Review Worldwide Model-Driven Development and Business Rules Management Systems 2004-2008 Forecast Update and 2003 Vendor Shares: Year-End Review / IDC Research:

This IDC study is a revised version of Worldwide Model-Driven Development and Business Rules Management Systems 2004–2008 Forecast and 2003 Vendor Shares (IDC #32392, December 2004). The original document was revised due to changes that IDC is making with regard to how several leading business rules management systems (BRMS) vendors map to our software taxonomy and how IDC allocates revenue from these vendors to the IDC BRMS functional market. These revisions in no way suggest any changes to the actual financial statements of these companies. This IDC study provides vendor-specific revenue data, market shares, competitive analysis, and profiles of the leading model-driven development (MDD) vendors and BRMS vendors for the period from 2002 to 2003. This document provides an updated five-year forecast as of December 2004 for the MDD and BRMS submarkets for the 2004–2008 period. Forecasts by geographic region and operating environment are included. By leveraging a bottom-up approach based in market segmentation, IDC's forecast for this market has dramatically increased and is indicative that significant change in this market is occurring. "All of the indications are present to suggest that the overall analysis, modeling, and design (AMD) market and its constituent parts are positioned for high growth," said Stephen D. Hendrick, group vice president, Application Development and Deployment Research. "High growth in the BRMS submarket indicates end-user validation of BRMS, as does the commitment now being made by the leading vendors to this technology. [+]
At the same time, new approaches to modeling combined with a more complete and integrated support of the software development life cycle will drive higher-than-anticipated growth in the model-driven development submarket. ".

Review U.S. Prepaid Phone Card 2005-2009 Forecast and Analysis: Risks and Opportunities Post-Acquisition of AT&T and MCI / IDC Research:

This IDC study analyzes the U. S. prepaid phone card market by sizing the complete prepaid revenue opportunity today and growth potential in the next five years. Using primary IDC research and secondary market data, this study provides key industry metrics detailing prepaid card penetration, usage, consumer demand characteristics, service provider market share, and growth trends. This study also analyzes competitive strategies of leading prepaid phone card providers. "After a decade of rapid market expansion, future growth in the U. S. prepaid phone card market can no longer be sustained by selling ever more cheap prepaid phone cards. SBC's and Verizon's respective acquisitions of AT&T and MCI during the first quarter of 2005 will further shake up competition in the prepaid phone card market. To survive, service providers must learn how to extend existing consumer relationships to gain a bigger share of the consumer prepaid budget. [+]

Review The 2004 IDC Professional Developer Model / IDC Research:

This IDC study discusses the IDC Professional Developer Model, which presents a methodology for estimating the number of professional developers worldwide and in over 190 countries and the results of the model for 2001–2008. Vendors can use this study to help make decisions about where to focus marketing efforts for products used by developers. "In our 2004 iteration of the IDC Professional Developer Model, we see continuing indication that professional-developer hiring is a leading indicator of software spending growth," said Dennis Byron, IDC Application Deployment Software research analyst. "It is much like the way in which "tool and die" economic activity indicated up and downs in manufacturing in the United States historically. The model also shows how the IT world is getting smaller and that offshoring is a worldwide phenomenon. ".

Review Western European Home Computing: What Will Drive The Next Wave of Consumer Spending? / IDC Research:

The Western European consumer personal computing market has undoubtedly enjoyed a healthy uplift over the past 12 months. Regionalized economic factors and consumer market conditions have combined with an overall rebound in the PC market and rapidly declining average street prices to drive a consumer PC sales resurgence. The consumer PC market currently accounts for close to 40% of PC shipments in Western Europe, so its importance cannot be underestimated. Growth has been driven by booming notebook sales to home users as consumer electronics convergence fuels high levels of interest in the market surrounding new and exciting consumer technologies. Currently accounting for 36% of PC shipments, notebook sales will account for 53% by 2008. However, the desktop will remain at the heart of home digital entertainment. The retail channel has played an extremely important role in driving down prices, fuelling competition between the A-brands and white-box vendors. The development of Media Center oriented machines and the transformation of the desktop PC into a set-top box provide important considerations for future growth. "As the lines between home computing, mobility, consumer electronics and digital entertainment become blurred, vendors must seek to make their consumer computing messages as simple and coherent as possible, while at the same time ensuring that they are offering an attractive and price-competitive proposition to the end user," said Ian Gibbs, a senior research analyst with IDC's European Personal Computing Team.
