Review Continuous Data Protection: A First Look at End-User Awareness and Behavior / IDC Research:

This IDC study discusses the results of the continuous data protection (CDP)–related part of a data protection survey conducted in June 2005. CDP is a new approach to data protection that promises to shorten data recovery times while providing continuous or near-continuous protection against data loss. To reveal the awareness level of CDP among users, IDC included relevant questions as part of a broader data protection survey conducted in June 2005. The questions addressed, among other things, the interest in specific CDP products on the market today and future plans. According to Rhoda Phillips, research manager, IDC Storage Software, "The use of CDP products is taking place not on an exclusive basis, but rather as an additional method to other data protection methods, such as replication, snapshots, and mirroring. " "There is a high level of uncertainty among end users regarding which products to use for CDP," adds Natalya Yezhkova, senior research analyst, IDC Storage Systems. "This uncertainty represents an opportunity for vendors who plan to enter the CDP market. ".

Review Worldwide PC Market: 2Q05 Review / IDC Research:

This IDC study reviews the performance of the worldwide PC market during the second quarter of 2005 (2Q05). The study looks at the market performance of desktop and portable PCs as well as x86 servers in major geographies, including the United States, Western Europe, Japan, Asia/Pacific excluding Japan (APeJ), and the rest of the world (ROW). Details on unit shipments, market value, and average selling prices (ASPs) are provided, along with a review of the competitive performance of the top PC vendors. "The worldwide PC market saw a remarkable surge in growth during the second quarter of 2005, reflecting both underlying demand as well as a dynamic competitive landscape. An abundance of promotions offering low-cost systems helped boost overall volume, particularly in the consumer segment. However, it will be difficult to sustain these growth rates in the foreseeable future particularly because there is a risk of rising cost due to some component shortages and rising oil prices. Inventory management and competitive pricing along with changes in growth by region present both challenges and opportunities to PC vendors. " — David Daoud, analyst, United States Quarterly PC Tracker and Personal Computing Program.

Which countries spend the most on IS outsourcing services? Additionally, which countries will experience the strongest CAGRs through 2009? Which verticals have the greatest opportunities for service providers "Each year brings an additional layer of complexity for services providers and enterprises alike in determining their strategy for outsourcing their IT Infrastructure. Whilst the market is growing at 11%, this growth is clearly not uniform and is being influenced by a range of factors such as offshore outsourcing, selective outsourcing and even the impacts of Business Process Outsourcing," observes Phil Hassey, Associate Director, Asia/Pacific Services, IDC Asia/Pacific.

The application outsourcing services market continues to be one of the best stories in the IT services market, posting stronger than expected growth in 2004, the result of several exceptional deals concluded in Canada. "The application outsourcing services market benefits from the continued interest in IT outsourcing and business process outsourcing services and the externalization of IT applications and processes. In addition, application services are emerging as key offerings in their own right. Vendors should consider giving application services as much emphasis as other outsourcing offerings" says Jim Westcott, senior analyst, application and business process outsourcing services research.

Review U.S. Consumer Network-Embedded Audio Device2005-2009 Forecast and Analysis / IDC Research:

This IDC study presents IDC's forecast of the market for network-embedded home audio devices in the United States and our view of the development of the forces accelerating and inhibiting this market. With the proliferation of broadband services, home networking, digital audio devices, and digital audio online services, IDC believes the technological elements for mass adoption of networked audio devices and applications are now in place. However, several other variables need to come together to bring networked audio devices and services to the mass market. "Consumers are slowly but surely coming around to multimedia networking, and as devices, interfaces, and applications become more reliable and less complex, more user friendly and less obtrusive, and more TV-like and less PC-like, we will see more and more consumers listening to their digital music not just through their PCs or their portable audio players but through their stereos over their home networks," said Jonathan Gaw, research manager for IDC's Consumer Markets: Home Networking program.

What are key buyer and supplier trends that are impacting software on-demand adoption today, and what forces will shape tomorrow and the next five years? What are the not-to-be-missed opportunities? "The past couple of years have certainly been interesting in the IT industry with the notoriety and attention given to the software on-demand delivery model. It is the type of disruptive innovation that has reenergized the single-digit growth software industry and provided a new method for obtaining the type of software that departments of large organizations, as well as small and medium-sized businesses, previously may not have been able to purchase due to cost or lack of IT resources," said Erin Traudt, research analyst for IDC's Software as a Service program.
