Review Vertical Markets' Enterprise Resource Planning Solution Adoption by Application Area / IDC Research:This IDC study addresses enterprise resource planning (ERP) software applications adoption across vertical markets in North America. This document is based on results from IDC's Enterprise Technology Trends Survey (ETT Survey) conducted in August and September of 2004. IDC's Enterprise Technology Trends research program provides analysis across 18 vertical markets and other market segments to uncover trends and associated opportunities (or caveats). The respondents who participated in this study are directly involved in IT decision making for their companies in North America. "Our end-user survey findings suggest strong growth in the HR application market in 2005, where the highest penetration rates across industries are found in the healthcare services, transportation, and education industries. This application area is expected to gain momentum most significantly in the professional services, communications, and resources segments in 2005, where an important proportion of companies are planning to implement human resources software applications within the next 12 months or are evaluating the applications. Review Asia/Pacific (Excluding Japan) Technology and Support Services Market 2005-2009 Forecast and Analysis / IDC Research:This IDC study describes the IT support services market across the Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) or APEJ region. As companies continue to face financial and competitive pressure, they are increasingly turning to IT as a key differentiator that will be able to both control cost and increase competitive differentiation. The main area of focus for many corporations during this phase is the corporate IT infrastructure. Despite the constant pressure IT infrastructure is facing in the marketplace, it should be noted that an increasing number of companies are realizing the fact that a robust and cutting-edge IT infrastructure can be the key to a successful business. "As IT infrastructure gains importance in the corporate landscape, companies are increasingly willing to engage an external party to manage the complex (but critical) IT infrastructure. The vendors that are better positioned to gain from this fast moving trend are the IT services companies that have the ability to provide Infrastructure support across multiple technologies," says Venu Reddy, research manager, IDC Asia/Pacific.

Review Worldwide Router 2005-2009 Forecast / IDC Research:This IDC study forecasts the worldwide router market for 2005–2009, showing growth in revenue and shipments and changes in average price for the total router market and by sectors. A forecast for worldwide sales of wireless routers is included. The document also breaks out worldwide router revenue by major geographic regions. "We now see a significant upturn in the worldwide router market, with the potential for steady growth in service provider routers and to a lesser extent enterprise routers throughout the forecast period. The revival in the enterprise space is largely propelled by the potential for new router models based on value-added modules, which we think will displace installed routers at many companies. Review Worldwide Mobile Phone 2005-2009 Forecast and Analysis / IDC Research:This IDC study presents our updated forecast for mobile phone shipments, including converged mobile devices and camera phones. Presenting updated splits by air interface, replacement rate, platform, technology, and region, this study provides actual 2004 data and the impact of this demand on IDC's forecast for mobile phone shipments through 2009. "Strong demand from emerging markets, the attraction of color displays and camera-enabled mobile phones, and delays in 3G network availability made 2004 a banner year for 2. 5G mobile phone shipments. Surpassing 692 million units shipped in 2004, the underlying demand foundation of the mobile phone market is sound, but limited catalysts for 3G adoption will create complex market conditions over the next few years. The market will continue to expand through 2009, however, offering a significant opportunity for hardware, software, and service vendors alike. " — Alex Slawsby, senior analyst, Mobile Devices.

Review U.S. Healthcare Provider IT Spending 2004-2009 Forecast / IDC Research:This study presents IDC's latest 20042009 forecast for IT spending by healthcare providers in the United States. In addition to overall healthcare provider IT spending, IDC forecasts the market by IT segment (hardware, software, and IT services) and by subindustry (hospitals, offices and clinics, and other healthcare delivery services). "The overall IT market growth forecast is cause for celebration, but there are divergent views to appeal to, and vendors cannot reach the middle of this play and the suddenly realize that many healthcare providers have always been reluctant to view themselves as 'businesses,'" said Scott Tiazkun, senior research manager, U. S. Healthcare ITO. "Vendors still need to approach healthcare providers with a delicate balance of IT wizardry and hat-in-hand humility. ".

Review Canadian Government Sector 2006-2010 Preliminary IT Spending Forecast / IDC Research:"Total government spending for hardware, software and IT services will grow from C$5. 4B in 2006 to C$6. 3B in 2010. IT suppliers wanting to capture a share of that growth must: take advantage of opportunities to provide infrastructure hardware and software, especially at the provincial and municipal government levels; sell software and integration services to support government transformation; and, nurture outsourcing opportunities, starting with the Western provinces. Review Canadian Application Management Forecast and Analysis, 2005-2009 / IDC Research:The application outsourcing services market continues to be one of the best stories in the IT services market, posting stronger than expected growth in 2004, the result of several exceptional deals concluded in Canada. "The application outsourcing services market benefits from the continued interest in IT outsourcing and business process outsourcing services and the externalization of IT applications and processes. In addition, application services are emerging as key offerings in their own right. Vendors should consider giving application services as much emphasis as other outsourcing offerings" says Jim Westcott, senior analyst, application and business process outsourcing services research.

