Eddie consoles Jeff, even though the other children say cruel things to him. When Eddie’s class is told about his father’s problem as a means of helping Eddie, he denies that anything is wrong, yet cannot keep it hidden when the story appears on the evening news on television. Jeff continues being Eddie’s friend, regardless of what happened. Through the lawyer appointed to handle his father’s case, Eddie learns about the legal process. He learns about bail, preliminary hearings, plea bargains, pre-sentence reports, and jail. He also learns how to turn a bad situation into a positive one.
