Review Conceptual Modeling for Traditional and Spatio-Temporal Applications: The MADS Approach / Springer:From environmental management to land planning and geo-marketing, the number of application domains that may greatly benefit from using data enriched with spatio-temporal features is expanding very rapidly. Unfortunately, development of new spatio-temporal applications is hampered by the lack of conceptual design methods suited to cope with the additional complexity of spatio-temporal data. This complexity is obviously due to the particular semantics of space and time, but also to the need for multiple representations of the same reality to address the diversity of requirements from highly heterogeneous user communities. Conceptual design methods are also needed to facilitate the exchange and reuse of existing data sets, a must in geographical data management due to the high collection costs of the data. Yet, current practice in areas like geographical information systems or moving objects databases does not include conceptual design methods very well, if at all. This book shows that a conceptual design approach for spatio-temporal databases is both feasible and easy to apprehend. While providing a firm basis through extensive discussion of traditional data modeling concepts, the major focus of the book is on modeling spatial and temporal information. Parent, Spaccapietra and Zimányi provide a detailed and comprehensive description of an approach that fills the gap between application conceptual requirements and system capabilities, covering both data modeling and data manipulation features. The ideas presented summarize several years of research on the characteristics and description of space, time, and perception. In addition to the authors' own data modeling approach, MADS (Modeling of Application Data with Spatio-temporal features), the book also surveys alternative data models and approaches (from industry and academia) that target support of spatio-temporal modeling. [+]
The reader will acquire intimate knowledge of both the traditional and innovative features that form a consistent data modeling approach. Visual notations and examples are employed extensively to illustrate the use of the various constructs. Therefore, this book is of major importance and interest to advanced professionals, researchers, and graduate or post-graduate students in the areas of spatio-temporal databases and geographical information systems. "For anyone thinking of doing research in this field, or who is developing a system based on spatio-temporal data, this text is essential reading. " (Mike Worboys, U Maine, Orono, ME, USA) "The high-level semantic model presented and validated in this book provides essential guidance to researchers and implementers when improving the capabilities of data systems to serve the actual needs of applications and their users in the temporal and spatial domains that are so prevalent today. " (Gio Wiederhold, Stanford U, CA, USA).

Review Deadline Scheduling for Real-Time Systems - EDF and Related Algorithms (The International Series in Engineering and Computer Science) / Springer:Many real-time systems rely on static scheduling algorithms. This includes cyclic scheduling, rate monotonic scheduling and fixed schedules created by off-line scheduling techniques such as dynamic programming, heuristic search, and simulated annealing. However, for many real-time systems, static scheduling algorithms are quite restrictive and inflexible. For example, highly automated agile manufacturing, command, control and communications, and distributed real-time multimedia applications all operate over long lifetimes and in highly non-deterministic environments. Dynamic real-time scheduling algorithms are more appropriate for these systems and are used in such systems. Many of these algorithms are based on earliest deadline first (EDF) policies. There exists a wealth of literature on EDF-based scheduling with many extensions to deal with sophisticated issues such as precedence constraints, resource requirements, system overload, multi-processors, and distributed systems. Deadline Scheduling for Real-Time Systems: EDF and Related Algorithms aims at collecting a significant body of knowledge on EDF scheduling for real-time systems, but it does not try to be all-inclusive (the literature is too extensive). The book primarily presents the algorithms and associated analysis, but guidelines, rules, and implementation considerations are also discussed, especially for the more complicated situations where mathematical analysis is difficult. In general, it is very difficult to codify and taxonomize scheduling knowledge because there are many performance metrics, task characteristics, and system configurations. [+]
Also, adding to the complexity is the fact that a variety of algorithms have been designed for different combinations of these considerations. In spite of the recent advances there are still gaps in the solution space and there is a need to integrate the available solutions. For example, a list of issues to consider includes: + preemptive versus non-preemptive tasks, + uni-processors versus multi-processors, + using EDF at dispatch time versus EDF-based planning, + precedence constraints among tasks, + resource constraints, + periodic versus aperiodic versus sporadic tasks, + scheduling during overload, + fault tolerance requirements, and + providing guarantees and levels of guarantees (meeting quality of service requirements). Deadline Scheduling for Real-Time Systems: EDF and Related Algorithms should be of interest to researchers, real-time system designers, and instructors and students, either as a focussed course on deadline-based scheduling for real-time systems, or, more likely, as part of a more general course on real-time computing. The book serves as an invaluable reference in this fast-moving field.

Review Intelligent Data Warehousing: From Data Preparation to Data Mining / CRC:Effective decision support systems (DSS) are quickly becoming key to businesses gaining a competitive advantage, and the effectiveness of these systems depends on the ability to construct, maintain, and extract information from data warehouses. While many still perceive data warehousing as a subdiscipline of management information systems (MIS), in fact many of its advances have and will continue to come from the computer science arena. Intelligent Data Warehousing presents the state of the art in data warehousing research and practice from a perspective that integrates business applications and computer science. It brings the intelligent techniques associated with artificial intelligence (AI) to the entire process of data warehousing, including data preparation, storage, and mining. Part I provides an overview of the main ideas and fundamentals of data mining, artificial intelligence, business intelligence, and data warehousing. Part II presents core materials on data warehousing, and Part III explores data analysis and knowledge discovery in the data warehousing environment, including how to perform intelligent data analysis and the discovery of influential association patterns. Bridging the gap between theoretical research and business applications, this book summarizes the main ideas behind recent research developments rather than setting forth technical details, and it presents case studies that show the how-to's of implementing these ideas. The result is a practical, first-of-its-kind book that brings together scattered research, unites MIS with computer science, and melds intelligent techniques with data warehousing.

Review The Semantic Web: Crafting Infrastructure for Agency / Wiley:The Semantic Web is an idea of World Wide Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee that the Web as a whole can be made more intelligent and perhaps even intuitive about how to serve a users needs. Although search engines index much of the Web's content, they have little ability to select the pages that a user really wants or needs. Berners-Lee foresees a number of ways in which developers and authors, singly or in collaborations, can use self-descriptions and other techniques so that the context-understanding programs can selectively find what users want. The Semantic Web: Crafting Infrastructure for Agency presents a more holistic view of the current state of development and deployment. This a comprehensive reference to the rapidly developing technologies, which are enabling more intelligent and automated transactions over the internet, and a visionary overview of the implications of deploying such a layer of infrastructure. A through examination of the Semantic Web, including the following topics: web information management, languages and protocols, application and tools, and collaboration and agency. A unique volume of practical information, in-depth analysis, conceptual overviews and contextual material from professionals in the field. Features appendices of technical terms and glossary, Semantic Web resources, intellectual property issues and lists of elements. This is essential reading for engineers, web developers and industry professionals wishing to enhance their knowledge of recent developments. Management staff, lecturers. [+]
