Review Database Design Theory (Macmillan Computer Science) / Palgrave Macmillan:

The chief aim of this book is to establish a theoretical basis of database design, focusing in particular on the relational database as model. The book is divided into four parts. The chapters of Part 1 introduce the concepts required for the modelling of data. Part 2 examines the problems encountered when embarking on a design and puts forward some solutions for transforming the relational model of an application into an internal data structure. Part 3 tackles more complex problems, such as data redundancy, integrity rules and cyclic data structures. Here, the solutions put forward lead to operational results that are founded on known mechanisms, such as the decomposition of a relation, but also on new mechanisms which are described in part 4.

Review Database Modeling and Design: Logical Design, Fourth Edition (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Data Management Systems) / Morgan Kaufmann:

Database systems and database design technology have undergone significant evolution in recent years. The relational data model and relational database systems dominate business applications; in turn, they are extended by other technologies like data warehousing, OLAP, and data mining. How do you model and design your database application in consideration of new technology or new business needs? In the extensively revised fourth edition, you'll get clear explanations, lots of terrific examples and an illustrative case, and the really practical advice you have come to count on-with design rules that are applicable to any SQL-based system. But you'll also get plenty to help you grow from a new database designer to an experienced designer developing industrial-sized systems. + a detailed look at the Unified Modeling Language (UML-2) as well as the entity-relationship (ER) approach for data requirements specification and conceptual modeling-with examples throughout the book in both approaches! + the details and examples of how to use data modeling concepts in logical database design, and the transformation of the conceptual model to the relational model and to SQL syntax; + the fundamentals of database normalization through the fifth normal form;+ practical coverage of the major issues in business intelligence-data warehousing, OLAP for decision support systems, and data mining; + examples for how to use the most popular CASE tools to handle complex data modeling problems. + Exercises that test understanding of all material, plus solutions for many exercises.

This book places a strong emphasis on good design practice, allowing readers to master design methodology in an accessible, step-by-step fashion. In this book, database design methodology is explicitly divided into three phases: conceptual, logical, and physical. Each phase is described in a separate chapter with an example of the methodology working in practice. Extensive treatment of the Web as an emerging platform for database applications is covered alongside many code samples for accessing databases from the Web including JDBC, SQLJ, ASP, ISP, and Oracle's PSP. A thorough update of later chapters covering object-oriented databases, Web databases, XML, data warehousing, data mining is included in this new edition. A clear introduction to design implementation and management issues, as well as an extensive treatment of database languages and standards, make this book an indispensable, complete reference for database professionals.

Review Agency and the Semantic Web / Oxford University Press, USA:

This highly topical text considers the construction of the next generation of the Web, called the Semantic Web. This will enable computers to automatically consume Web-based information, overcoming the human-centric focus of the Web as it stands at present, and expediting the construction of a whole new class of knowledge-based applications that will intelligently utilize Web content. The text is structured into three main sections on knowledge representation techniques, reasoning with multi-agent systems, and knowledge services. For each of these topics, the text provides an overview of the state-of-the-art techniques and the popular standards that have been defined. Numerous small programming examples are given, which demonstrate how the benefits of the Semantic Web technologies can be realized at the present time. The main theoretical results underlying each of the technologies are presented, and the main problems and research issues which remain are summarized. Based on a course on 'Multi-Agent Systems and the Semantic Web' taught at the University of Edinburgh, this text is ideal for final-year undergraduate and graduate students in Mathematics, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Logic and researchers interested in Multi-Agent Systems and the Semantic Web.

Review McGraw Hill Higher Education / Data Structures and the Standard Template Library Publication date: 2002-01-31

Review Data Structures and the Standard Template Library / McGraw Hill Higher Education:

"Data Structures and the Standard Template Library" by William Collins teaches the fundamentals of Data Structures and their implementations. It uses C++ as the language of instruction. Most of the data structures are provided in the Standard Template Library (STL), which students will be able to use in their further coursework and beyond. To further students' understanding of implementation issues, alternative implementation (other than the STL) are also discussed. Hands-on learning is promoted throughout the text by the use of Programming Projects and labs. Programming projects, at the end of each chapter, allow students to develop and implement their own data structures or to extend or apply data structures introduced in the chapter. Additionally, optional labs accompany the text and allow students to practice by giving them opportunities to code. These labs can be used in many different ways such as in a closed lab, in an open lab, or for optional homework assignments.
