Review Geometric Modelling: Theoretical and Computational Basis towards Advanced CAD Applications (IFIP International Federation for Information Processing) / Springer:Geometric modelling has been an important and interesting subject for many years from the purely mathematical and computer science viewpoint, and also from the standpoint of engineering and various other applications, such as CAD/CAM, entertainment, animation, and multimedia. This book focuses on the interaction between the theoretical foundation of geometric modelling and practical applications in CAD and related areas. Geometric Modelling: Theoretical and Computational Basis towards Advanced CAD Applications starts with two position papers, discussing basic computational theory and practical system solutions. The well-organized seven review papers give a systematic overview of the current situation and deep insight for future research and development directions towards the reality of shape representation and processing. They discuss various aspects of important issues, such as geometric computation for space search and shape generation, parametric modelling, feature modelling, user interface for geometric modelling, geometric modelling for the Next Generation CAD, and geometric/shape standard. Other papers discuss features and new research directions in geometric modelling, solid modeling, free-form surface modeling, intersection calculation, mesh modeling and reverse engineering. They cover a wide range of geometric modelling issues to show the problem scope and the technological importance. Researchers interested in the current status of geometric modelling research and developments will find this volume to be an essential reference.

Review A Computer-Aided Design and Synthesis Environment for Analog (The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science) / Springer:A Computer-Aided Design and Synthesis Environment for Analog Integrated Circuits addresses the design methodologies and CAD tools that are available for the systematic design and design automation of analog integrated circuits. Two complementary approaches are discussed. In the first part the AMGIE analog synthesis system is described. AMGIE is the first analog synthesis system that automates the full design process from specifications down to verified layout. It is targeted to the design of moderate-complexity circuits. It relies on design and circuit knowledge stored in the tool's libraries and can be used by both novice and experienced analog designers as well as system-level designers. The inner workings are explained in detail, with (practical) examples to demonstrate how the implemented algorithms and techniques work. Experimental results obtained with the AMGIE system are reported, including actual fabricated and measured circuits. The second approach, i. e. [+]
the systematic design of high-performance analog circuits, is discussed in the second part of the book. This approach is supported by tools to boost the productivity of the designer. An example of such a tool is Mondriaan, that is targeted towards the automatic layout generation of highly regular analog blocks. The proposed systematic design methodology is then applied to the design of high-accuracy current-steering digital to analog converters (DACs). The full design path is discussed in detail. By using the Mondriaan tool and other in-house developed and commercially available tools, the first 14-bit accurate current-steering DAC without tuning or trimming in CMOS technology has been fabricated and measured. Both complementary approaches increase analog design productivity. Design times of the different design experiments undertaken are reported throughout the book to demonstrate this.

Review A Mathematical Theory of Design: Foundations, Algorithms and Applications (Applied Optimization) / Springer:This book is extremely important to the field because it presents a unified framework for theory and practice, which is proven theoretically and by many cases from various engineering fields. Specifically, there are four major aspects that make the book unique: 1) The book develops a formal systems approach to design (including theorems, analysis of principles of design and information theory). 2) Methods for efficient design are rigorously derived from the theory, based on AI and optimization. 3) The scope of the book covers many engineering disciplines under a unified framework, including mechanical, electrical, civil, industrial, manufacturing systems, and apparel industry. Thus, it applies to readers from various disciplines, theoreticians and practitioners. DFM and DFA are also covered. 4) The book provides the methodology for developing the next generation computer software for advanced intelligent CAD (Computer Aided Design). Audience: The book is especially appropriate for courses in engineering (mechanical, industrial, electrical, and civil). It is also a useful reference for practicing engineers interested in design and optimization, and for applied mathematicians and computer software developers engaged in smart CAD applications.

Review Design of Metallic Cold-Formed Thin-Walled Members / Taylor & Francis:This book approaches cold-forming techniques and the specific problems of cold-formed thin-walled members. It discusses the problems that may be covered in the evaluation of the strength of cross-sections and the buckling resistance of members, and highlights the theoreticla basis and the design approach necessary to overcome them. Of particular benefit is a Windows-based program accompanying the book that allows the reader to easily evaluate the strength of a cross-section and the buckling resistance of a member for both steel and aluminum.

Review Battery Management Systems: Design by Modelling (Philips Research Book Series) / Springer:Battery Management Systems - Design by Modelling describes the design of Battery Management Systems (BMS) with the aid of simulation methods. The basic tasks of BMS are to ensure optimum use of the energy stored in the battery (pack) that powers a portable device and to prevent damage inflicted on the battery (pack). This becomes increasingly important due to the larger power consumption associated with added features to portable devices on the one hand and the demand for longer run times on the other hand. In addition to explaining the general principles of BMS tasks such as charging algorithms and State-of-Charge (SoC) indication methods, the book also covers real-life examples of BMS functionality of practical portable devices such as shavers and cellular phones. Simulations offer the advantage over measurements that less time is needed to gain knowledge of a battery's behaviour in interaction with other parts in a portable device under a wide variety of conditions. This knowledge can be used to improve the design of a BMS, even before a prototype of the portable device has been built. The battery is the central part of a BMS and good simulation models that can be used to improve the BMS design were previously unavailable. Therefore, a large part of the book is devoted to the construction of simulation models for rechargeable batteries. With the aid of several illustrations it is shown that design improvements can indeed be realized with the presented battery models. Examples include an improved charging algorithm that was elaborated in simulations and verified in practice and a new SoC indication system that was developed showing promising results. [+]
The contents of Battery Management Systems - Design by Modelling is based on years of research performed at the Philips Research Laboratories. The combination of basic and detailed descriptions of battery behaviour both in chemical and electrical terms makes this book truly multidisciplinary. It can therefore be read both by people with an (electro)chemical and an electrical engineering background.

Review From Knowledge Intensive CAD to Knowledge Intensive Engineering / Springer:IFIP Working Group 5. 2 has organized a series of workshops extending the concept of intelligent CAD to the concept of "knowledge intensive engineering". The concept advocates that intensive life-cycle knowledge regarding products and design processes must be incorporated in the center of the CAD architecture. It focuses on the systematization and sharing of knowledge across the life-cycle stages and organizational boundaries. From Knowledge Intensive CAD to Knowledge Intensive Engineering comprises the Proceedings of the Fourth Workshop on Knowledge Intensive CAD, which was sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) and held in Parma, Italy in May 2000. This workshop looked at the evolution of knowledge intensive design for the product life cycle moving towards knowledge intensive engineering. The 18 selected papers present an overview of the state-of-the-art in knowledge intensive engineering, discussing theoretical aspects and also practical systems and experiences gained in this area. An invited speaker paper is also included, discussing the role of knowledge in product and process innovation and technology for processing semantic knowledge. Main issues discussed in the book are: + Architectures for knowledge intensive CAD; + Tools for knowledge intensive CAD; + Methodologies for knowledge intensive CAD; + Implementation of knowledge intensive CAD; + Applications of knowledge intensive CAD; + Evolution of knowledge intensive design for the life-cycle; + Formal methods. The volume is essential reading for researchers, graduate and postgraduate students, systems developers of advanced computer-aided design and manufacturing systems, and engineers involved in industrial applications.
