Review Temporal Databases: Research and Practice (Lecture Notes in Computer Science) / Springer:This book grew out of a Dagstuhl seminar organized by the volume editors in June 1997. After the seminar, submissions for this book were solicited both from and beyond the group of participants. A peer review process followed, from which only original papers of the highest quality on the state of the art in the field were accepted for presentation in the book. The volume is divided into parts on temporal database infrastructure, temporal query languages, and advanced applications. A comprehensive bibliography, glossaries for both temporal database and time granularity concepts, and summaries of current work are also provided. The book is the ultimate reference for anyone actively involved in temporal database research and design or who is interested in their applications.

Review Logical and Relational Learning (Cognitive Technologies) / Springer:This textbook covers logical and relational learning in depth, and hence provides an introduction to inductive logic programming (ILP), multirelational data mining (MRDM) and (statistical) relational learning (SRL). These subfields of data mining and machine learning are concerned with the analysis of complex and structured data sets that arise in numerous applications, such as bio- and chemoinformatics, network analysis, Web mining, and natural language processing, within the rich representations offered by relational databases and computational logic. The author introduces the machine learning and representational foundations of the field and explains some important techniques in detail by using some of the classic case studies centered around well-known logical and relational systems. The book is suitable for use in graduate courses and should be of interest to graduate students and researchers in computer science, databases and artificial intelligence, as well as practitioners of data mining and machine learning. It contains numerous figures and exercises, and slides are available for many chapters.

Review MySQL / Apress:Unmistakably, the advent of Open Source technologies has made a considerable impact upon the IT sector in recent years. Perhaps the repercussions of this impact resonate no more loudly than in the database sector, where Open Source databasing products offer users a comparable alternative to the costly commercial solutions available on the market today. One such Open Source database enjoying enormous popularity is MySQL. Offering very fast and reliable data management, MySQL has come to be depended on by a number of the World's largest and most respected organizations for handling mission critical information. In a successful effort to tackling those issues most important to the reader, Kofler not only concentrates on the MySQL database server itself, but also demonstrates how it can be used in conjunction with various other technologies in order to Web-enable the reader's database information. Kofler's MySQL introduces the many facets of MySQL, guiding the reader through installation, configuration, and subsequent implementation of the popular database server. Intermingling MySQL instruction with valuable general database design philosophy, MySQL proves to be an irreplaceable resource for MySQL novices and experts alike. Michael Kofler earned his Ph. D. in Computer Science at Graz Technical University. [+]
He has written a number of successful computer books on topics such as Visual Basic, Linux, Mathematica, and Maple. Kofler is also the author of the recently published Apress title, Definitive Guide to Excel VBA.

Review Metaclasses and Their Application: Data Model Tailoring and Database Integration (Lecture Notes in Computer Science) / Springer:Conventional object-oriented data models are closed: although they allow users to define application-specific classes, they usually come with a fixed set of modelling primitives. This constitutes a major problem, as different application domains, e. g. database integration or multimedia, need special support. Using an extended metaclass concept, this book provides for the solution of this problem a simple but extendible open object-oriented data model, a so-called RISC model. By introducing the basic concepts of the open object-oriented database management system VODAK, it demonstrates how the extended metaclass concept can be integrated homogeneously into object-oriented data models.

Review Interactive Relational Database Design: A Logic Programming Implementation (Lecture Notes in Computer Science) / Springer:Relational databases have quickly come to be regarded as a natural and efficient way of organizing information. Duplicate data can be eliminated and powerful set-theoretic operations can be used to manipulate data. But finding the right relations for a database is not yet a trivial step for the uninitiated. This book presents a comprehensive logic programming implementation of the relational design methodology. It employs TURBO Prolog to test and establish computational viability of the relevant algorithms. It also presents the expert system prototype of a user interface, designed especially for builders of computerized databases who may have no formal training in database design.

Review An Extended Entity-Relationship Model: Fundamentals and Pragmatics (Lecture Notes in Computer Science) / Springer:This text presents a comprehensive introduction to an extended Entity-Relationship model both on a conceptual and on a formal, mathematicallevel. In addition to the primitives given by the data model the text introduces a language for the formulation of constraints in order to restrict database states to consistent ones. The text explains an implementation of the approach chosen in the logic programing language PROLOG and discusses in this context the computational power of the proposedcalculus. The extended Entity-Relationship calculus is used to define the meaning of the relational query language SQL. A nice feature of the approach is that it becomes possible to prove language properties on a sound mathematical basis.
