Review Reading Comics: Language, Culture, and the Concept of the Superhero in Comic Books (Garland Studies in American Popular History and Culture) / Routledge:

This study explores how the definition of the medium, as well as its language, readership, genre conventions, and marketing and distribution strategies, have kept comic books within the realm of popular culture. Since comics have been studied mostly in relation to mass media and its influence on society, there is a void in the analysis of the critical issues related to comics as a distinct genre and art form. By focusing on comics as narratives and investigating their formal and structural aspects, as well as the unique reading process they demand, this study presents a unique contribution to the current literature on comics, and helps clarify concepts and definitions useful in studying the medium. (Ph. D. dissertation, University of Alberta, 1995; revised with new preface, bibliography, and index).

Estela, un convoy constituido por miles de naves y razas diferentes, atraviesa la inmensidad del espacio en busca de planetas habitables. Antes o despues tenian que acabar topando con un ser humano. by the thousands! A formidable convoy launched in search of new livable planets. A convoy named Wake upon which one can encounter all manner of races, intelligences, peoples but where one race remains as yet unknown: human beings. They are about to run into Navee, a feisty young girl shipwrecked on a lush uninhabited planet who’s grown up and fended entirely for herself. Review Monsters / Little, Brown:

Gerald Scarfe, Britain's most controversial satirical artist, is famous for having worked with a broad and eclectic mix of British and American icons, including Pink Floyd and Disney. But he is perhaps best known for his political cartoons, which have appeared in numerous newspapers and magazines, notably in the Sunday Times. Published to coincide with a major exhibition of the original artworks in the Houses of Parliament, this new book brings together fifty years of Scarfe's political drawings in a brilliantly entertaining journey through the history of our nation's leaders, from Churchill's last visit to the House of Commons in 1965 to the Thatcher years to Tony Blair's legacy and Gordon Brown's succession in 2007. With razor-sharp wit and exuberant energy, Scarfe's drawings lampoon our leaders' political ambitions, scandals and disasters in inimitable style.

Review Eclectic Abecedarium / Adama Books:

Edward Gorey's first miniature book, The Eclectic Abecedarium is an illustrated adventure through the English alphabet, accompanied by rhyming couplets penned by Gorey, who described his creations as "literary nonsense. " Inspired by popular moral primers for children, Gorey created an updated version of Isaac Watts's alphabetic aphorisms. Part sweet songs of unseen birds and part cautionary tales, this abecedarium fully lives up to the epithet "eclectic. ".

Review Tintin in the Congo (The Adventures of Tintin) / Little, Brown Young Readers:

Little, Brown is celebrating 100 years of Hergé with 3 titles never before published in the U. S. Join traveling reporter Tintin and his faithful dog Snowy, along with well-known friends such as Captain Haddock, as they embark on an extraordinary adventures spanning historical and political events, fantasy and science-fiction adventures and thrilling mysteries. These full-color graphic novels broke new ground when they were first released and became the inspiration for countless modern-day comic artists. (Note: this particular title, one of three originally unpublished in the U. S. , may be considered somewhat controversial, as it reflects the colonial attitudes of the time it was created. Herge depicts African people according to the stereotypes of the time period, but in this edition it will be contextualized for the reader in an explanatory preface. ) In Tintin in the Congo, one of his earliest adventures, our intrepid reporter hunts down both criminals and wild game. The story was written in 1930 and first appeared in book form in 1931, and some of the parts are so dated that for years the book was unavailable in English. [+]
This edition reprints on black-and-white newsprint the original 1931 version. In one scene, Tintin tells a group of African children "Today, I'm going to talk to you about your country: Belgium!" When the story was updated and colorized (but not translated into English) in 1946, this became a simple lesson in addition. In addition to the colonial attitude, the Africans are portrayed as primitive, simple-minded folk ("He doesn't look very bright," Snowy opines about their guide), and Tintin reveals a brutal side by slaughtering half the wildlife on the continent (including blowing up a rhinoceros with dynamite!) and declaring while pursuing an enemy, "Sure as my name's Tintin, I'll get rid of him once and for all. " Herge himself was embarrassed by much of Tintin in the Congo, and it's not a part of the regular canon, but fans who can accept it as a product of its time will enjoy seeing their hero in one more adventure, one that provides a jumping-off point for the much-better-known Tintin in America. -David Horiuchi.

