Review The Ethics of Drink and Other Social Questions or Joints in Our Social Armour / IndyPublish.com:

James Runciman (1852-1891) was an English teacher, author and journalist. He was born at Cresswell, a village near Morpeth in Northumberland. He was educated at Ellington school, and then for two years (1863-5) in the naval school at Greenwich, Kent, becoming afterwards a pupil-teacher at North Shields ragged school. While still a schoolmaster, he read for himself at night, and attempted journalism. He soon wrote regularly for the Teacher, the Schoolmaster, and Vanity Fair; of the last paper he became sub-editor in 1874. In January 1874, he matriculated at the University of London. About 1880, while continuing his school-work, he was sub-editor of London. Subsequently he confined himself solely to the profession of journalism. As a writer on social or ethical topics, he proved himself equally vigorous and versatile, but his best literary work described the life of the fishermen of the North Sea, with whom he spent many of his vacations. His most famous works include: The Romance of the Coast (1883), The Chequers (1888) and A Dream of the North Sea (1889).

Review The Ethics of Organizational Transformation: Mergers, Takeovers, and Corporate Restructuring (National Conference on Business Ethics//Proceedings) / Quorum Books:

In the wake of major insider trading scandals on Wall Street and serious debates over the benefits of corporate mergers and takeovers, ethics in business has become a topic of paramount importance-both in the corporate world itself and in the business school community. This volume presents a discussion by a distinguished group of corporate executives and academic specialists of the ethical issues involved in mergers, acquisitions, and takeovers. The result of a major conference sponsored by the Center for Business Ethics at Bentley College, the book seeks to relate ethical and philosophical considerations to the pragmatic concerns of business operation. In their provocative exploration of the issues involved, the contributors address such subjects as employee interests, stakeholder welfare, managerial ethics, the problem of insider trading, and more. Divided into five major sections, the volume begins with several chapters that offer an overview of ethical and moral issues in organizational transformations. The second section presents corporate, labor, and government views of the issues involved and includes chapters by Edward L. Hennessy, Jr. of Allied-Signal; Daniel W. Sherrick of the UAW; and David T. Scheffman of the Federal Trade Commission among others. [+]
In the following chapters, the contributors address ethical aspects of the strategies and tactics used to effect mergers and takeovers, paying particular attention to their impact on management and employee interests. Section Four presents some alternative approaches to corporate restructuring, while the final section includes actual case studies of the relationship between ethical issues and practical bottomline business concerns. Must reading for corporate executives and financial experts involved in the business of mergers and takeovers, this book is also an ideal supplemental text for graduate courses in business ethics.

Review Moral Luck in Medical Ethics and Practical Politics (Avebury Series in Philosophy) / Avebury:

This book applies the well-established and productive concept of moral luck, originated by Bernard Williams and Thomas Nagel, to the field of medical ethics and practical politics. The paradox of moral luck arises because typically we maintain two incompatible attitudes towards right action and good character. Applying an analysis based on moral luck, and employing such concepts as uncertainty and risk, this book produces policy suggestions rooted in a systematic philosophical analysis. The concepts of chance and risk have a great deal to tell us about how we should allocate scarce health care resources; deal with matters of informed consent; treat secrecy and confidentiality; and decide what strategic policies are appropriate in a situation of uncertainty.

Review Skills of Workplace Communication: A Handbook for T&D Specialists and Their Organizations / Quorum Books:

Ability and skill are important, but they are not everything. Equally important is how you communicate yourself-your competencies and achievements-to others. Teacher and consultant Richard Picardi takes a long, thoughtful look at the things we all need to understand in order to allow our ideas to be heard and understood in today's noisy, hotly competitive organizations. He covers not just the skills of putting your ideas, recommendations, and analyses in writing, but also the other way in which effective communication is accomplished: nonverbally. He shows you the internal and external roadblocks to effective communication and how to break through them. In Part I, Picardi analyzes the nature of verbal and nonverbal communication. He shows how to recognize and remove internal and external barriers to effective communication and create messages that get the results you want. He then focuses on the specific goals of business communication, showing how the concept of change interacts with all forms of communication-in fact, how change is implicit in them. Picardi lays out the elements of organization that are essential in creating reader-based messages, then explains how to compose the clear, forceful sentences and paragraphs to express them. Later, in Part III, he presents his system of "text boxes," showing how to write typical business memos and letters, using direct and indirect patterns of writing to demonstrate different types of messages you want to communicate, and ends with a systematic method to revise and improve upon first drafts. [+]
He goes on to apply the principles of reader-based communication, effective organization, and clear expression to proposal and report writing. He shows how proposals differ from reports and how to write both effectively. For training and development specialists, the book provides the material you need to teach these skills to others.
