Review Japan Carriers Internet Datacenter 2005-2009 Forecast / IDC Research:This IDC study is based on the findings of direct interviews with leading communication carriers in Japan on the current situation of Internet datacenter (iDC) provided by communication carriers, its characteristics and future directions. The study analyzes the market by service category and forecasts the size of the iDC market between 2004 and 2009. At the same time, the study analyzes the position and share of communication carriers in comparison with the situation of the entire iDC market that includes IT vendors and systems integration (SI) vendors. "iDC provided by Japanese communication carriers got on a recovery track in 2003 and continues to grow in 2004 as well as in 2005. The operating rate of collocation sites is increasing and carriers' revenue is also growing. This suggests that user companies highly evaluate solid and flexible facilities of carriers, Internet eXchange (IX) and network connectivity, and carriers' high technical level. In addition, interest in disaster measures and risk distribution is increasing as indicated by keywords such as disaster recovery (DR) and business continuity (BC), and IDC believes that datacenter is expected to further grow as integrated service of outsourcing features. On the other hand, carriers' iDC face several problems in competition with IT vendors and SI vendors. There are many challenges to be solved for carriers to expand their iDC amid severe competition with other providers and to obtain solid trust from user companies," observes Toshihiro Mishima, research manager, Japan Communication Group, IDC Japan.

Review Japan PC Consumer Analysis, 2005: PC Usage Survey for Kids / IDC Research:This IDC study summarizes the results of a survey on the use of PC by kids at home. The target respondents were kids in upper primary or secondary schools who used PCs as well as their parents. The survey was conducted over the period from December 2004 to January 2005. Some 1,039 and 331 people responded to the primary and secondary surveys, respectively. Based on the answers provided, we conducted analyses on kids' PC usage at home, rules on PC usage imposed on them, PC activities, and the influence of parents' PC usage on theirs. IDC Japan's Personal Computing and Digital Imaging research analyst, Kaori Yamaguchi says, "The age at which kids start using PCs is becoming lower. Kids who use PCs in the house may contribute to increased PC usage within households. They may also help increase replacement needs and the number of PCs in each household.

Review Japan IA-64 Server and x86-64 Server 2004-2008 Forecast and Analysis / IDC Research:This IDC study analyzes the impact of the x86-64 server's debut on the IA-64 server market, and explores the respective server's market opportunities and growth factors. Additionally, forecasts for the server product markets are also presented. In August 2004, Intel began shipment of the Xeon EM64T processor, which was announced in February 2004. This 64-bit processorequipped x86-64 server started shipment in the Japan market in 3Q04. Thus, Intel's 64-bit processorequipped servers now include two systems: the EPIC processorequipped IA-64 server and the x86-64 server. According to IDC forecast, the x86 server market will see a rapid shift from the 32-bit processorequipped x86-32 server to the x86-64 server from 2005. By end of 2006, shipment of x86-32 servers will cease. In this way, the x86-64 server will succeed the x86-32 server. Meanwhile, the IA-64 server will achieve a certain market scale as the platform for migrating from the RISC server. "The advantages of the x86-64 server, which is equipped with the x86-64 processor, are larger address space and high-speed double-precision computation, rather than reliability or scalability, which are the advantages of the traditional x86-32 server. [+]Thus, it will have extremely limited impact on the IA-64 server market, which seeks to replace the RISC server market where high reliability and scalability are required," opines Masamichi Karasawa, senior analyst, Server, IDC Japan.
