Review Developing Global Executives / Harvard Business School Press:In our borderless global economy, companies must ship their executives nearly as far and wide as their products. Whether these far-flung executives soar or land with a thud may make all the difference between a successful international enterprise or a world-class failure - and it is this crucial difference that "Developing Global Executives" defines. Based on a wide-ranging study of veteran global executives, leadership development experts Morgan W. McCall, Jr. and George P. Hollenbeck reveal what it takes for organizations to groom, and individuals to become, successful international executives. The answer sounds deceptively simple: People learn to "be global" from doing global work. But therein lies a tricky distinction - What specific types of career experiences are the ones that prepare global leaders for their roles? To what extent can individuals seek out-and companies help orchestrate-these experiences? In "Developing Global Executives", leading global executives help answer these questions. Through their candid, rich, and varied stories, readers learn who global executives are, what distinguishes them from domestic leaders, and which experiences have been most critical to mastering their extremely demanding careers. In addition, these "lessons from the field" underscore the key requirements and challenges of effective leadership in a global environment: from the importance of continuous learning and the crucial role of mentors to the difficulties in overcoming "culture shock" and the warning signs of potential derailment. [+]
Practical and far-sighted, this book offers a wealth of firsthand insights for aspiring and current international executives and the organizations that employ them. Morgan W. McCall, Jr. , a Professor of Management and Organization at the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California, is the author of "High Flyers: Developing the Next Generation of Leaders". He was previously the Director of Research at the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, North Carolina. George P. Hollenbeck is an organizational psychologist based in the Houston, Texas area. He formerly served as an HR executive with worldwide responsibility at Merrill Lynch and at Fidelity Investments, and as Senior Director, Executive Education at the Harvard Business School.

Review Time-Driven Activity-Based Costing: A Simpler and More Powerful Path to Higher Profits / Harvard Business School Press:In the classroom, activity-based costing (ABC) looks like a great way to manage a company's limited resources. But executives who have tried to implement ABC in their organizations on any significant scale have often abandoned the attempt in the face of rising costs and employee irritation. "Time-Driven Activity-Based Costing" is the solution to the problems associated with large-scale ABC implementation. In this book, Kaplan and Anderson offer a revised model where managers can estimate the resource demands imposed by each transaction, product, or customer, rather than rely on time-consuming and costly employee surveys. In their new model, Kaplan and Anderson focus on the two parameters managers need to estimate: how much it costs per time unit to supply resources to the business activities (the total overhead expenditure of a department divided by the total number of minutes of employee time available) and how much time it takes to carry out one unit of each kind of activity (as estimated or observed by the manager). Rather than endlessly updating and maintaining ABC data, this book with allow managers to spend their time addressing the deficiencies the model reveals: inefficient processes, unprofitable products and customers, and excess capacity. Kaplan and Anderson lead the discussion of Time-Driven ABC in the first seven chapters, followed by individual cases studies of actual implementations by Acorn consultants in diverse settings.

Review Through the Labyrinth: The Truth About How Women Become Leaders (Center for Public Leadership) / Harvard Business School Press:Despite real progress, women remain rare enough in elite positions of power that their presence still evokes a sense of wonder. In "Through the Labyrinth", Alice Eagly and Linda Carli examine why women's paths to power remain difficult to traverse. First, Eagly and Carli prove that the glass ceiling is no longer a useful metaphor and offer seven reasons why. They propose the labyrinth as a better image and explain how to navigate through it. This important and practical book addresses such critical questions as: How far have women actually come as leaders? Do stereotypes and prejudices still limit women's opportunities? Do people resist women's leadership more than men's? And, do organisations create obstacles to women who would be leaders? This book's rich analysis is founded on scientific research from psychology, economics, sociology, political science, and management. The authors ground their conclusions in that research and invoke a wealth of engaging anecdotes and personal accounts to illustrate the practical principles that emerge. With excellent leadership in short supply, no group, organisation, or nation can afford to restrict women's access to leadership roles. This book evaluates whether such restrictions are present and, when they are, what we can do to eliminate them.

Review Ceo Pay And What to Do About It: Restoring Integrity to Both Executive Compensation And Capital-market Relations / Harvard Business School Press:This book proposes a whole new system for incenting managers to act in the best interests of company owners. Reversing his earlier position - that companies probably weren't paying enough to attract the best executive talent - Jensen and his coauthors are now positing that, in fact, pay packages can be too high and too risk-free, causing otherwise highly talented managers to act in ways that destroy corporate value. The authors have identified the critical missing link in current incentive plans, namely that link between a manager's effectiveness in executing strategy and the capital market's valuation of the results, which they call strategic value accountability. They explain how it works and how to devise a plan that holds top managers accountable for creating long-term strategic value.

Review The Dynamics of Taking Charge (Managerial Transitions) / Harvard Business School Press:Through studies of actual cases of manager succession, Gabarro isolates those factors that cause managers to succeed or fail in new positions, including prior experiences and support from superiors, and the steps involved in mastering the situation. The Dynamics of Taking Charge examines the managerial transitions of seventeen executives and managers, some successful and some not,and analyzes the factors that contribute to successful transitions. He identifies the five stages that a manager experiences when transitioning into new responsibilities and the impact of the managers style, experiences, and situational factors on the individuals success. Gabarro concludes that while other factors are important, it is the quality of the managers interpersonal relationships with superiors, peers, and subordinates that predictably contributes to a successful managerial transition.
