality of Protection: Security Measurements and Metrics is an edited volume based on the Quality of Protection Workshop in Milano, Italy (September 2005). This volume discusses how security research can progress towards quality of protection in security comparable to quality of service in networking and software measurements, and metrics in empirical software engineering. Information security in the business setting has matured in the last few decades. Standards such as IS017799, the Common Criteria (ISO15408), and a number of industry certifications and risk analysis methodologies have raised the bar for good security solutions from a business perspective. Designed for a professional audience composed of researchers and practitioners in industry, Quality of Protection: Security Measurements and Metrics is also suitable for advanced-level students in computer science.
