Review Red Rackham's Treasure (Adventures of Tintin) / French & European Pubns:Tintin, Captain Haddock, and their cartoon friends aboard the traveler Sirius embark on a perilous voyage in search of pirate treasure. Concluding the story begun in The Secret of the Unicorn, Red Rackham's Treasure follows Tintin and friends as they search for the pirate booty procured by Captain Haddock's ancestor, Sir Francis Haddock, in the West Indies. They receive some unexpected help in the form of a hard-of-hearing inventor named Professor Calculus, who would go on to become one of the most endearing characters of the series. (Herge admitted that the character was one "whom I never suspected would take on such importance. ") It's a lot of fun, with some submarine and diving adventures, humor from the Thompsons, and an unexpected (but satisfying) ending. -David Horiuchi.

Review Weird Fantasy Vol. 4 [No. 18-22] / Russ Cochran:Publisher William M. Gaines always preferred the science fiction Comics of all his publications. Even though modest sellers, he kept at least on title going from 1950 until the end in 1956. These Comics continue the dystopian view of man, formed by companion title Weird Science. They deal with man & his foibles as he attempts to visit & colonise space, interact with alien species or live with atomic weapons. Despite their pessimism, they are also imaginative and darkly humorous. From 1952 writer Ray Bradbury's stories were adapted & several are feature here. Other science fiction writers were also sampled without their knowledge, adding to the sophistication of stories on offer. Add into the mix some of the most beautiful visions of 1950s science fiction from artists Al Feldstein, Wally Wood, Al Williamson, Harvey Kurtzman, Joe Orlando, Jack Kamen & others. Weird Fantasy represents some of the finest science fiction stories ever illustrated.
