Review International Handbook on Globalisation, Education and Policy Research: Global Pedagogies and Policies / Springer:

The aim of this Handbook is to present a global overview of developments in education and policy change during the last decade. It has the objective of providing both a strategic education policy statement on recent shifts in education and policy research globally and offers new approaches to further exploration, development and improvement of education and policy making. The Handbook attempts to address some of the above issues and problems confronting educators and policy makers globally. Different articles seek to conceptualize the on-going problems of education policy formulation and implementation, and provide a useful synthesis of the education policy research conducted in different countries, and practical implications. The Handbook, by focusing on such issues as - the OECD (2001) model of the knowledge society, and associated strategic challenge and 'deliverable goals' (OECD 2001:139)- UNESCO-driven lifelong learning paradigm, and its relevance to education policy makers, globally - different models of policy planning, and equity questions that are raised by centralization/decentralization, diversity/uniformity and curriculum standardization issues - the 'crises' of educational quality, the debate of standards and excellence, and good and effective teaching. - will contribute to a better and more holistic understanding of the education policy and research nexus; offering possible strategies for the effective and pragmatic policy planning and implementation at the local, regional and national levels.

List Price: $180.00

Review The History of the Yorkshire Miners, 1881-1918 / Routledge:

This detailed social history is concerned with the workers in the Yorkshire coal industry, their union, and the broader mining communities in which they lived from the formation of the Yorkshire Miners Association in 1881 through to the end of the First World War. The period covered is of considerable importance for the consolidation of the Yorkshire Miners Union, and indeed for the building of a national miners' federation and an international miners' organization, in both of which its role of Yorkshire's leadership was central. The decades straddling the turn of the century were characterized by considerable volatility in the mining industry, which was reflected in a number of strikes. This was also the period during which the eight-hour day was established, the issue of the minimum wage was fought out, and the miners turned toward affiliation with the Labour Party. Towards the end of the period, the union made its contribution to the war effort. Carolyn Baylies traces these general processes and focuses in detail upon a number of episodes during which union struggles and community involvement coalesced. She explores the dynamic between district and local levels of the union, and the tensions that accompanied a progressive rationalizion of bargaining machinery. While primarily tracing the fortunes and stance of the union, she also situates these in broader accounts of the development of mining communities and of the labour movement. Review Working in the Service Sector (Routledge Studies in Business Organization and Networks) / Routledge:

The rise to prominence of the service sector - heralded over half a century ago as the great hope for the twenty-first century - has come to fruition. People working in the service sector are now outnumbering those involved with manufacturing in many cases. This growth poses many serious questions: Is more growth in the service sector possible without an expanding manufacturing sector? How great is the need for low-skill, low-paid jobs in the provision of services to households? These and many other questions are answered in an unassuming readable style in this new collection that will be of great interest to all those involved in industrial economics.
