Review Application of Petri Nets to Communication Networks / Springer:Petri nets offer a mathematically defined technique for the specification, design, analysis, verification and performance evaluation of concurrent distributed systems. They offer not only precise semantics and a theoretical foundation, but also a graphical form that facilitates the understanding of both information and control flow within the same formalism. As an intuitively appealing graphical form of presentation, Petri nets are the model of choice in various applications. Communications networks, ranging from traditional telecommunication systems to advanced Internet-based information services, are inherently distributed and comprise systems with concurrently operating components. This volume presents a selection of the latest advances in the use of Petri nets for the modeling, analysis and management of communication networks and systems in the broadest sense of these terms.

Review Modeling with Data: Tools and Techniques for Scientific Computing / Princeton University Press:Modeling with Data fully explains how to execute computationally intensive analyses on very large data sets, showing readers how to determine the best methods for solving a variety of different problems, how to create and debug statistical models, and how to run an analysis and evaluate the results. Ben Klemens introduces a set of open and unlimited tools, and uses them to demonstrate data management, analysis, and simulation techniques essential for dealing with large data sets and computationally intensive procedures. He then demonstrates how to easily apply these tools to the many threads of statistical technique, including classical, Bayesian, maximum likelihood, and Monte Carlo methods. Klemens's accessible survey describes these models in a unified and nontraditional manner, providing alternative ways of looking at statistical concepts that often befuddle students. The book includes nearly one hundred sample programs of all kinds. Links to these programs will be available on this page at a later date. Modeling with Data will interest anyone looking for a comprehensive guide to these powerful statistical tools, including researchers and graduate students in the social sciences, biology, engineering, economics, and applied mathematics.

Review The Enterprise Architecture IT Project / Butterworth-Heinemann:The basis for an Enterprise Architecture IT project comes from the identification of the changes necessary to implement the enterprise or organisation's strategy, and the growing information needs arising from this, which increases the demand for the development of the IT system. The development of an IT system can be carried out using an urbanisation approach i. e. building an IT system using the metaphor of a city. This concept is based on the fact that in constructing or reorganising information systems, the reconstruction and modernisation involves permanent elements, as are found in a city. Although relatively new, this approach has been successfully employed in a number of projects over the past few years. The practical approach given in this book allows enterprises or organisations trying to safeguard the efficiency of their IT system, while minimising costs and risk, to implement the theory and put it into practice.

Internet/Web, and HCI) / Springer:This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed proceedings of the Second GeoSensor Networks Conference, held in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, in October 2006. The conference addressed issues related to the collection, management, processing, analysis, and delivery of real-time geospatial data using distributed geosensor networks. This represents an evolution of the traditional static and centralized geocomputational paradigm. The 13 carefully reviewed and selected papers included in the volume constitute extended versions of the papers presented at the conference. They are preceded by an introduction written by the volume editors. The book is structured in sections on Data Acquisition and Processing, Data Analysis and Integration, and Applications. The papers represent key research areas that are fundamental in order to realize the full potential of the emerging geosensor network paradigm. The contributions cover theentire spectrum of the field from low-level energy consumption issues at the individual sensor level to the high-level abstraction of events and ontologies or models to recognize and monitor phenomena using geosensor networks.

Review Directory Services: Design, Implementation and Management / Digital Press:To optimally design and manage a directory service, IS architects and managers must understand current state-of-the-art products. Directory Services covers Novell's NDS eDirectory, Microsoft's Active Directory, UNIX directories and products by NEXOR, MaxWare, Siemens, Critical Path and others. Directory design fundamentals and products are woven into case studies of large enterprise deployments. Cox thoroughly explores replication, security, migration and legacy system integration and interoperability. Business issues such as how to cost justify, plan, budget and manage a directory project are also included. The book culminates in a visionary discussion of future trends and emerging directory technologies including the strategic direction of the top directory products, the impact of wireless technology on directory enabled applications and using directories to customize content delivery from the Enterprise Portal. Directory Services is a comprehensive and practical guide that provides organizations and consultants with a roadmap used to create the directory enabled global enterprise. To provide the reader with the core knowledge required for designing directory services, the book discusses directory fundamentals including X. 500, X. 509 and LDAP as well as how to cost justify, plan, budget and manage a directory projectProvides critical info for design, integration, or migration for multiple messaging platformsCovers all major directories Provides case studies and guidelines for deployment and integration issues X. [+]
500, Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), and their proprietary relatives-Microsoft Active Directory and Novell NDS eDirectory-are changing the way organizations structure their computer systems. They make it easier to achieve truly distributed computing, in which individual users' rights to access data and devices can be managed centrally, and apparently unified file systems can be spread across global networks. Directory Services: Design, Implementation and Management provides a so-so take on its title subject, giving its readers an overview-albeit a sometimes muddled one-of directory services, their advantages, and the risks involved in deploying them. The problem with this slender book is that it attempts to stuff too much information into its prose and illustrations. Too many diagrams are festivals of shapes and arrows, which are referred to in text spread across multiple pages and thus very hard to decipher. It also suffers from the curse of too many writers: no fewer than seven people collaborated on the 295 pages that make up this book. What's more, though it's good that the book covers solutions from both Novell and Microsoft, there's no feature comparison of the two or analysis of the sorts of business situations into which each fits best. Look elsewhere for better coverage of directory services. -David Wall Topics covered: Directory services, in terms of standards-LDAP and X. 500-and in terms of proprietary offerings from Microsoft and Novell. Each section defines terms, sketches key operational details, and explains the processes followed in finding information and making security decisions.

The new edition provides improved coverage of concepts, extensive coverage of new tools and techniques, and updated coverage of database system internals. This text is intended for a first course in databases at the junior or senior undergraduate, or first-year graduate level. Database System Concepts, 4th ed. offers a complete background in the basics of database design, languages, and system implementations. Concepts are presented using intuitive descriptions, and important theoretical results are covered, but formal proofs are omitted. The fundamental concepts and algorithms covered in Database System Concepts 4th ed. are based on those used in existing commercial or experimental database systems. The authors present these concepts and algorithms in a general setting that is not tied to one particular database system.

Review Generic Model Management: Concepts and Algorithms (Lecture Notes in Computer Science) / Springer:Many challenging problems in information systems engineering involve the manipulation of complex metadata artifacts or models, such as database schema, interface specifications, or object diagrams, and mappings between models. Applications solving metadata manipulation problems are complex and hard to build. The goal of generic model management is to reduce the amount of programming needed to solve such problems by providing a database infrastructure in which a set of high-level algebraic operators are applied to models and mappings as a whole rather than to their individual building blocks. This book presents a systematic study of the concepts and algorithms for generic model management. The first prototype of a generic model management system is described, the algebraic operators are introduced and analyzed, and novel algorithms for implementing them are developed. Using the prototype system and the operators presented, solutions are developed for several practically relevant problems, such as change propagation and reintegration.
