Review Influence of Climate Change on the Changing Arctic and Sub-Arctic Conditions (NATO Science for Peace and Security Series C: Environmental Security) / Springer:The current warming trends in the Arctic may shove the Arctic system into a seasonally ice-free state not seen for more than one million years. The melting is accelerating, and researchers were unable to identify natural processes that might slow the deicing of the Arctic. Such substantial additional melting of Arctic and Antarctic glaciers and ice sheets would raise the sea level worldwide, flooding the coastal areas where many of the world's population lives. Studies, led by scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and the University of Arizona, show that greenhouse gas increases over the next century could warm the Arctic by 3-5°C in summertime. Thus, Arctic summers by 2100 may be as warm as they were nearly 130,000 years ago, when sea levels eventually rose up to 6 m higher than today.

Review Unexploded Ordnance Detection and Mitigation (NATO Science for Peace and Security Series B: Physics and Biophysics) / Springer:The detection and neutralization of unexploded ordnance (UXO) has been of major concern for very many decades; at least since the First World War. UXO continues to be the subject of intensive research in many fields of science. While today's headlines emphasize the mayhem resulting from the placement of improvised explosive devices (IEDs), humanitarian landmine clearing continues to draw significant global attention as well. In many countries of the world, landmines threaten the population and hinder reconstruction and fast, efficient utilization of large areas of the mined land in the aftermath of military conflicts. The reports in this volume, written by world leaders from academia, Government and industry, describe how basic ideas from mathematics, radar, sonar and chemistry can be combined with ongoing improvements in hardware and computation, as well as very new advances in multisensor data fusion, to yield the promise of more sophisticated and accurate UXO detection and identification capabilities than currently exist.

Review Intelligence in Networking / Springer:Intelligence in Networks is a concept, the meaning of which is highly related to the time-period when it is used. In the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, it was mainly related to the teleservice repertoire `an sich'. In the 1990s, it is more related to efficient flexibility in the introduction of new teleservices and teleservice repertoire. This state-of-the-art text sets out to identify and study issues related to solutions for increasing intelligence in networks. As examples, intelligence networks (IN), telecommunication information networking architecture (TINA) and mobile agents and active networks are different solutions for improving the grade of network intelligence. The areas under discussion include research and development within various closely related fields such as: Teleservices, service architecture and service creation; Middleware and specification languages; Mobile agents, active networks, plug-and-play issues; and Quality of service and performance. £/LIST£ Intelligence in Networks contains the proceedings of SMARTNET'99, the fifth in a series of conferences on intelligence in networks sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP), at the Asian Institute of Technology, Pathumthani, Thailand in November 1999.

Review Reasoning in Boolean Networks: Logic Synthesis and Verification Using Testing Techniques (Frontiers in Electronic Testing) / Springer:Reasoning in Boolean Networks provides a detailed treatment of recent research advances in algorithmic techniques for logic synthesis, test generation and formal verification of digital circuits. The book presents the central idea of approaching design automation problems for logic-level circuits by specific Boolean reasoning techniques. While Boolean reasoning techniques have been a central element of two-level circuit theory for many decades Reasoning in Boolean Networks describes a basic reasoning methodology for multi-level circuits. This leads to a unified view on two-level and multi-level logic synthesis. The presented reasoning techniques are applied to various CAD-problems to demonstrate their usefulness for today's industrially relevant problems. Reasoning in Boolean Networks provides lucid descriptions of basic algorithmic concepts in automatic test pattern generation, logic synthesis and verification and elaborates their intimate relationship to provide further intuition and insight into the subject. Numerous examples are provide for ease in understanding the material. Reasoning in Boolean Networks is intended for researchers in logic synthesis, VLSI testing and formal verification as well as for integrated circuit designers who want to enhance their understanding of basic CAD methodologies.

Review Proceedings of the International Workshop on Computational Intelligence in Security for Information Systems CISIS 2008 (Advances in Intelligent and Soft Computing) / Springer:The International Workshop on Computational Intelligence for Security in Information Systems (CISIS) proposes a meeting ground to the various communities involved in building intelligent systems for security, namely: information security, data mining, adaptive learning methods and soft computing among others. The main goal is to allow experts and researchers to assess the benefits of learning methods in the data-mining area for information-security applications. The workshop offers the opportunity to interact with the leading industries actively involved in the critical area of security, and have a picture of the current solutions adopted in practical domains. This volume of Advances in Soft Computing contains accepted papers presented at CISIS’08, which was held in Genova, Italy, on October 23rd-24th, 2008. The selection process to set up the Workshop program yielded a collection of about 40 papers. This allowed the Scientific Committee to verify the vital and crucial nature of the topics involved in the event, and resulted in an acceptance rate of about 60% of the originally submitted manuscripts.

Review World City Network: A Global Urban Analysis / Routledge:In this era of advanced communication technologies, ideas, data, and knowledge can be communicated without regard to geographical distance. On any given day, a business deal in China led by a firm in Chicago may be organized through Hong Kong without any need to connect to New York. In World City Network, Peter Taylor views cities as global service centers that provide international financial and business services. In devising seamless global services for clients, these companies link firms together in a global city network. Through an analysis of the intra-company flows of 100 global business service firms Taylor measures the connections between cities and also their relative connectivity to the global economy.

Review Advanced Algorithms for Neural Networks: A C++ Sourcebook / John Wiley & Sons Inc (Computers):A valuable working resource for anyone who uses neural networks to solve real-world problems This practical guide contains a wide variety of state-of-the-art algorithms that are useful in the design and implementation of neural networks. All algorithms are presented on both an intuitive and a theoretical level, with complete source code provided on an accompanying disk. Several training algorithms for multiple-layer feedforward networks (MLFN) are featured. The probabilistic neural network is extended to allow separate sigmas for each variable, and even separate sigma vectors for each class. The generalized regression neural network is similarly extended, and a fast second-order training algorithm for all of these models is provided. The book also discusses the recently developed Gram-Charlier neural network and provides important information on its strengths and weaknesses. Readers are shown several proven methods for reducing the dimensionality of the input data. Advanced Algorithms for Neural Networks also covers: Advanced multiple-sigma PNN and GRNN training, including conjugate-gradient optimization based on cross validation The Levenberg-Marquardt training algorithm for multiple-layer feedforward networks Advanced stochastic optimization, including Cauchy simulated annealing and stochastic smoothing Data reduction and orthogonalization via principal components and discriminant functions Economical yet powerful validation techniques, including the jackknife, the bootstrap, and cross validation Includes a complete state-of-the-art PNN/GRNN program, with both source and executable code.
