Review European End-User Survey: 2005 Spending Priorities, Outsourcing, Open Source, and Impact of Compliance / IDC Research:IDC's 2005 Western European Software End-User Survey was carried out in March 2005 and covered 625 companies across Western Europe. The survey dealt with a number of general software issues, such as importance of software to end users, software-spending priorities for 2005, spending impact of regulatory compliance, business process outsourcing, and adoption of open source software. Furthermore, the survey covers questions specific to different software areas that will be analyzed in upcoming studies. "This survey yielded many interesting, and surprising, results," said Program Manager Bo Lykkegaard from IDC's European Software Group. "We knew from previous surveys that end users consider software important to business success. That was more than confirmed, since more than half of the respondents consider software as "very important" to business success. Furthermore, CRM applications and financial management applications have moved to the top of the current spending priorities, surpassing both network management software and security solutions. Also, regulatory compliance issues are quite visible in Europe. This survey clearly displayed the heterogeneous nature as well as the mixed impact of regulations and standards on organizations in Western Europe. And finally, open source has a higher adoption in certain software markets than previously thought. [+]
One-third of the respondents reported significant live use of open source databases; that was surprisingly high. ".

Review Western European ERP Applications Forecast, 2005-2009 / IDC Research:In this study, IDC provides ERP applications market forecast data for Western Europe. Specifically, this study presents a new version of the Western European forecast by functional segment, company size, and country. The forecast is based on actual annual data for 2004 and projects the market out to 2009. Results from 2004 show that ERP applications revenue in Western Europe increased 12% from $6. 41 billion in 2003 to $7. 15 billion in 2004. However, when measured in euros, the market grew by a meager 1. 4%. "IDC expects that rapidly consolidating Western European ERP market will see moderate growth overall over the next five years," said Bo Lykkegaard, Program Manager, European Enterprise Applications. "This growth is caused by pockets high demand, such as legacy replacement in new industries such as government, banking, insurance, transport, healthcare, education, and business services, high value extensions of core ERP functionality, and midmarket demand for software-driven process automation. [+]
Furthermore, the emergence of third-party composite applications will create renewed demand for the underlying ERP applications. ".

The forecast is provided for Western Europe broken down by major country groupings of DACH (Germany, Austria and Switzerland), Nordic (Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden), Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxemburg), British Isles (U. Andsbjerg continues: "The survey shows the highest recognition of importance in financial analytics. This trend is detectable across all company sizes in all countries and all vertical industries. ".

Review West Europe Incumbent Operator Voice Strategies, 2004 / IDC Research:This document examines the voice market strategies for incumbents in 16 European countries. It analyzes what steps incumbents are taking to defend their market shares in traditional voice services, how successful those steps have been so far, and how incumbents perceive voice over IP (VoIP) services now that competitive operators have launched services in most European countries over the past year. "With the overall European PSTN/ISDN voice market now in permanent decline, and the large percentage of total revenues that those services represent for incumbents, the steps that incumbents take over the next several years in managing their PSTN/ISDN voice services will be critical to their survival," said Jill Finger Gibson, research director, European Fixed-voice Services.

Review Personal and Mobile Computing Survey - Business User Spending Intentions, 2005 / IDC Research:2004 was a positive year for the Western European commercial PC market. While the previous year had seen some encouraging signs in terms of the replacement of aging client computing infrastructure, these were by enlarge essential renewals renewals of necessity. 2004 built upon this optimism and saw budgets being freed up, corporate refreshes shifting up a gear, and continued buoyancy from the small and medium business markets. However, what is of key concern to the market is what will happen during the course of 2005: will business growth be maintained and what will be the key drivers of this growth? The results of IDC's business user survey confirm that the market is expected to be characterized by the following trends over the coming 12 months: More desktop PCs and more notebook PCs will be purchased per business in 2005 than in 2004. "A greater number of new notebook purchases will replace desktops in 2005 than in 2004. Reliability, battery life and hard-disk size are the three most important factors taken into consideration when a notebook purchasing decision is made," said Ian Gibbs, senior research analyst with IDC's European Personal Computing Team. Improving data security remains the most important investment priority in 2005, although replacing aging systems and upgrades to Windows XP are rated as second and third most important respectively. Cost constraints and a lack of understanding of new technologies remain the biggest inhibitors to new investment proposals, however. Survey respondents did reveal an uplift in interest in Linux as a Microsoft alternative. Demand for wireless capabilities is also on the rise, while businesses will in fact demand greater technological innovation from vendors. [+]
Overall business IT spending should increase in 2005, with over half of this year's respondents expecting to spend more in 2005 than they did in 2004. The results of IDC's personal and mobile computing business survey, 2005 (undertaken between December 2004 and January 2005), which are detailed and analyzed in this study, provide vendors, end users, and channel players with an important insight into what IT managers are seeking in terms of IT investment and how IT vendors should address their needs. Their concerns, intentions, and perceptions of client computing are highlighted, as are their attitudes to technologies both new and old.
