Review Japan Carriers Internet Datacenter 2005-2009 Forecast / IDC Research:This IDC study is based on the findings of direct interviews with leading communication carriers in Japan on the current situation of Internet datacenter (iDC) provided by communication carriers, its characteristics and future directions. The study analyzes the market by service category and forecasts the size of the iDC market between 2004 and 2009. At the same time, the study analyzes the position and share of communication carriers in comparison with the situation of the entire iDC market that includes IT vendors and systems integration (SI) vendors. "iDC provided by Japanese communication carriers got on a recovery track in 2003 and continues to grow in 2004 as well as in 2005. The operating rate of collocation sites is increasing and carriers' revenue is also growing. This suggests that user companies highly evaluate solid and flexible facilities of carriers, Internet eXchange (IX) and network connectivity, and carriers' high technical level. In addition, interest in disaster measures and risk distribution is increasing as indicated by keywords such as disaster recovery (DR) and business continuity (BC), and IDC believes that datacenter is expected to further grow as integrated service of outsourcing features. On the other hand, carriers' iDC face several problems in competition with IT vendors and SI vendors. There are many challenges to be solved for carriers to expand their iDC amid severe competition with other providers and to obtain solid trust from user companies," observes Toshihiro Mishima, research manager, Japan Communication Group, IDC Japan.

Review Asia/Pacific (Excluding Japan) Carrier Capex 2004 Review and 2005-2009 Forecast and Analysis / IDC Research:This IDC study presents IDC's fixed line and mobile equipment capital expenditures (capex) forecasts for Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) or APEJ covering the years 20042009. Key features included forecasts for 11 APEJ markets, which are Australia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, the People's Republic of China (PRC), Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and 13 carriers, namely, BSNL, China Mobile, China Netcom, China Telecom, Chungwha, KT, PCCW, PLDT, SingTel, SKT, Telekom Malaysia, Telstra, and TRUE. "The APEJ region is a world leader in 2G and 3G mobile services, broadband generic digital subscriber line (xDSL) access, long-haul optical transport, long distance VoIP, and limited mobility services," state Bill Rojas, contributing analyst, IDC Asia/Pacific, and Sandra Ng, vice president, Communications, Peripherals, and Verticals Research, IDC Asia/Pacific. They further comment, "Over the next five years the region will start to witness fixed mobile convergence as integrated carriers seek to capitalize on 2G/3G mobile services and xDSL access along with new disruptive technologies such as wireless broadband. India and the PRC will continue to drive the bulk of fixed-line growth in the region but fixed wireless substitution has tremendous potential in a number of markets including Indonesia, the Philippines, the PRC, and India. Review Japan VoIP Services 2005-2009 Forecast / IDC Research:This IDC study provides an overview of the VoIP market in Japan, with a focus on the corporate market, which is where IDC believes long-term opportunity is to be found. Results from the 2005 Japan WAN Managers Survey are included to provide insight into VoIP adoption trends in the enterprise. The VoIP market is becoming crowded with players and this document profiles some of the leading service providers. "VoIP is steadily gaining traction in both the consumer and corporate sectors. In 2004, consumer VoIP services posted strong growth, whereas gains in the corporate sector were more muted," says Daniel Newman, market analyst, Telecommunications Services, IDC Japan. "The debut of dry copper services is slowing down the spread of VoIP but the high adoption rate for fiber to the home (FTTH) means that the future for VoIP services is bright. ".

Review Japan PC Consumer Analysis, 2005: PC Usage Survey for Kids / IDC Research:This IDC study summarizes the results of a survey on the use of PC by kids at home. The target respondents were kids in upper primary or secondary schools who used PCs as well as their parents. The survey was conducted over the period from December 2004 to January 2005. Some 1,039 and 331 people responded to the primary and secondary surveys, respectively. Based on the answers provided, we conducted analyses on kids' PC usage at home, rules on PC usage imposed on them, PC activities, and the influence of parents' PC usage on theirs. IDC Japan's Personal Computing and Digital Imaging research analyst, Kaori Yamaguchi says, "The age at which kids start using PCs is becoming lower. Kids who use PCs in the house may contribute to increased PC usage within households. They may also help increase replacement needs and the number of PCs in each household.

Review Japan IA-64 Server and x86-64 Server 2004-2008 Forecast and Analysis / IDC Research:This IDC study analyzes the impact of the x86-64 server's debut on the IA-64 server market, and explores the respective server's market opportunities and growth factors. Additionally, forecasts for the server product markets are also presented. In August 2004, Intel began shipment of the Xeon EM64T processor, which was announced in February 2004. This 64-bit processorequipped x86-64 server started shipment in the Japan market in 3Q04. Thus, Intel's 64-bit processorequipped servers now include two systems: the EPIC processorequipped IA-64 server and the x86-64 server. According to IDC forecast, the x86 server market will see a rapid shift from the 32-bit processorequipped x86-32 server to the x86-64 server from 2005. By end of 2006, shipment of x86-32 servers will cease. In this way, the x86-64 server will succeed the x86-32 server. Meanwhile, the IA-64 server will achieve a certain market scale as the platform for migrating from the RISC server. "The advantages of the x86-64 server, which is equipped with the x86-64 processor, are larger address space and high-speed double-precision computation, rather than reliability or scalability, which are the advantages of the traditional x86-32 server. [+]
Thus, it will have extremely limited impact on the IA-64 server market, which seeks to replace the RISC server market where high reliability and scalability are required," opines Masamichi Karasawa, senior analyst, Server, IDC Japan.

Review Enterprise Resource Management Investments in Asia/Pacific (Excluding Japan) / IDC Research:This IDC study covers the enterprise resource management (ERM) applications' current adoption status and several trends that have emerged from the deployment of ERM applications within the Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) or APEJ region. Furthermore, this study also provides some suggestions to help ERM solution vendors develop their future business strategies accordingly. "Even though the ERM adoption penetration rates are high in several subregions within APEJ, there still exist rooms for growth among laggards with low ERM technology adoption rates as well as within the small and medium-sized business (SMB) segment," says Kitcha Ing-Udomnoogoon, senior analyst, Software Research, IDC Thailand. "However, ERM vendors must go through thorough business planning, which includes effective product strategies, channel partnership management, and professional service resource allocation in major geographical regions," he further adds.

Review Asia/Pacific (Excluding Japan) Enterprise Resource Management Applications 2005-2009 Forecast and Analysis / IDC Research:This IDC study provides a market sizing and five-year forecast for the nine key countries in Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) or APEJ enterprise resource management (ERM) applications market. It also includes a five-year forecast for ten key ERM application functionalities: accounting, human resource management (HRM), payroll, inventory management, procurement and sales order processing, maintenance management, project management, contract management, business process management (BPM), and treasury management. This study also examines the major market trends, accelerators, and inhibitors that are emerging in the region. "As large enterprises move toward consolidating their IT investments, application integration technologies will become vital to ease the integration of disparate back-office systems," says Alan Tong, research manager, Asia/Pacific Enterprise Applications Research, IDC Malaysia. "For enterprise application (EA) vendors that do not own their integration technologies, they should consider partnering with best-of-breed enterprise application integration (EAI) vendors to add value to their solution offerings.
