Review Electronic Writing Centers: Computing In the Field of Composition (New Directions in Computers and Composition) / Ablex Publishing:This book describes the emerging practice of e-mail tutoring; one-to-one correspondence between college students and writing tutors conducted over electronic mail. It reviews the history of Composition Studies, paying special attention to those ways in which writing centers and computers and composition have been previously hailed within a narrative of functional literacy and quick-fix solutions. The author suggests a new methodology for tutoring, and a new mandate for the writing center: a strong connection between the rhythms of extended, asynchronous writing and dialogic literacy. The electronic writing center can become a site for informed resistance to functional literacy.

Review Southeast Asian Families and Pooled Labor : Multiple Wage-Earner Strategies for Refugee Households in the U.S. (Garland Studies in the History of American Labor) / Routledge:This book analyzes family work strategies among Southeast Asian refugees who entered the United States between 1989 and 1994. Increasing the number of multiple wage-earners in refugee households has been an important focal point of American policy for promoting refugee self-sufficiency. Research indicates the importance of adult children among refugee households, as either secondary earners or alternative wage-earners to the unemployed heads of the household. Their labor force participation and employment rates are higher than those of household heads. These findings are most striking for refugee households which contain unmarried adult children, indicating impressive economic contributions of extended families or non-nuclear family members. Findings also indicate that fewer children in the household, a larger portion of English-fluent household members, and initial placement outside California are all significantly related to the incidence of multiple wage-earners in Southeast Asian refugee households. The absence of children and the proportion of English-fluent household members are more significant in generating additional wage-earners than in producing one earner in the household.

Review Meeting Basic Learning Needs in the Informal Sector: Integrating Education and Training for Decent Work, Empowerment and Citizenship (Technical and Vocational ... Training: Issues, Concerns and Prospects) / Springer:"This anthology brings together basic facts and features about basic learning needs and skills of people working and living in the informal economy and presents case studies from different countries examining educational and training strategies for meeting these learning needs. It portrays the grave problems facing educational and training systems vis-á-vis informal sector workers, even as they look at holistic solutions that take into account principles of lifelong learning and innovations in informal, non-formal and formal adult learning, and show a growing awareness that education is a human right of fundamental significance to promoting decent work and humane living conditions. The size, diversity, and the strength and sheer tenacity of workers and owners in the informal sector as well as the stress on globalisation and technological changes have combined to bring about a reappraisal of the links between education and training and the informal labour market. The book looks at the interlinkages between EFA and work and takes the stance that promoting the right to basic education is crucial for overcoming oppression and indecent working conditions. Basic education in its current state is not imparting the necessary skills for entry to the labour market. In view of this gap, the case studies pose the crucial question of what essential skills and which basic learning needs have to be addressed for productive and decent work. Although this book mainly provides cases of learning programmes for the informal economy in countries in South Asia, Latin America and Egypt, the lessons learnt have much to offer to researchers, policy makers and practitioners working in other parts of the world".