Review The Complete Far Side Leather-Bound Set [Signed Limited Edition] / Andrews McMeel Publishing:

A masterpiece of comic brilliance and a must-have treasure for any Gary Larson fan! The Complete Far Side limited-edition book and lithograph set contains every Far Side cartoon ever syndicated (over 4,000 of them) in a numbered, two-volume, 1,272-page book set and a limited-edition lithograph print, both signed by Gary Larson. Only 2,000 copies of this incredible package have been produced. Printed on glossy, specially milled, archival quality paper and bound in fine burgundy leather, the book set comes protected in a beautiful clamshell box that is covered and lined with Japanese cloth and emblazoned with gold foil-framed, full-color insets. The matted and framed 19 1/2" by 24" full-color limited-edition lithograph of one of Larson's well-known cartoons, Wendell. I'm Not Content, is also signed by the artist and bears the same number as the limited-edition book set. About The Far Side® Revered by fans as the funniest, most original, most "What the. [+]
?"-inspiring cartoon ever, The Far Side last appeared over nine years ago and still boasts millions of rabid devotees. During its 14-year run, the cartoon was syndicated internationally in more than 1,900 daily newspapers, translated into 17 different languages, and spawned 22 Far Side books. The Complete Far Side contains every Far Side cartoon ever syndicated-more than 4,000 comic gems, with more than 1,100 that have never previously appeared in book form! Also included is a rare glimpse into the mind of Far Side creator Gary Larson, with his quirky and thoughtful introductions to each of the 14 chapters. Still want more? Complaint letters, fan letters, and queries from puzzled readers round out this eclectic and definitive collection of what many people consider the most side-splitting cartoon of all time. Actor, author, and comedian Steve Martin writes the delightful and pithy foreword, and Larson's former editor describes what it was like to be "the guy who could explain every Far Side cartoon. " It's everything you could want from The Far Side-and much, much more! Gary Larson calls The Complete Far Side, the massive two-volume collection of his Far Side cartoons, an "18-pound hernia giver. " Sure to give any coffee table a solid workout, the handsome and heavy 1,272-page "legacy book" is a must for fervent fans; over 4,300 single-panel comics with more than half in color and 1,100 that have not appeared in any book form before (the popular-and far less weighty-paperback collections). Set in rough chronological order, the comics share pages with occasional letters from fans, detractors, editors, folks made famous by a particular cartoon, and those begging for explanations. Though few explanations are provided (Larson personally supplies merely one, plus a single apology), this collection helps answer the inevitable "how do you think up these things" conundrum. Before each year's cartoons, Larson provides insight with essays about his childhood, various travels, occupational hazards, and his official rules for dealing with bedtime monsters (which often turned out to be his older brother). Most wonderful is the first essay on how the comic started. (His longtime editor Jake Morrissey's long introduction is a must read on The Far Side's story). Despite no central characters, it's easy to spot patterns in Larson's wild and wacky cartoons. Animals, insects, and inanimate objects often exhibit all-too-human impulses. Larson's subjects are often in scenes of peril-disasters, visits to hell, and perhaps a hundred cartoons set on a one-palm tree deserted island. It is what Larson's fertile imagination mined from those situations that created fans and enemies for 14 years. (Larson retired at his peak and then went into jazz music). The comics are not indexed (how could they be-first lines? listings of cartoons with cows?); finding a favorite requires a great memory for its publication date. Best simply to peruse the pages of this beautiful collection in which you will certainly find more than a few new chuckles before landing on your beloved Larson sketch. -Doug Thomas.
