Review Sweet and Savoury Snacks in Austria:Petrol/gas/service stations is one of the most important convenience retailers in Austria. Products in sweet and savoury snacks are often bought on impulse and are offered in smaller packaging through petrol/gas/service stations. The problem is that this retail channel cannot offer the whole range of products and new products are mostly stocked in place of classical products or flavours. Nevertheless, convenience stores continued to benefit in 2003. With in-depth analysis of the latest trends in the sweet and savoury snacks market, this report is part of a series of 52 individual country reports providing essential strategic data. Use these studies to assess the impact of new products; anticipate new retailing trends and measure brand and market shares.

Review Spreads in Greece:Volume sales of spreads in Greece are expected to reach 37,367 tonnes in 2002, up 1. 9% on the previous year. Value sales, on the other hand, are expected to increase by 4% in 2002, to stand at EUR257 million. Spreads is by no means immature in Greece, neither is it fully mature. Industry sources indicate that there is still room for further growth as Greeks are gradually becoming familiar with eating a Northern European-style breakfast, with spreads on bread tending to be more popular with adults and children than cereals with milk. Spreads is just one of the 19 sectors researched by Euromonitor in its Packaged Food series of reports. All include market and brand share data, new product development trends and retail distribution analysis. Forecasts to 2007 can help you to identify opportunities in your sector and to predict sales trends. Each sector report taken from a wider Packaged Food title includes a summary of packaged food developments in addition to sector analysis.

Review Meal Replacement Products in Colombia / MarketResearch.com:Slimming product prices decreased over the review period. This was as a result of special offers, mainly through television sales, and the introduction of products with lower prices from domestic pharmaceutical laboratories. In contrast, convalescent drink prices increased above the inflation rate over the review period, as these products are not manufactured in Colombia. Domestic firms are yet to launch convalescent drinks that can compete with imported international brands. In terms of constant value, slimming products had a negative growth of 28% during the review period. Although volume sales increased with the advent of locally produced products, their lower prices were not able to sustain growth in constant value terms. Despite lower prices and a growing popularity among consumers, only high-income consumers tend to purchase slimming products.

Review Baby Food in Turkey / MarketResearch.com:Sales of baby food are forecast to reach US$47. 3 million in 2003, up 2% in value terms on the previous year, but down almost 3% over the review period as a whole. The baby food sector saw a decline of some 3% in value sales in 2001 on the previous year. This decline was then followed by an even sharper decrease in sales in 2002. Value sales of baby food dropped by more than 12% in 2002. The economic crisis that hit Turkey at the beginning of 2001 was the main reason for these falls. After the economic crisis, many people were made redundant during 2001, others had to agree to 40% salary cuts. The reason for the higher decreases in 2002 was the increasing number of people that had lost their jobs during 2001 and the realisation by consumers that the effects of the economic crisis would last longer than had been expected in the immediate aftermath of the crisis. Another important reason was the political crisis in 2002, which adversely affected economic conditions. Until the beginning of November 2002, the economy was characterised by instability caused by the unstable political conditions.

Review Bakery Products in Egypt / MarketResearch.com:Breakfast cereals are witnessing the most dynamic performance within bakery products with 12% current value growth expected in 2003. However sales are small at an estimated E£22. 2 million and meagre volume sales of 532 tons in 2003. Bad volume growth performance has been due to further currency devaluation over 2003 that has led to price hikes on all imported goods and some locally manufactured goods. As breakfast cereals tend to be imported, prices rose dramatically from E£35. 42 per kilo in 2002 to E£41. 73 per kilo in 2002. Children’s breakfast cereals also saw price hikes despite very high prices already, from E£41. 03 per kilo in 2002 to E£44. 93 per kilo in 2003.

Review Confectionery in Belgium / MarketResearch.com:Toffees, caramels and nougat sales reached EUR34 million in 2002, an improvement of over 3% in constant value terms on the previous year. The products are long established in Belgium but lacked promotion and innovation at the start of the review period. The latest innovations such as Lonka soft caramels - the first sugar confectionery product in a vertical-standing sachet - and, to a lower extent, Crypto from Continental Sweets helped to galvanise sales. After the good performance of Werther’s Original, Toffifee by Storck, strongly advertised on TV in 2002, is expected in 2003 to reach the same level of success in Belgium than in Germany. Nougat was a less important part of toffees, caramels and nougat and comprised mainly French nougat products in individual packaging and a restricted number of Spanish products.

Review Dairy Products in Turkey / MarketResearch.com:Dairy product sales are expected to reach US$4,997 million in 2003, increasing by nearly 7% on the previous year. This will mainly be a reflection of the recovery of the economy from the economic crises that hit the country in 2001. Apart from the recovery of the economy, the new product launches and heavy advertisement campaigns launched by the leading companies in 2002 and 2003 also fuelled the growth.

Review Pasta in Thailand / MarketResearch.com:Sales of pasta in Thailand remain at a low level due to sluggish demand and low product awareness. In 2002, sales of pasta reached a value of Bt21. 4 million, following current value growth of 2%. A similar pattern is expected to continue in 2003 when pasta is expected to reach a value of only Bt21. 8 million following a further 2% growth in current terms. There are no significant sales of chilled/fresh pasta or canned pasta in Thailand as demand is low and unit prices are very high. Hence dried pasta accounts for virtually 100% of sales.

Review Oils and Fats in Netherlands / MarketResearch.com:Cooking fats, with sales valued at EUR37. 1 million in 2003, are expected to grow by 1. 9% in value and 2. 2% in volume during this year. Higher value than volume performance was created by the strong promotion of new formats such as liquid cooking fats. Unilever intensively promoted liquid products of well-known brands such as Blue Band Culinesse, Croma and Becel. Dutch consumers appreciated the convenience of these products, considering the fact that margarine or butter is commonly used to bake meats. A major boost for sales of higher priced liquid formats started in 2003 with a campaign for liquid margarine, regarded as a healthier alternative than regular products.

Review Dairy Products in Colombia / MarketResearch.com:As Colombians’ shopping habits evolve, they tend to rely more heavily on shelf-stable products. This is the case of long-life/UHT milk which can be stored up to six months without refrigeration offering a very significant advantage for households which cannot buy fresh milk everyday and prefer to do all their shopping every fortnight. This is basically the case of high- and middle-income groups which have the means to buy a more expensive type of milk, and usually by the dozen. Penetration of long-life/UHT milk is still expected to be limited in 2003 due to its price difference with fresh/pasteurised milk. Additionally, strongly rooted traditions about the importance of consuming fresh milk have also stopped the further penetration of UHT products. Long-life bags and Tetra Pak technology were introduced only recently in the Colombian market and used in alcoholic drinks, some juices and dairy products.
