Review The IBM Application Deployment Software Lineup in Government: A Good Mix of Software and/or Service Centric, Custom, ISV, or In-House Developed / IDC Research:This IDC study looks at how IBM's government sector groups help government organizations integrate their "business" processes end to end in the same way as IBM supports business process automation (BPA) in for-profit organizations and enterprises. In North America in particular, IBM works with government CIOs to develop new approaches for sharing information from legacy systems and leveraging existing IT assets. IBM's strategy is to use the same On Demand concept it uses in all other industries and variations of IBM's commercially available application development and deployment software. This study provides a blueprint for other subscription research users in terms of what works and why when it comes to "going vertical with your product lineup. " "This study dives down into IBM's approach to industry centricity and provides other suppliers a blueprint for how to go vertical or keep going vertical," says Dennis Byron, VP, Business Process Automation and Deployment Software research. "It never hurts to compare what IBM is doing with theory, especially when it comes to industry marketing. ".

"Longer sales cycles as customers take on a wait-and-see approach in developing vendor community consolidation should open up opportunities for local vendors," she further adds.

Review Australia Infrastructure Management Software 2005-2009 Forecast / IDC Research:"Despite the variety of markets in the infrastructure management marketplace from security and storage to network management, each of the software vendors in this space have the charter to assist customers in reducing operational costs and increasing efficiency in IT systems and applications. Management software solutions are helping organisations balance efficiency, reduce complexity, at the same time as assist in the successful deployment of new technologies, all whilst achieving greater business value. The large solution vendors are likely to be the biggest winners in response to the trends in this market with best-of-breed players poised as challengers or 'the alternative' to a big vendor solution. We should also expect to see continued merger and acquisition activity and significant investments in research and development so that vendors can deliver more integrated solutions for customers," says Megan Dahlgren, senior analyst, Software, IDC Australia.

Review Japan Systems Infrastructure Management Software 2004-2008 Forecast and Analysis / IDC Research:This IDC study analyzes the storage and systems/network management software markets in Japan in 2003 by platform, market segment, and vendor as well as studies their overall markets. The systems/network management software market in Japan in 2003 marked a year-on-year growth of 2. 4% to reach 158. 2 billion Yen while the storage software market grew by 11. 6% to reach 46. 3 billion Yen. IDC Japan's Software Research market analyst, Kumi Tanaka, says, "The market interest is shifting from simple resource management, including network management, server management, and application management to the optimization of entire IT systems and IT service management. " She adds, "The sales will still be mainly supported by resource management modules such as network management and job scheduling modules but the implementation of service availability management and change/configuration management software will increase as users deepen their understanding of IT service management and as IT infrastructure libraries (ITILS) become widespread. The importance of IT strategies of businesses will, therefore, increase and there will be a trend of IT investments initiated by the top management of companies. ".

Review Japan Systems Integration 2004 Vendor Profiles: Top Vendor Ranking / IDC Research:This IDC study provides a ranking of the top 15 vendors in the Japan systems integration (SI) market together with profiles of each of the vendors. The ranking was based on the vendors' consolidated sales to customers outside their respective company groups. Following the recovery of corporate performance and capital investments, the project-oriented market (SI and consulting) is expected to show stable growth after 2003. However, there are many factors that suppress the market's growth such as scaling down of projects, longer periods of time needed to make decisions on whether to make investments or not, and continued escalation of market competition. IDC Japan's senior IT services market analyst, Masami Kashiwagi, says, "The time has come for vendors to come up with measures to increase their negotiating power by improving their ability to provide highly strategic proposals and by making service values visible, instead of easily giving in to requests for discounts. Vendors have to urgently eliminate nonprofitable projects and implement concrete measures to increase their levels of project management and systems establishment abilities. ".

Review Japan VoIP 2004-2008 Forecast and 2003 Brand Shares / IDC Research:This IDC study highlights that VoIP technology is now in a period of change. VoIP technology is a potentially profitable market not only for VoIP vendors but also for data vendors, software vendors, and communication carriers. This study presents the results of research on the size and vendor market share of Japan's enterprise VoIP device market in 2003, with a forecast until 2008, as well as the Enterprise User Survey. The size of Japan's enterprise VoIP device market in 2003 was 66. 719 billion Yen. The company that topped the market was NEC, with a market share of 29. 5%. In second place was Oki Electric, with a market share of 29. 3%, lagging behind NEC by a mere 0. 2%. [+]
IDC forecasts that based on an average annual growth of 12. 7% from 2003 to 2008, Japan's enterprise VoIP device market in 2008 will amount to 121. 399 billion Yen. In terms of products, IP Phone's CAGR was the highest, at 32. 2%. Junko Yairi, network device research manager of IDC Japan, comments on Japan's enterprise VoIP device market, "The main objective of enterprises using VoIP networks is for cost reduction. In the future, rather than focus on reducing communication cost, enterprises should look at VoIP network implementation as a means of reducing lost opportunities for revenue gain. Also, diverse approaches to VoIP technology are surfacing, such as application interaction or mobile centrex, and others. Communication carriers as well as vendors of software, VoIP devices, mobile phones, wireless LAN, and other devices that are quick to establish a framework for collaborative effort will emerge winners. Review Japan Outsourcing Leading Vendor Profiles, 2004 / IDC Research:This IDC study summarizes the results of a survey on the 2004 Japan outsourcing market and competition scene. The discussion on the competition scene presents profiles as well as market rankings of the Japan IT outsourcing vendors based on consolidated revenue. Riding the tide of companies' cost-reduction needs, the IT outsourcing market continues to show high growth. However, the growth has slowed down compared to the 1990s when outsourcing services were sprouting up rapidly. As the outsourcing business garners more attention, competition among vendors has also become more intense. "In the March 2004 period, leading vendors achieved high growth in domestic IT outsourcing revenue. However, if the IT outsourcing services continue to be provided as solutions for cost reduction, vendors will be hard-pressed for profits. It is important for vendors, therefore, to provide speedy systems construction and other services that would improve the value of user companies' businesses," opines Satoshi Matsumoto, senior market analyst, IT Services Research, IDC Japan.

Review Asia/Pacific (Excluding Japan) Public WLAN Services and Hotspots 2004-2008 Forecast and Analysis / IDC Research:This IDC study presents IDC's forecast for the public WLAN hotspot access market in Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) or APEJ covering the period 20032008. The analysis provides forecasts on the total number of available locations, users and revenue with qualitative analysis for 10 country markets Australia, Hong Kong, India, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, the People's Republic of China (PRC), Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand. "The public WLAN hotspot service market in APEJ showed strong growth in 2003, but saw a slow down in build out during 2004. This was partially due to uncertainty in the PRC market regarding the WAPI standard, which ultimately did not proceed," says Tim Crowley, research manager, IP Services. "Overall, service providers active in this space are monitoring usage patterns of current end users in an effort to gauge the revenue and business models that will best make PWLAN hotspots a long-term success.
