Edition: 1
Publication date: 2009-02-28
Dewey code: 004
List Price: $50.00
Price: $50.00

Review ICT4D: Information and Communication Technology for Development / Cambridge University Press:

ICT4D provides an authoritative and accessible account of the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in contemporary development practice. It combines theory with practical guidance - including both a conceptual framework for understanding the rapid development of ICT4D, and practitioners' overviews of the use of ICTs in enterprise, health, governance, education and rural development. Boxed case studies provide detailed examples of issues and initiatives from a wide variety of countries and organisations. ICTs are becoming increasingly significant in making a difference and improving the impacts of development practice. However, ICT4D projects in Africa, Asia and Latin America have not always been as effective as their proponents had hoped. This book explores both the successes and the challenges facing such initiatives, and provides clear recommendations for how they can be developed in more sustainable ways for the benefit of poor people and marginalised communities. ICT4D is essential reading for anyone involved in planning, designing or implementing ICT4D initiatives.

Dewey code: 629
List Price: $64.00
Price: $62.43

Review Robotic Recall: Designing Cognitive Robotic Systems Using Working Memory / VDM Verlag Dr. Mueller e.K.:

The field of cognitive robotics attempts to design embodied artificial intelligence systems through inspiration from human psychology. Often in robotics it is assumed that, because hard drives are capable of holding massive amounts of data, a robot should store all information it comes across for use in generating future behaviors. This work shows how this brute-force approach to robotic memory management is flawed and proposes a memory management system based on the principles of John Anderson's ACT-R cognitive architecture. The creation and implementation of this memory system is detailed for a cognitive robot. Three types of memory systems are outlined and implemented for ISAC, a humanoid robot. An adaptive working memory system is also detailed to tie the memory systems to the cognitive control of the robot. Several experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of the new memory system and to demonstrate correct tuning. This book is addressed to robotic scientists as well as computational psychologists. It is intended to demonstrate some principles of memory design for any researcher studying embodied artificial intelligence.

Review VDM Verlag Dr. Mueller e.K. / Supervised Reinforcement Learning - Application to an Embodied Mobile Robot Publication date: 2007-09-12
List Price: $64.00
Price: $61.32

Review Supervised Reinforcement Learning - Application to an Embodied Mobile Robot / VDM Verlag Dr. Mueller e.K.:

Can machines be taught? If so, what methods are useful for teaching machines? Machine learning is a field focused on systems that can learn through their own experiences and evaluation. Programmers could encode all behaviors for a task, but this process quickly becomes limited to condensed problems. Therefore, scientists have turned to methods with adaptability, taking cues from biological systems (including the human brain) to solve more complex problems in varied environments. This book describes two experiments implementing supervised reinforcement learning on a real, mobile robot. One tests the robot's reliability in completing a navigation task it has been taught by a supervisor. The other, in which obstacles are placed along the path to the goal, measures the robot's robustness to changes in environment. Experimental analysis answered: How quickly can the robot find the goal? How much reward does the robot amass? How often does the robot fail in the task? How closely does the robot match the supervisor's actions? This book is addressed to those looking for means to teach robots about rewards/punishments, such as researchers in Robotics, Machine Learning, and Engineering.

Review BRADY GAMES / Official Guide to Fallout (Official Strategy Guides) Publication date: 1997-10-28
Dewey code: 794
Price: $19.99

Review Official Guide to Fallout (Official Strategy Guides) / BRADY GAMES:

This guide provides walkthroughs for individual quests, information on enemies, mutants and friendly characters, and strategies for tactical warfare for players of the "Fallout" computer game. One of the great role-playing games of the decade, Interplay's Fallout is a single-character game with Diablo-style graphics and classic RPG (role-playing game) gameplay. With the 1998 E3 conference debut of Fallout 2, this game is right back in the spotlight. If you're just picking up the game for the first time-or even if you're giving it another go-this exceptionally well-written book will come in handy. The book offers varying degrees of guidance, so that it doesn't automatically give away any secrets you'd rather learn on your own. You can read a complete, quick-and-dirty walk-through of the entire game, skim the less-specific hints for each location and quest, or dive into a more literary description of the game: a well-written diary that walks you through every step of the way. As you might expect, the book offers a complete listing of the game's objects, locations, and characters. The screen shots help to illustrate key points while the great illustrations help to set that mixed 1950s/postapocalyptic mood. To cap things off, humorous and helpful tips from "Ol' Slim," the old-time adventurer, are scattered throughout the book. -Michael Ryan.
