Review Japan VoIP Services 2005-2009 Forecast / IDC Research:This IDC study provides an overview of the VoIP market in Japan, with a focus on the corporate market, which is where IDC believes long-term opportunity is to be found. Results from the 2005 Japan WAN Managers Survey are included to provide insight into VoIP adoption trends in the enterprise. The VoIP market is becoming crowded with players and this document profiles some of the leading service providers. "VoIP is steadily gaining traction in both the consumer and corporate sectors. In 2004, consumer VoIP services posted strong growth, whereas gains in the corporate sector were more muted," says Daniel Newman, market analyst, Telecommunications Services, IDC Japan. "The debut of dry copper services is slowing down the spread of VoIP but the high adoption rate for fiber to the home (FTTH) means that the future for VoIP services is bright. ".

Review Japan Wide Area Ethernet Services 2004-2009 Forecast / IDC Research:This IDC study covers the wide area Ethernet services market in Japan. The market posted another year of strong growth in 2004 as wide area Ethernet services moved into the mainstream as a backbone WAN technology. This study assesses the overall market opportunity and analyzes the competitive pressures being faced by many carriers offering wide area Ethernet services. "Wide area Ethernet services have gained acceptance as a core WAN technology, thanks to technological improvements that have boosted their reliability. Demand is concentrated in major metropolitan regions so local carriers are playing an important role in developing this fast-growing market. The presence of local carriers is spurring fierce competition with the traditional nationwide carriers so prices will remain low and adoption rates high over the next few years," says Daniel Newman, market analyst, Japan Telecommunications Services Research, IDC Japan.

Review Small Enterprise Broadband Usage and Preferences in Asia/Pacific (Excluding Japan), 2004 / IDC Research:This IDC study examines the extent of the Internet broadband service usage by the small enterprises across the Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) or APEJ region. IDC surveyed enterprises in 11 Asia/Pacific countries across 16 vertical markets to assess their usage and future needs of broadband access and related applications and services. The issues covered include what sort of Internet access is being used by the enterprises and how satisfied they are with the quality of the service and pricing. The survey also assesses the extent of current usage of IP value-added services (VAS), wireless LAN (WLAN) deployment, and the reasons for not subscribing to broadband. The countries covered are Australia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, the People's Republic of China (PRC), Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand. The survey reveals that DSL remains the dominant Internet access service across the region. Moreover, within the range of DSL technologies, asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) is the commonly deployed option. A review of applications across the various broadband networks clearly reveals that pure Internet access is the dominant application. Going forward, key applications should include voice transport, video/multimedia streaming, and distance education. "In the small enterprise space, broadband access continues to gain ground, with many small enterprises already utilizing services such as DSL as their Internet access medium," says Tim Crowley, research manager, Broadband Markets and Technologies, IDC Asia/Pacific. [+]
"Interest in broadband access shows relatively stronger demand going forward than more traditional access means, such as narrowband. Further, the survey indicates that small enterprises are beginning to show more interest in applications such as voice transport and video/multimedia streaming. ".

IDC Japan's personal computing and digital imaging research manager, Kumi Suzuki, says, "Companies with a higher implementation rate of portable PCs are more eager to implement more portable PCs. Vendors focused on portable PC can increase their business opportunities by focusing on such companies with a high implementation rate of portable PCs. ".

Review Japan Collaborative Applications 2004-2008 Forecast and Analysis / IDC Research:This IDC study shows that the collaborative application market in Japan reached 33. 1 billion Yen in 2003. IDC forecasts that the market's average compound annual growth rate (CAGR) between 2003 and 2008 will be 2% and that the market will reach 36. 6 billion Yen in 2008. IDC Japan's Software research manager, Kazuyuki Ide, says, "The use of collaborative applications is indispensable in the daily activities of companies and consumers. Collaborative applications, therefore, will have to establish a system to increase the creativity and productivity of communities and to achieve front-end integration of Web-based applications rather than just be means of simple messaging and information sharing. Review Small Enterprise IP Usage and Preferences in Asia/Pacific, 2004 / IDC Research:This IDC study examines the extent of Internet Protocol (IP) service adoption by small enterprises across the Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) region. IDC surveyed enterprises in 11 Asia/Pacific countries across 16 vertical markets to assess their usage and future needs of IP technologies and services. Issues covered include: What sort of Internet access do SMBs use and how satisfied they are with the quality of the service and pricing? What is the extent of current deployment of both IP virtual private networks (IP VPNs) and IP telephony among enterprises in the region? What plans do SMBs around the region have for such deployments over the next 1224 months? "Although services like IP VPNs and VoIP are becoming more popular throughout the region, SMBs remain relatively cautious when it comes to implementing them. Clearly, vendors and service providers still have work to do before IP VPNs and VoIP can be said to be the predominant choice for communications and telephony amongst SMBs in the region," said Claus Mortensen, senior analyst Telecommunications, IDC Asia/Pacific.

Review Japan WAN Managers Survey, 2005 / IDC Research:This IDC study contains results from the 2005 Japan WAN Managers Survey, a poll of information systems managers at companies with at least 100 employees. Major areas covered in this study include leased line, wide area Ethernet services, IP VPN remote access, and voice and data in the WAN. There are cross-tabulations by vertical market, domestic WAN size, number of employees, and company location. This is the fourth year that IDC Japan has conducted the survey, and comparisons with the prior results are made when appropriate. "The key finding in this year's survey is that some of the newer WAN technologies are moving out of the high growth period and beginning to mature in the market," observes Daniel Newman, market analyst, Japan Communications, IDC Japan. "Internet VPN and IP VPN penetration rates have climbed to roughly 70% and wide area Ethernet is close to 40%. Meanwhile, the sharp drop in users of traditional frame relay and leased lines means that carriers have to start cultivating new sources of demand. ".
