Review Children, Language, and Literacy: Diverse Learners in Diverse Times (Language & Literacy Series) (Language and Literacy Series) / Teachers College Press:''Contemporary early childhood educators find themselves in contexts that are fundamentally inimical to the time-honored wisdom in our field. Children, Language, and Literacy speaks to all of us with a commitment to the very young and strengthens our collective resolve to work in increasingly more effective ways with children, families, and the next generation of teachers. '' - Mary Renck Jalongo, Editor, Early Childhood Education Journal ''Genishi and Dyson animate sociocultural theories of language learning by inviting us into the intimacy of children's worlds. This book will become a treasure on the required reading lists for early childhood, ESOL, and language arts courses. '' - JoBeth Allen, University of Georgia, Athens ''If our standards-based economy requires us to make all children the same, to drain the joy out of learning, and to move lockstep through a set curriculum, we have forgotten what early childhood classrooms are all about. Genishi and Dyson remind us. '' - Beth Graue, Interim Director, Wisconsin Center for Education Research ''Celia Genishi and Anne Haas Dyson call on us to rethink children's language and literacy instruction in the changing and diverse landscape of U. S. education. That call must be answered, and they help us immensely understand how to do so. [+]
'' - Eugene Garcia, Vice President, Education Partnerships, Arizona State University In their new collaboration, Celia Genishi and Anne Haas Dyson celebrate the genius of young children who are learning language and literacy in our diverse times. Despite burgeoning sociocultural diversity, many early childhood classrooms (pre-K to grade 2) offer a one-size-fits-all curriculum in which learning is too often assessed by standardized tests. In contrast, Genishi and Dyson proclaim diversity as the new norm. They feature stories of children whose language learning is impossible to standardize and teachers who do not follow scripts. These master teachers observe, informally assess, respond to, and grow with their students - some of whom are rapid language learners and some of whom become speakers, readers, and writers at ''child speed. '' Much of this learning, regardless of tempo, is found within the language-rich contexts of play. Chapters focus on children's ways of communicating through varied modes, including the use of nonverbal expression; languages such as Spanish, English, and the variant of English known as African American Language; and multiple media. Throughout the text there is a resistance to labels such as ''at risk'' and a much-needed advocacy for child-sensible practices in a world where diversity is indeed the ''new norm. ''.

Review Strengthening Collegiate Education in Community Colleges (Jossey-Bass Higher and Adult Education Series) / Proquest Info & Learning:"The community college has done serious damage to itself by becoming a site of compromised educational opportunity, a shadow of what it might be. Community colleges continue to offer access, but access to an anexperience that is intellectually 'less that' the rest of higher education. This book seeks to repair the damage and to sustain a vision of the community college as a serious academic institution. " -from the preface Eaton details the key factors that have cause community colleges to shift from crucial sites of higher education opportunity to ambiguous centers of quasi-educational programs and services. Review The Politics of Women's Studies: Testimony from the Founding Mothers (Women's Studies Quarterly) / The Feminist Press at CUNY:In the patriarchal halls of 1970s academe, women who spoke their minds risked their careers. Yet intrepid women-students, faculty, administrators, members of the community-persisted in collaborating to form women's studies. In doing so, they created a movement that altered curricula and teaching styles, and shifted paradigms and content across disciplines. Now, in an unprecedented volume that captures both the history of a pivotal era and the drama of personal risks, triumphs, and losses, 30 scholars and activists document their work to establish women's studies programs. These original essays by "founding mothers" feature a diversity of voices: young graduate students or new Ph. D. s just beginning to teach and untenured; tenured professors in search of ways to improve their students' capacities to learn; older, veteran academics at last witnessing change; and even a few administrators. During the early years, they taught at more than 30 campuses, many changing jobs several times. Some taught at private institutions such as Spelman College and Cornell University, while the majority taught at large state universities such as Berkeley, Michigan, Kentucky, Arizona, and the City University of New York. In all of these programs, founders grappled not only with issues of gender, but with those of class, race, and sexuality, in a decade infused with political unrest and questioning, when civil rights and antiwar activism, as well as feminism, shaped academic worlds. [+]
In engaging political memoir, these essays chronicle the exhilaration of building a new kind of institution, of constructing a new curriculum and unearthing a new body of knowledge. They also give voice to the pain of successive defeats in the face of sexist attitudes and structures. Few of these trailblazers were welcomed as agents of change, fewer still applauded for their work. Yet their stories remain both inspiring and instructive. While each of these women's narratives has a life of its own, collectively, they tell an even more powerful story. The first volume in the Women's Studies History series, The Politics of Women's Studiespreserves an essential history that is in danger of sinking into obscurity and combating the amnesia afflicting many of those teaching and studying about women today. The Politics of Women's Studies includes essays by: Electa Arenal, Gloria Bowles, Marilyn J. Boxer, Mariam Chamberlain, Johnnetta Cole, Nona Glazer, Beverly Guy-Sheftall, Nancy Hoffman, Elizabeth Kennedy, Annette Kolodny, Nellie McKay, Yolanda Moses, Kathryn Kish Sklar, Barbara Smith, Sheila Tobias, and others.

Review College Choices: The Economics of Where to Go, When to Go, and How to Pay for It (National Bureau of Economic Research Conference Report) / University Of Chicago Press:Aspiring college students and their families have many options. A student can attend an in-state or an out-of-state school, a public or private college, a two-year community college program or a four-year university program. Students can attend full-time and have a bachelor of arts degree by the age of twenty-three or mix college and work, progressing toward a degree more slowly. To make matters more complicated, the array of financial aid available is more complex than ever. Students and their families must weigh federal grants, state merit scholarships, college tax credits, and college savings accounts, just to name a few. In College Choices, Caroline Hoxby and a distinguished group of economists show how students and their families really make college decisions—how they respond to financial aid options, how peer relationships figure in the decision-making process, and even whether they need mentoring to get through the admissions process. Students of all sorts are considered—from poor students, who may struggle with applications and whether to continue on to college, to high aptitude students who are offered "free rides" at elite schools. College Choices utilizes the best methods and latest data to analyze the college decision-making process, while explaining how changes in aid and admissions practices inform those decisions as well.