Review Increased Demand for Color Output Expected to Drive Demand for Workgroup Color Hardcopy Devices in the Office / IDC Research:IDC recently increased its printer and MFP color page forecasts substantially from our original forecast, published in April, to our new updated forecast, published in October. The predicted 2008 unit shipments for printers increased from 618,460 to 858,000, while 2008 unit shipments for MFPs increased from 220,500 to 311,000. This increase is an indicator that the use of color hardcopy devices is on the rise — not just for color-specific environments, but within emerging opportunities for general office markets. Nevertheless, IDC is not projecting that color devices will overtake their black-and-white–only counterparts anytime soon. However, overall color growth will be significantly higher than what will be experienced in the black-and-white market. This survey study helps to identify some of the key market indicators that should facilitate IDC's expected market projections for color, including: The percentage of color page volume is expected to increase over the next three years. The current copy and print black-to-color mix is running at about 80–90% in black and about 10–20% in color. In three years, this mix is projected to increase slightly for color, to approximately 15–25% of all page volume. Much of a company's color output is produced onsite. On average, 80% of respondents' color volume is produced onsite. [+]
When a color job is outsourced, it is usually for one of the following reasons: fast turnaround is needed, better document finishing is needed, the job's length is long (an average of 3,822 pages). The transition from black-and-white–only devices to color-capable machines will be gradual. Operating costs are the most important aspect of consideration in this transition. If a black-and-white page costs $0. 01, respondents anticipate the color page to cost only three $0. 03 (median). In addition, the acceptable hardware cost premium between the two devices is only 15–20%. Lastly, respondents indicated that the time frame to completely transition from black-and-white–only devices to color-capable machines is nearly six years. However, 24% of respondents said that the transition to color-capable machines will never happen. The highest-rated product features for workgroup color hardcopy devices are reliability, output quality, network connectivity, hardware/operating costs, and ease of use. A surprising majority of respondents said that their workgroup color hardcopy devices do not have to be monitored and controlled for access and usage. This finding may have been affected by the overwhelming percentage of small businesses that said that the device does not need to be monitored and controlled. The highest-rated paper handling features for workgroup color hardcopy devices are supporting paper sizes larger than 8. 5 x 11in. , duplexed output, and having standard paper capacity over 500 sheets. The majority of respondents said the next workgroup color hardcopy device purchased/acquired would produce mostly black-and-white pages, with occasional color output. Specifically, this mix is about 70:30 in favor of black-and-white pages. The expected monthly volume is approximately 5,000 pages (median). The overwhelming next workgroup color hardcopy device of interest for purchase/acquisition is an MFP. By respondent percentage, interest in MFPs is nearly double that in printers and almost six times higher than interest in copiers. In addition, the MFP configuration of greatest interest is a full copy/fax/print/scan configuration. Respondents expect the new machine to replace existing devices. Most of these respondents said the new machine would most likely replace current black-and-white–only laser products. While the Windows operating system obviously must be supported on workgroup color hardcopy devices, certain markets show a high need for Mac OS and Linux support. Adobe Postscript attracts high interest. Clone Postscript has gained much smaller interest. PCL is wanted by slightly more than half of all respondents. Workgroup color hardcopy devices must be priced aggressively. The average expected price for this product is just over $8,600, but the median price is only $2,500. Channel preferences are similar for the hardware and maintenance needs. However, the channel preferences for purchasing supplies are more varied and wider than the hardware and maintenance preferences. "IDC projects significant growth for the workgroup color hardcopy market as it transitions from a niche to a mainstream market for general office applications. While IDC does not believe that color device shipments will overtake black-and-white–only device shipments within the forecast period, we anticipate that color offers the hottest market potential for hardware growth in the hardcopy market," said Keith Kmetz, program director for IDC's Hardcopy Peripheral Solutions and Services programs.

Review Worldwide and U.S. HR Management Services 2005-2009 Forecast / IDC Research:This IDC study examines the competitive landscape and provides a five-year forecast for the worldwide and U. S. HR services market. In 2004, the economy showed further signs of recovery, although the growth in HR services in the United States did not grow as dramatically in 2004 as it did in 2003. This is largely due to the fact that 2002 was a very slow year for HR services in the United States because of the events of 9/11 and the resulting market rebound in 2003. "The worldwide market for HR services showed moderate growth in 2004, although the market has seen some consolidation," said Lisa Rowan, program manager for HR Management and Staffing Services at IDC. "HR service providers have an opportunity to grow their businesses through the pursuit of several strategies, including expanding their offerings to encompass workforce optimization capabilities, delivering meaningful HR metrics, and simplifying their pricing models.
